Just seen this on the BBC news ticker.
Ireland flanker David Wallace has been ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining a knee injury in the match against England.

The Munster openside went down in agony with a badly twisted knee after being tackled by centre Alesana Tuilagi and was carried off for treatment.

Big loss for Ireland, really are struggling in the No. 7 department.

was fairly obvious at the time he was out

unfortunately I think we all knew at the time.

What was the worst part about it was that he knew. I think that's why he thumped the deck repeatedly.

Not the way I'd ever have thought we might see him go. I thought it might've been an ACL or medial ligament, if that's the case, you have to worry about his ability to ever come back.

Hopefully I'm wrong and we see him back in the game in 8/9 weeks or sooner, but I think I'm not alone in believing we might have lost another of the greats.

Strongly suspect he won't be in green again anyhow.

Dam...:( Horrible news, he's been such a great player for Ireland and of course Munster.

Would have loved to have seen him in the Green at this world cup.

Huge loss of a tremendous player.
I'd predict Jennings to be drafted into the squad and SOB to start at 7 with Ferris at 6

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

Probably. I don't think the thumping if the deck was 'damn I'm missing the world cup' it looked more like agony to me.

    It's a cruel sport.

Is a terrible loss. I feel so so sorry for David Wallace, it was going to be his last world cup too. I have to say I'm very upset now.

Will the man who built his reputation with the Leicester Tigers be able to fill his shoes I don't know. But I'm sure Jennings has been told to pack his bags for New Zealand tonight.

Yeah I thought the same. Looked in serious pain

Absolutely gutted. He's just back, playing well and his knee is done out. It looked pretty horrible in the footage anyway so here's hoping he recovers and can get back playing. He's been a real stalwart of the good aspects of Irish rugby over the years.

Absolutely gutted a tremendous guy and player, a huge loss. Has only played in one world cup, eddie disgracefully omitted him in 2003 even though he scored in each game he played in warm up games!! In 2007 he sprained his ankle and was in crutches for 3 weeks and only taken of him 4 days before the first game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

Terrible for him. Literally 10 seconds prior he had shown exactly wht he's still up to international level even at his age.

    Shane Jennings, pack your bags.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭sxt

A major loss , still at the very top of his immense game

I initially thought he was just badly winded when he got tackled a bit high by the Samoan centre :(

At this stage it wouldn't surprise me if Kidney has already been on to Niall Ronan...

Huge loss is right. You knew it was bad when D'Arcy went over to him just after he hit the ground and all Wallace did was put his hand up and hold D'Arcy by the head.

He knew then himself that was it.

Newstalk 106 have just said that Niall Ronan is being called up to replace Wallace. Kidney said the fact that he can cover 6 and 7 edged it for him over Jennings.

    You're joking surely.

Was it George Hook on Newstalk, or someone who knows something about rugby?

That's beyond a joke. Jennings is the only actual 7 we have.

This call up should be accompanied by a resignation letter from Kidney. He's doing his best to run the team into the ground.

Its terrible news. I'd put him up there with Ross, POC and BOD as being almost irreplaceable.

I really hope that I was wrong about Jennings and that he can make the step up to this level, even though I think that SOB will start at 7 now.

It was in jest regarding Kidney's obsession with players that can cover 6.

+ a million on Ruddock his gonna be a beast

Poor Wally though my heart went out to him

Horrible tackle from Tuilagi, it was a barely disguised shoulder charge. I'd look at citations for him.

Feel so sorry for Wally, international career could be over now

Tackle looked bad at first but in the replays it's actually fine. Huge hit, Wally was unlucky to have planted his leg at that exact moment. It's a disaster for us really.

Was it? I was at the match so didn't get to see replays but it looked like he just ploughed into him full speed

Yeah, my initial reaction was that it was a barge but he just hit him like a train.

Or an openside who pilfers ball, cuts lads down in tackles, is a traditional dog of war and is a pain in the arse to play against.

There's only one Johnny O Connor

Doubt Kidney knows he even exists. Outstanding last season, he deserved a place in the training squad, but our fetish for big ball carrying back rowers and Kidney's ignorance to all things Connacht means Concrete will stay in exile.

No way. Seriously? Niall Ronan over Jennings? What about the incredibly versatile* Mick O'Driscoll**?!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D He could play any position from 4-8, and could possibly cover the backs if required as he is so incredibly versatile. Deccie would want to careful or people will accuse him of favouring Munster players...........:D:D:D:D:D:D

    * this has become a catchphrase for a group of us who had to listen to some Munster fans describing their lock as "the incredibly versatile Mick O'Driscoll" repeatedly in a bar before the England 6N game this year arguing foir his inclusion for that game from the start at either 6,7 or 8. I only wish I was making that up!
** I await avalanche of replies telling me Mick O'Driscoll was Man of The Match versus the Toulon B Team in the Heineken Cup Pool Game (home) last year............

At the game and he went down in front of us. Really looked in pain. Horrible to see and terrible shame to see world cup ended like that. No replay shown of tackle so can't comment on it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,592 ✭✭✭GerM

Gutted for the bloke. Looked to be a bad injury and he could have done some serious damage. If that's the case, I think that was the last we'll ever see of him in a green jersey.

Our back row options are weakened significantly with his absence; there's a massive drop from our 4 match day players to the rest.

Its gonna be sob at 7, fez at 6 and heaslip at 8. Leamy on bench.

If/when fez injured then sob to six hopefully but you just know leamy will get in...

Brutal news. I knew he was gone when he thumped the ground and Darce knew it too.

I hope he wan't rushed back that's all I can say.

Disaster for Ireland in that we lose one of our best players and unfortunately will mean probably our best player playing out of position or rather the position he is least effective in.

I feel gutted for the guy as well. But it wasn't an illegal tackle - just a hard hit when Wallace had his leg planted. Very unlucky. Like DK said, '**** happens'.
