Good idea for a thread, I'm going to assume you are talking about Guinness by the way.

    Mod Note
After a week or so I will put up a poll for all the venues nominated so everyone can vote for their favourite pint, you can use your vote then to vote your displeasure of some venues or the quality of their product, I don't want to have this thread descend into a slagging match of people saying "Their pint is much, I went there and had an awful pint" or anything like that, lets keep it positive folks, and you never know we might arrange a meetup for the venue voted the best pint.

I don't drink Guinness either but the hubby says the pint in Mickey Kerin's is the business!

Brandons on the weekends, Lukies every other time.

It's a toss up between Paddy Quinns and Lucases. I'm going to go with the latter cos there's usually a comfortable spot to enjoy a cigarette with it.

I would vote for John O Dea's pub in Ennis for the best pint. A quiet bar really and not the best for going into on your own as it can be a bit cliquish (spelling?). But the Guinness is always spot on.

Lucas' I would also rate but usually very busy and actually the Poet's Corner has a grand pint too.

Kilshanny House in er.. Kilshanny do a lovely pint of Guinness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,494 ✭✭✭finbarrk

A bit pointless really. Everyone is going to say their local has the best pint. Lots of locals from Kilbaha to Mountshannon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,969 ✭✭✭buck65

    Name them.

John O'Deas has the best pint of Guinness in town, simple as. It's famous for it!

It is.They all talk about Ennis pubs, by the way.
And it's not about the best pint, it's about the best atmosphere, the best pub really.

I vote for Pepper's in Feakle!

Why? I'm not really a pint drinker, but if I do, the pint (of Guinness) has just the right temperature, not too cold, not too sloppy, in here.

But the feel is right: an old-fashioned pub with original sessions and a true country crowd - love them or hate them:D

The decor is lovely and country kitschy, and there is no sports-TV blaring. The landlord is an outspoken charmer who takes no ****e, the barmaids (especially the Polish ones) are a draw to the local bachelors (who will always be bachelors, no matter how hard they try - part of the charm here :D). And altogether it's a pub as Irish as it goes. You can actually have a conversation in here, that is, if you are interested in the lay of the land, the condition for cattle and the latest gossip :D

Anyhow, it's warm and welcoming, and that's how a best pint should be - don't you think?

Safe to say we can exclude all the Doolin pubs, pure bog water in all of them.

    +1 for Kilshanny House

    Lucas', without a doubt.
Great pint, the place is kept spotlessly clean, good old-fashioned service with manners.

    Thanks.
While I was living in Ennis (ages ago) my favourite was Micky Kerins, though.
It was such a good pub that I don't even remember the qualitiy of the pint...:o:D

I once compiled for a German high-gloss magazine the "best 15 pubs in Ireland". Peppers was absolutely one of them.
My Number One though is the Crown Bar in Belfast. Used to live there, remember the shamrocks or hearts painted into the perfect pint ... and by whom ... sweet memories....

    Lucas's gets my vote!

Did a bit of a pub crawl a few days ago to pubs I normally don't go to with a friend - Paddy Quinns, Brogans, The Diamond, Kerins - all good pints! Can't really complain about the state of pints in town

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,585 ✭✭✭✭Lady Chatterton

    I was talking to my dad today about where to get the best pint in Ennis and he recommended the following;

    Ciarans
    John O'Dea's
    Lucas'
    PJ Kelly's

I can recommend the pint in Goosers in Ballina/Killaloe

but technically Goosers is in Tipp :(.

not my local but nagles in kilfenora have the best guinness on the planet, i never met anyone yet who has not praised it .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 380 ✭✭littlesthobo

Haven't been in Nagles for years. Has a good rep. Irish Arms in Lisdoonvarna is the best tho, and if i had to pick a place in Ennis id say Paddy Quinn's

I hear o deas is closed. they were always great pints!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

I was sad to hear that as well. I didn't drink there often but it would have been nice to drop in one last time.

Saw builders clearing out Navins in Clarecastle the other day as well. Shame to see the locations with some character (remember that giant gun for shooting ducks or geese or whatever it was?) disappearing.

I hate the new Brogans. It looks like a theme pub and the lightings darker than an Abercrombie outlet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭willow tree

yeah crap news about o'deas but hope he enjoys his retirement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Just using this thread since I didn't want to create a new one for it, but the owners of Powers Pub in Clarecastle are retiring and selling.

Now I can't help but feel a lot of the decision is attributed to the dying trade rather than simply wanting to retire, and it will officially leave Clarecastle with just 1 pub! (O'Reillys - Formerly Navins)

I'm surprised they never started doing pub grub there - There definitely is an opening for something like that on the outskirts of Ennis.

Keanes Bar in Carrigaholt is the best pint I've ever had, anywhere. The keg is right below the tap under the counter so there'd hardly be a full pint in the line. Spend many an hour in there whenever I'm down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Been gone for couple of years now. I think the premises is still for sale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,751 ✭✭✭MyPeopleDrankTheSoup

as a lad said, once a pub starts doing food, it's not really a pub. doesn't bother me as change is inevitable and people have to do whatever they can to survive, but it's true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Ya look, I'd completely agree and I'm sure that was a decision that Powers and other pubs can't take lightly with their history as a 'Pub'. I'm sure there can be some middle-ground. Margins just too small now for Alcohol that it's completely unsustainable for 'quieter' pubs unless they are charging a fortune.

Good pints in Frawley's and the 19th in Lahinch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Did I say in my original post that it was closing?

‘The owners of Powers Pub are retiring and selling’

Stop being a moron about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

    Here's what you said.

"and it will officially leave Clarecastle with just 1 pub! (O'Reillys - Formerly Navins)"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Yes - As of right now, they are retiring and selling. There's nothing to say the 'pub' or a new pub will continue is there?

If there's a Butcher/Jeweller/Baker/Shopkeeper where the owner is retiring and selling the premises, is it not assumed it's just closing down? Anything different is a pleasant surprise.

What's with people disagreeing with that so vehemently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,494 ✭✭✭finbarrk

But you said it will leave the village with just one pub? Am I missing somethiong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

Plenty of demand for a second bar in Clarecastle IMO. You are pretty much implying it's closing down which is misleading

From what I saw of it on daft, it's being sold as a going concern.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,006 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Jaysis, I didn't say there isn't demand for a 2nd bar in Clarecastle, but I stated a fact that they are retiring and PERHAPS it's no coincidence that Clarecastle is down to 2 pubs (soon to be 1 unless one comes in Powers' place). It always feels like they do well on a Saturday night but that's about it. They don't do food. 1 good night a week can't be sustainable.

I literally said in my original post by the way that a bar that does food may fare better than a flat-out pub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

I don't get this notion that people who like selling drink should also be expected to start selling food.

Imagine telling a butcher he should start selling flowers.

Plenty of drinking bars do well, once they have sufficient catchment population.

If the owners are retiring they probably hadn't much drive in the last few years.
