    Hi,
I will be moving to Rathmines in a few weeks and want to know peoples recommendations on a gym. Just looking to get generally fit but would also like to build muscle.
    Thanks

Best gym in that area would be Raw on Richmond Street.

Yep, Raw is an amazing gym. Great staff and equipment and if i had the cash id definately join!

Cheaper options might be the Swan Leisure, with gym and pool. 150 for 3 months I think, or there's a new one, Flyfit opening in Ranelagh in Sept so depends on your budget.

    Good luck!

RAW is definitely the best gym in that area.

If you are happy with their membership rates, I would highly recommend you train there. Very inspiring place; cool staff too.

    Ok thanks for the responses.

Raw certainly looks good from the website, can I ask does anybody have any experience with the classes they offer, and do any of them focus on getting more built and toned as opposed to just plain cardio?

And also, would it be reasonable to train using mainly the classes as this is my first time to train where I am not focused on cardio, and I wouldn't have a clue about how to start making a program or even how to use any of the weights or weight machines?

    Thanks!

    Claases included in membership are
    - Bootcamp, spinning, circuit training, bums/tums, cardio kickboxing and pump and tone.

If you're not sure about programming or how to use the machines and free weights that can all be provided for you :)

Swan Leisure would be the cheaper and better option if your talking about classes i bring the kids down swimming and used the gym a few times, full class timetable which spin, circuits, pump, boxercise and laods of other toning classes!! has a pay as you rate aswell so no need to sign up. all classes, programmes and 25m pool included in membership if you are thinking of signing up. worth a look

Good stuff. Any idea how much for a student? And is this programming and instruction included?

Swan does seem like the better option but everyone is recommending raw so it must be good.....anyone go to the classes in SWAN? Is it mostly women or is there a good mix, wouldnt want to be the only lad. (the reason I ask is because it seems more the health centre type setup from the website at least, doesnt seem to focas on the gym aspect)

    Thanks

I've noticed Raw is getting really busy lately, and there is a long wait on alot of stuff. They gave greatly reduced memberships to other gyms that closed down, and the influx of extra members is really apparent.

Also as alot of Raw is free weights you would want knowledge of how to use them, or get instruction to get you started.

    Hi,
I did the odd class there months ago just for a bit of variety but havnt been in a while (recovering from injury) but one instructor, Siobhan, was amazing and did/does a class sat mornings. As with all gyms I guess it depends on the trainer. They have a decent variety.
Yeah, there's lots of us girls but plenty of guys too. I'm mostly in the weights area so there's not too many other girls. On weights days I'll got as early as possible, maybe 7-8am so the weights are less packed. On cardio days I'll go anytime as there's usually enough to go round!

It's good value for my needs at the moment. Try out the €6 pay as you go and see what you think, then head to raw and check it out. You'll see the difference but as I mentioned before, it prob boils down to a finance thing. If you're flush, Raw is perfect. if your a little strapped or want the pool, go for swan!

    Doolee :)

Avoid Swan leisure at all cost. Classes are overcrowded, pool is overcrowded, staff is ignorant, your complaints are ignored, no proper changing rooms,no proper shower or hairdryers in the main area ( you R welcome to use a freezer- like changing room on the second floor- miles away from the swimming pool. Avoid, avoid, avoid
