ROCKFORD, Iowa (Indiana’s NewsCenter) As Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson lay in a coffin, draped by an American flag, in front of a tearful audience mourning his death in Afghanistan. An old friend appeared, his loyal dog, who still refuses to leave his side.
Tumilson’s Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson’s casket at the funeral service in Tumilson’s hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS.
The photo was snapped by Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, and later posted on her Facebook page in memory of the San Diego resident. Tumilson, 35, was one of 30 American troops, including 22 Navy SEALs, who were killed when a Taliban insurgent shot down a Chinook helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade on August 6th.
“I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn't make it or couldn't see what I could from the aisle,” Pembleton wrote on her Facebook page. “To say that he was an amazing man doesn't do him justice. The loss of Jon to his family, military family and friends is immeasurable.’’

I think there is something seriously wrong with someone who doesn't like dogs.

Gotta say, it'd be a bit of a deal breaker if a fella told me he hated dogs and especially if he said he never wanted one.

The love you get from a dog is like nothing you get from any other creature- they just LOVE you SO much & even if you've been really horrible to someone or if you've done something really stupid, the minute your dog sees you it think you're the coolest person ever. It's an instant pick-me-up.

Dogs are pretty great. My fellah always jumps up when I'm about to come home (Whether I'm at the train station, or walking home is irrelevant, he apparently seems to know that I'm coming back regardless) and runs out to meet me at the end of the road.

Maybe the dog lay down with a sigh because Indiana can be uncomfortably warm and humid in Summer, and the family of the deceased man took him from the air conditioned home he was used to, to a graveyard. Do you guys actually believe this dog understands a funeral ceremony?

Also, it never ceases to amaze me how many people appear to find there to be something so horribly tragic to die in fighting for an idea as silly as patriotism, or find honour in a flag. They deserve a Darwin award more than strangers' tears.

I'm a cat person myself, but there's no mistaking the love between a lot of people and their dogs. It's lovely to see people so close to animals like this. Amazing to think that dogs are reviled in some cultures, and yet they are considered practically family in others.

A hungry animal will eat what it can.. whether the pet is Cat, Dog or lizard.

Agreed. People think that cats have absolutely no love at all for their owners, but in my experience that isn't true at all. It really does take longer to get to know a cat than it does a dog, and cats are not as eager to please as dogs are. However, cats really do show a lot of affection once they've been living with you for a while. They are genuinely affectionate, people just don't want to or don't bother giving them a chance, especially given the rep that dogs have.

The way we were thought in school is that it's a mouth that eats the bigger number, e.g. 7 > 4 [> is greater than], and 2 < 5 [< is less than]. So the 'mouth' is facing towards the better one.

A mad woman used to live in Waterford with her 3 dogs. She died in her home and was found almost two weeks later. The front door was open, two of her dogs lay dead at her side, and one was still alive but starved and dehydrated.

My brother's dog pined so bad when he was away that he wouldn't eat or drink or leave my brother's room. His nose was hot and dry, and we thought he'd die. As soon as my brother walked into the house the dog legged it to him. After an hour or so of adoration and celebration, he went and stuffed his face

1. Dogs are HIGHLY intelligent. There is a bond between them and (very kind) owners. He may not have understood the funeral, but he knew where to find his owner and friend.

Not to derail the thread, but I hate when people spew this sentamental bull****. Sure the guy died and that's bad. He has a family. But I feel just as bad when a Taliban insurgent dies in an airstrike or blows himself up. He has a family too.

Don't shove this crap at me about 'fighting for freedom'. They're fighting to keep an eye on the world and for their own interests (oil mostly). Don't believe this star spangled bs. I'm no conspiracy nut or anti-american in the slightest, but let's call a spade a spade here.

Back on topic: Dogs are the best companion a man can have. I seen a story similar to this a few months back. A Libyan rebel was fighting in the desert and his dog was with him in the pickup truck. Anyway he got shot and because Ghadaffi's troops were advancing the rebels had to abandon his body.

A few days later when they advanced again a few rebels went to collect his body and bury him. They found his dog lying beside him dead having dehydrated, refusing to leave his friends side.
