Hi wf69,quick question.at midland game fair last year in UK guy told me that you can't mix decoy brands in your pattern I.e flambeau+greenhead etc.have you found this at all?what about different species made by different manufactures.can't say that I've found this but then I've had some bad days devoting and this might be the reason.I've found no issue on wet, wild or overcast days but calm and sunny days?(possibly?)

I rarely use a pattern except for sea ducks. Variety in your decoy spread is more important in my opinion, a few teal mixed in with a dozen mallards adds variety and realism. Keep the teal together. Space the mallards about a meter apart and leave a landing spot in the centre. Face the deeks into the wind. Location is perhaps the most important aspect of waterfowling. Basically, hunt where you’ve seen ducks. Shallow backwaters off big rivers, smaller ponds, big ponds, etc. - try and situate on their preferred flight lines. Confidence decoys, a ( heron, seagull, pigeon, crow etc.) add that settled look and realism.

Pick up any shiny objects- plastic bottles, cans etc. -flotsam and jetsam - in the vicinity of your hide.

    Highduck,

I must have at least 5-6 different brand of decoy and mix and match all the time. Never had a problem. Keep it simple.

yeah not at home tonight so can get the pictures,
yeah about mixing the brands, thats ****e, i mix brands, but i like to keep species together, but mix them as they would naturally, ie wigeon&teal, Black & Whites & golden eyes and pochards!
I would never mix magaum decoys with lifesize, i only use life size!;)

This set-up works well for small ponds with some cover: reeds, etc. .

I like to use a few oversized decoys on the leading or outside edge, the ducks/geese see them further out and it does not seem to effect the birds at all once they commit. Your milage may vary.

Heres my preferred decoy set up for big lakes when the shooting is in full swing, in the early part of the season the Black and whites, wigeon, pochard and golden eyes would be removed and more mallard and teal added.. hope this helps.
