3DS - is it worth it?

I'm contemplating buying the 3DS at some stage, but the question I ask is; is it worth it? It seems like the only game worth having is Zelda!

Zelda is the only game worth having. Dead or Alive Dimensions is decent as is Ghost Recon, but neither would warrant buying a console. Even Zelda has lost some of it's shine for me through sheer familiarity.

I bought my 3DS at launch, sold it a couple of months ago and haven't regretted it. Even the recent price cut hasn't tempted me back.

I owned a DS a while ago and sold it as well because I just got fed up with the quality of games. Seems like the 3DS is following the same path so perhaps I'll give it a miss unless someone can give me a good reason not to?

Nintendo have some big 3DS reveal on 13th of September, at least wait until then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

I actually love my 3DS, but I'd echo Retr0's advice: wait until the September 13th announcement. There's speculation that it could be a revised 3DS, which would infuriate me (and I'm sure many others). Hopefully it'll be some awesome game; that's what's needed!

To answer the op's question, is a 3DS worth it? Not a chance. Unless the annoucement is a slew of games then its still not going to be worth it.

It depends. I was a 3ds basher when it came out. Biggest problem for me was price tag and lack of games.

I bought my 3ds last Saturday. I am really really happy with it, but there is a reason why:

    1. I newer owned ds, so I have huge backlog of games that I allways wanted to play.
    2. After spending few hours with zelda game, I really felt in love with this 3d thing! It really works well. Zelda game is a perfect example. I can't go back to 2d when I play zelda.
    3. I am on a quest to get misses shadowhearth to play video games. 3ds/ds games + iPhone games are helping!
    4. I dont use 3ds for it's proper purpose. I drive, I don't get much breaks at work etc. Its my bedroom toy ( sounded dirty ). I am pc gamer to the core, but when I want to relax, instead of watching telly before sleep, I fire up ds with professor leyton or ff tactics a2.

In summary: if you newer owned ds, then 3ds is a great bargain. You can play alot of ds games while waiting for 3ds games to come out.

If you buy it, just because you look for good 3ds games, then I better wait.

Note: I am antynintendo fanboy after wii bull****. 3ds and ds helping me to change my mind little by little.

I don't think it's worth it right now.

Wait for the games library to increase and the price to decrease.

Or buy a DSi & save yourself a packet. The 3DS needs its own games to make it worth it, I'm a fan of the 3D in Zelda etc...but I'd kill for something else to play on it. Getting very very old at this point,

you wount save much money on dsi... plus when games will start coming out, you will trade in your DSi for 2 pennies and buy 3ds?

A 2nd hand DSi is a long way from the price of a 3DS though isn't it?

Would you buy a PS3 to play your PS2 games? Would you buy an Xbox 360 to play Xbox 1 games? No you wouldn't. Its great that the compatibility is there, but at the moment its only covering a rather large hole in the 3DS' own lineup.

If they both cost 20 more than their predecessors and actually were backward-compatible then probably. :pac:

I swear, it feels like every day you're nailing on the same points about the 3DS, and your penchant for hyperbole makes it very easy to dismiss them,
even though they've got some merit.

No, but the original point made was that if you've never had a DS then picking up a 3DS looks like quite the bargain right now.

Yeah there's only around thirty euro difference between the DSi and 3DS on amazon. If you're a first time DS owner, then the latter is more attractive - future proof, better screen, better controls etc... All that plus the ability to play every DS game with no restrictions (region or otherwise). That's automatically many hundreds of great games on the best tech available.

With a 3DS on the way, there are few games I'm particularly pumped about (and the one I do want requires a US console ). But upgrading from my launch day DS phat is the most exciting prospect for me. It's served me well, but a pretty new screen is long overdue :)

For anyone with a DSi though, waiting is the best option. See what happens. I doubt there's a hardware revision on the cards, but see how the potentially exciting games on the horizon turn out before taking the plunge.

To be honest if you bought a 3DS at launch and are shocked and appalled at the lack of games on the system then it's obviously the first console you've bought at launch. Every console goes through this phase before developers get to grips with the console or decide that the console ownership figure have reached a fgure where it's viable to create games for it.

Well, no, you post interesting stuff generally, just nothing pertaining to the 3DS.

Anyways, on topic. I'm starting to get excited about 3DS, little bit, nothing to shoot me out my gaf to go buy it, but I can see myself picking one up within a year. It needs five must-buy games to justify buying it, I'm up to about 4:

    Super Mario
    Mario Kart 7
    SSFIV:AE (I'm a whore for the SF)
    Luigi's Mansion 2

There's just nothing interesting to post about it :p I've said many times I love the 3DS, love the effect, the unit itself, & OoT on it is incredible. Just so frustrating that we're still waiting on anything else

Your must have list is more or less a carbon copy of my own...I just thought after almost 6 months we'd have had at least one of them.

Anyway, fingers crossed for the upcoming annoucement.

    Also 3DS blows!!

    Games please Nintendo!!

The DS has currently overtaken the SNES as my personal best console ever due to how many amazing games were on it.

Persona 3, while great, did follow in the footsteps of Azure Dreams. Now put that on the 3DS and I'll buy one.

The new 3DS ads on television here are interesting. Playing down the 3D to an extent while playing up the 'next gen' hardware and graphics. It's a tough sell though, especially when the games don't look much better than the PSP and the Vita is around the corner.

At least they're trying to differentiate it from the DS now though, with the 'it's not DS, it's 3DS' tagline.

Also I heard Devil Survivor Overclocked only has 3D in the intro and afte that it's 2D all the way.

Have been meaning to check Azure Dreams out.

Correct you are sir!! The DS rules and they're still getting amazing games released on it. Problem is the retailers in Ireland only stock rubbish shovelware/dating simulation rubbish which means real gamers have to trawl through the shíte to get to the gems

    BULLSH!T!!!!!

I wish people would understand there is a 3d SLIDER on the side of the system to work out what is best for your eyes, I have mine near the bottom to the middle and looks amazing. Or you can just turn the 3D off....

Also the price cut was because Mammys see the 3DS as a DS not a new system and think little timmys eyes will be destroyed using the 3D on it, where as some doctors have said the 3D on the system is good for a childs eye development. Helps them focus more.

No, I used to be a Nintendo fan in the day but in my opinion that brand sold out big time. On the 3ds you dont even have a bloody web broser and really the only decent games ie Zelda will be few and far between. I myself got the xperia play phone (playstation certified) and with honesty I havent looked back. Decent games, only a few euro to download, you dont need discs and its got great internet and its also a phone.

Therein lies Nintendo's big mistake: having 3D as the selling point. What's far more interesting is a DS with better technology. Interestingly, the PS Vita seems to be getting right - Sony are selling the various pieces of impressive technology rather than a single feature. TBH, if Nintendo had said 'DS2' as opposed to '3DS' they may have enjoyed greater success from the off.

I heard on ScrewAttack's hard news that Nintendo were (considering) bringing out a new model for the 3DS, repackaging it, de-emphasising the 3D as it's selling point.

Gosh I can't believe this 3D thing hasn't gone down well. I really thought it would be huge. That said maybe others are like me, getting big headaches pretty quickly with the 3D. Either that or there isn't enough must-have games to warrant a purchase.

The best part of the 3DS for me is that my mate bought one so i've basically inherited his DS...my first handheld console lol.

It's still a rumour at this point, we'll know in september if there's any truth behind it. It seems a bit drastic for me for it to be true.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them bring out a non-3D version at a lower price point to sit alongside the 3DS on the shelves. People just don't use the 3D - it's awkward to find the sweetspot, it's hard to focus on and it adds nothing to the gameplay.

If you offered me a 3DS without 3D for €100, I'd snap it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,041 ✭✭✭pdbhp

I personally couldn't give a flying fúck about 3D all I'm concerned about is games, good games not shovelware shíte.

We need top devs like Konami, Treasure, Cave etc. to start bringing out the titles we all love to play.

    Also 3D porn!!

What type of gameplay is in this game? broken sword like? or ?

I'm very tempted to pick up the 3ds, havent had so much want for a handheld before, its zelda thats doing it for me, plus Mario kart and super mario coming out on it soon which look fuggin awesome.

What are the game prices like for the standard DS games? i saw zelda was 40 which is pricey for a handheld game imo, but its friggin OOT, worth every penny.

But i suspect the standard DS games would be in the 20-25 range??

I'm gonna break away from PC gaming as its going down the ****ter IMO

I sold my DS maybe 3 or more years ago, when the only games on the shelves seemed to be Kiddy-orientated games and that was about it - I'm not a gamer enough to browse online for titles.

Considering that my gaming will be taken up by Deus Ex, Dead Island and then Skyrimm, I don't know if I'll be able to have any time left over.

I am pc gamer myself m8, it's not going down hill, maybe you just need t make a break? ;)

I spend lots of time on 3ds, but I play ds games. I took oot as a game with console. If you go online and browse, you canfind ds games for a good price. I am waiting on advance wars which I picked for 14eu and castlevania order of eclossia ( I can't spell it, sorry ) for 21.98eu.

Mario games are still idiotic price, so I just suggest to grab those on adverts.ie or donedeal.ie for 10eu etc.

I'm PC gaming since 1995, trust me its going downhill ;)

Less focus on gameplay or providing a finished product, and more focus on making the game looking nice and shiney and fleecing you for all your $$$$ with DLC and other BS.

Thats why im leaning towards a 3DS, as Nintendo have always focused on gameplay ;)

I'm really wondering what Nintendo are at. While the recent price cut has stimulated sales somewhat I don't think repackaging and jacking up the price (as they always do) is going to help too much. Even the Wii remodelling is weird, it'll be the same except with no GC support, how cheap is it gonna end up being?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,469 ✭✭✭✭GTR63

The 3DS will be ok as long as we get some new games. I really want to see some brand new games like the DS had games like Layton,Ace Attourney (I know it had 1 game on the gba),Ghost Trick,The World Ends With You,Hotel Dusk & more. For me its titles like them that defined the DS. Yeah I want a new Pokemon, Advance Wars & Mario and Luigi RPG but its was the great titles that you didn't see coming that made the DS. I really do like the look of the Vita console but besides Uncharted(clearly its killer app like it was for the PS3) & 1 or 2 other titles i'm not that bothered about the rest of the software line up.
