No because if you've been running in shoes for a long time, and suddenly jump over to an equivalent distance without, you'll f*ck yourself up pretty sharp.

I can also recommend cycling on a seatpost. Also feels much better. Saddles are an unneccessary evil that give the illusion of comfort.

:D - I'd certainly be putting as much weight on the handles and pedals as possible in this case.

    Barefoot running - no thanks.

So we'll say one wanted to do this properly what would be the first thing you should start from.
Bear in mind id run in asics gels or equivalent in the gym and also play footbal/hurling in predators.

As in where do you start and how do u progress w/o f!ck!n yourself up?

Innov8 do a stage progression whereby I thnk they've 3 shoes with less and less padding before you eventually go barefoot.

Or you could start out doing a couple of hundred meters of a run barefoot before putting on shoes, and gradually adding to it. Most athletics guys tend to say add no more than 10% per week to total training volume so you can see why it would take so long to move fully barefoot.

Mark Sisson wrote about it a while ago, it should be on his marksdailyapple.com site if you can find it.

I ran the San Francisco marathon back in 2008 and there was an older man (probably in his late sixties) running it in the bare feet.

I'd say it's just a matter of starting with a very small distance and building it up extremely slowly. I wouldn't like to try it in the treadmill though. You've more control on the road.

No way would I let anyone run barefoot on one of our treadmills.

Over the last 15 years, I've seen at least 10 people fall off threadmills whilst running at high speeds. It's not pretty.

If they were running barefoot and then had an accident on a threadmill, I imagine the gym would be liable as a result of allowing it in the first place.

Running on a treadmill barefoot is a bit grim, hygienically.

Pick up a pair of Vibrams - I did and I'm ****ing delighted with them. Even the treadmill feels nicer for running, never mind grass, woods, and so on.
Do take it slightly easy with them though, you feel EVERYTHING more, good and bad.

I've been considering taking the VFF plunge for a while now, looking at these: http://birthdayshoes.com/komodo: but at 130e, i'm still hesitant!

    Any negatives with them?

Currently using these lads: http://www.trizone.ie/index.php/running/running-shoes/mens/neutral/saucony-kinvara-2391.html find them great for general workouts with sprints included as they're pretty lightweight but were pretty agressive on the calfs for the first few weeks if I was doing anything over 2k.

Been using Vibrams, bought for €105, 3 months old and the material by the side of the big toes has worn away, not very durable.

Build up distance slowly and don't sprint, max 12kph probably, fartlek, slow- fast-slow, etc. Max. 20 mins on the treadmill. 3 days in the week max.

Hygiene? Non issue I'd say. Clean feet. Soles of runners if used outdoors possibly more questionable.

My posture is far better barefoot, more upright, engage core more, short strides. Hard on calves and ankle to begin with. Feel far better getting off the treadmill after running barefoot than after using trainers.

Aside from chap seen by poster above (not me) I'd imagine it difficult to find places to run barefoot. Treadmill's near ideal.

    Feels better.
