In a shocking development out of Cupertino, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has stepped down, the board naming Tim Cook as his replacement. The company said "Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," and Steve himself had this to say:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

    Steve

Sad day for Apple. One of the most enterprising, innovative and inspiring CEOs in the Business World. Apple Keynotes just won't be the same!

    From reuters:
(Reuters) - Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs on Wednesday resigned as chief executive of Apple Inc in a stunning move at the technology giant he co-founded in a garage.

The 55-year-old Apple co-founder and pancreatic cancer survivor has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17.

Apple said Steve Jobs has been elected chairman and Tim Cook has been elected CEO.

Apple won't be the same without him. Whatever you may say about him as an individual he's been a truly phenomenal CEO. Best of luck to him.

Don't care for tim cook at all. Nor do many others from what I hear. It'll be intersting to watch the stock price on this. I've always maintained that aapl is a bubble stock that also has far too much emphasis on jobs.

A lot of people will be watching the share price tomorrow

Wonder will take a hit but surely it has this factored in, this news is not a huge suprise

A sad day for Apple. He really turned the company around. From a failing company with huge losses to one of the most valuable companies on the planet. The iPod, iPhone, iMac, iPad and all the other projects that gave Apple the name and image they have today were launched under his leadership.

He'll still be the Chairman of the board but this doesn't bode well for his health unfortunately. Stock is down 7%.

If he feels he can no longer meet his duties then sadly his health must be declining again.

At least he will still be on the board.

I figure they're pretty much ready to launch iPhone 5 so. They'll want Tim Cook to have an almost instant win. Reckon a launch is due within next month.

    Very said about this.

Not for Apple, they will go on.

But I've always admired Steve Jobs, he's an inspirational character.

From how he built up Apple, forced to leave, ended up coming back and turned it into the giant it is today.

Obviously his health is the reason which is sad as he's a young man and I'll miss his presentations, humour and 'One More Thing'.

Thought this photo showed how his health has declined over the years.

The cancer he has which is believe is the same as Brian Lenihan has only a 5% survival rate beyond 2 years from diagnosis. The liver transplant gives you more time but no a lot. Poor fella.

Shocking when you see those photos. Apple will be ok as they will have learned from the disaster the last time he left in the 80s but this is sad for him, his friends and family. Clearly he must have had bad news and even if it isn't confirmed as the worst news he clearly has a struggle ahead of him.

They are timing it now as the September product announcement will correct any drop in the shareprice and give the company momentum again after this announcement. The Apple pipeline has been quite (by their standards) for the last year so you could see things announced in September that no one even expects. iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, Macs, iOS, iTunes, i????, If it's in development and close to completion it will be rolled out in the September announcement in order to reset the internal and market mood.

He was diagnosed in 2003, it's amazing he made it this long!!

That's not to say that he's stepping down because he hasn't long to live or anything, but the workload that a CEO's position entails probably isn't particularly helpful when it comes to health.

[W]hat evidence is there that Apple is being engineered to operate independent of its founder? Unfortunately there is almost no organizational analysis for Apple. Unlike many of its contemporaries, there aren’t org charts or tell-all accounts on life in Cupertino. There are no anonymous “mini-aapl” blogs or tales from the disgruntled.

For this reason, a recent quote about the mysterious “Apple University” in Fortune caught my eye.

First a brief review of what was known.

Apple University was first mentioned in 2008 when Joel Podolny was hired from running Yale Management School to join Apple in creating this new “University”. I remember at the time thinking what such a thing might be. To leave the top job in one of the top business schools to join Apple must require some powerful incentives. I envisioned Apple entering into a far more ambitious iTunes project where they could be offering degree programs or teaching resources through the familiar store front.

But nothing was heard about Apple University again. Until yesterday.

According to the article in Fortune and some additional details from another source, Joel Podolny has been building an understanding of how Apple is run. He’s then been asked to codify this understanding into a curriculum that can be taught to Apple employees.

It's amazing how many of the headlines are reading like obituaries. In the Irish Times: "Products made Apple a leader" (emphasis mine).

Apple has been ready for this and Wall Street has been ready for this. Its not like SJ was hit by a car overnight; I'm sure they've been prepared for Tim Cook to take over for years. Jobs started his transition out of the driving seat a long time ago. I doubt the share price will see any long-term hit as a result of this announcement.

Having said that, Tim Cook is a top-notch bean counter but Jobs will really be irreplaceable in some ways. Like him or loathe him, he is one of a kind, I'm sure Apple will miss having such a gutsy visionary at the helm. I wish him all the best.

Here's the email Tim Cook sent out to Apple employees:
    Team:

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision I've ever made and it's been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steve's optimism for Apple's bright future.

Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve's ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple's unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.

    Tim

As already said, nobody can replace Jobs. But I think Cook is the kind of guy that will emphasise the team, something which even Jobs has been doing in recent keynotes.

Great Steve Jobs story, from Vic Gundotra (Senior Vice-President of Social Business for Google):

One Sunday morning, January 6th, 2008 I was attending religious services when my cell phone vibrated. As discreetly as possible, I checked the phone and noticed that my phone said "Caller ID unknown". I choose to ignore.

After services, as I was walking to my car with my family, I checked my cell phone messages. The message left was from Steve Jobs. "Vic, can you call me at home? I have something urgent to discuss" it said.

Before I even reached my car, I called Steve Jobs back. I was responsible for all mobile applications at Google, and in that role, had regular dealings with Steve. It was one of the perks of the job.

"Hey Steve - this is Vic", I said. "I'm sorry I didn't answer your call earlier. I was in religious services, and the caller ID said unknown, so I didn't pick up".

Steve laughed. He said, "Vic, unless the Caller ID said 'GOD', you should never pick up during services".

I laughed nervously. After all, while it was customary for Steve to call during the week upset about something, it was unusual for him to call me on Sunday and ask me to call his home. I wondered what was so important?

"So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I've already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow" said Steve.

"I've been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I'm not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn't have the right yellow gradient. It's just wrong and I'm going to have Greg fix it tomorrow. Is that okay with you?"

Of course this was okay with me. A few minutes later on that Sunday I received an email from Steve with the subject "Icon Ambulance". The email directed me to work with Greg Christie to fix the icon.

Since I was 11 years old and fell in love with an Apple II, I have dozens of stories to tell about Apple products. They have been a part of my life for decades. Even when I worked for 15 years for Bill Gates at Microsoft, I had a huge admiration for Steve and what Apple had produced.

But in the end, when I think about leadership, passion and attention to detail, I think back to the call I received from Steve Jobs on a Sunday morning in January. It was a lesson I'll never forget. CEOs should care about details. Even shades of yellow. On a Sunday.

To one of the greatest leaders I've ever met, my prayers and hopes are with you Steve.

    -Vic

SAN FRANCISCO—Following the resignation of Apple founder Steve Jobs, incoming CEO Tim Cook called a meeting of shareholders and members of the press Thursday morning to announce that he envisioned printers as the company’s future. “Laser, ink-jet, double-sided, color, black-and-white—the future of technology is in printers. I am absolutely convinced of that,” Cook explained to a packed auditorium as a montage of printers and people using printers played on a screen behind him. “What is the one thing people will always need? It’s obvious: printers. Printers with fax machines attached, printers that collate and staple, perhaps a printer that makes photocopies. Anything’s possible. It’s called innovation.” Cook concluded his remarks by assuring investors the release of upcoming Apple products such as the iPhone 5 would be postponed for at least four years so the company could throw all its time and resources into the creation of high-quality printers for the home and office.

Look fake as hell to me. The edges on the dress are too sharp and the hairline looks dodgy. And for that matter, why is he wearing a dress? This is Steve Jobs we are taking about. He will die wearing his turtleneck and blue jeans.

There are all kinds oddness with that photo. Where is he? Who is that guy? Who is he posing for ( not the cameraman who took that picture for Jobs is staring to his left). Why is he wearing, for the first time in his life, some shorts ( or a dress?). Looks like the head is put on a body.
