Any chance that anyone's knows of a scrapped BMW D12 for parts (especially exhust manifold, starting handle, alternator, etc etc). It's an old single-cylinder diesel inboard, about 20 years old.

Thanks for that - but I don't think it is feasible to try and get it back from the UK. I'll save a search in eBay though.

    Hi Pat,

There is a yahoo group dedicated to the D12/D7, and it might be worth asking there, or drop a line to George on this site: http://wavelength30.zxq.net/BMWD7.htm

PH Marine in the UK do still dabble in spare parts, but they can be pricey (I'm currently forking out for a new head gasket for my D7)

The few spare parts I have I'm going to hang on to, sorry. (My alternator never worked by the way. A common fault in the D7).

Hey, thanks for that. Nice to 'meet' someone who has one. I am doing up the D12 for a friend. It's not too bad I think - it's got a cracked exhaust manifold though. And I can't get the flywheel off the crankshaft, but I'm being patient with it. The D12 has four tapped holes on the cranksshaft where the starting hanle goes, and it seems to me that it sould be easy enough to fit a pulley to it for an alternator, bored out for the crankshaft.
I'll follow up with the yahoo group - wasn't aware of it.
I had seen the http://wavelength30.zxq.net/BMWD7.htm. The D12 is quite different to D7 in some respects. Also, I don't think it's worth spending much money on.

Anyone got a lead on a BMW D12 inboard diesel for parts (or just good cyclinder head)? It's a small single-cylinder of about 10 hp and about 20 years old.

Try these http://www.phmarine.co.uk/bmw.html or sign up to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bmwmarineengines/
It might also be worth asking on http://www.iwai.ie/forum/list.php?1 there are a lot of clever heads there.:)

If it were me I think I would replace it with a beta, yanmar,or kubota marine 12 hp a lot easier to get parts for :D

It's a very budget job I'm afraid. How much approx would one pay for a cheap but fairly decent second-hand inboard diesel engine of 8 to 10hp?

Is there a lot involved in trying to get a different engine to fit with the different mountings etc?

Here is one that might be worth a look http://rte.buyandsell.ie/search/for-sale/sports-and-leisure/dublin/-/inboard-engine-and-gearbox should be no problem to hook up to your prop shaft. Here's another one http://www.apolloduck.ie/display.phtml?aid=199946

I'd appreciate if you would let me know if you come across another half-decent D7 that's cheap - it woudl probably be the easiest option to fit in the boat.

    thanks

If found a D12 head for you, new.....
    But it's in Canada.....
And the asking price is 1,600 dollars (no, I didn't put in an extra zero by mistake). Let me know if you want details as I'll be letting it pass.

Any chance you would have a spare starting handle for D12??
