Sleeping with the phone on?

Regularly, around 11pm, the missus says "Oh I forgot to ring X and ask her if she's coming here tomorrow."
    I say "Text her."
She says "It's too late. I might wake her."
I say "Surely she'd have turned her phone off if she has gone to bed."
She says "No, she wouldn't. I don't do that."
    I say "That's ridiculous."

I know my father never turns his off, but that's because he's forgotten his PIN.

So, do you turn off your mobile at night?

I don't know anyone who turns their phone off at night. I use mine as an alarm as do most people I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,938 ✭✭✭mackg

I usually leave mine on and charge it at night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,453 ✭✭✭Shenshen

    Usually, yes.
But then, it would be in my handbag somewhere downstairs, and with the sound turned off as always.

Turn off. Save battery & get more sleep

+ you never know in a few years they might discover phones cause cancer after all

Yes but drunken 1.30 am friends calls and unless it's an emergency, I seldom get anybody ringing me later in the night than that .

the alarm will still work with it turned off with 99% of all phones

Don't pretty much all phones sound the alarm even when they're switched off? Mine does, same with everyone else I know.

I hate having a phone, so I switch it off most of the time and regularly leave it at home when I'm out.

Stupid poll. Why ask one question in the thread title and then ask an oppositely-biased one in the poll?

Yes, I answered it wrong. :/

Why would you turn off your phone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

I leave mine on, you never know when someone might need to get in touch in an emergency

Also I just never think to turn it off

Yup, I've no landline so I keep my mobile on in case of emergency. I also use it to listen to music; it helps me fall asleep.

Mobile phones are evil and would kill you and your family if they got a chance.

    So I switch mine off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,443 ✭✭✭Bipolar Joe

OK, everyone who leaves there phone on at night to use as an alarm, set an alarm to go off in sixty seconds, switch it off and see if it rings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭flutterflye

I have it on all the time incase of emergencies.

So your phone doesn't go off during the night and wake you up..

Of course I turn off my mobile phone at night.

I also pull out the landline and turn off the fridge, to ensure I get a good nights sleep and save a few cents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

    Mine is always on 24/7.

I don't want them fecking emergencies getting a chance to wake me up. Besides I'm no good to do anything about it unless I've had a good nights sleep

This is true, but I have no other clock in my bedroom. So if I turn it off, when I wake up I have to turn it back on before I can check the time and see how much time I've left to sleep before my alarm goes off.

That makes no sense. Just lie in bed dozing until it goes off.

If I know how much I have left to sleep and it isn't much then I definitely won't be able to sleep

You should never leave your handbag down stairs at night time...burglars!! :O At least try and make it difficult for them if they do manage to get in!

    Nope, it doesn't

    It's a smart phone

Ditto :D I'm a very grumpy person when I have been woken up during the night so it's better for my relationships to keep it on silent while sleeping :P

yeah i cant believe all the people who answer "I leave it on 'cause I use the alarm on my phone" BTW I turn mine off any emergency that happens during the night can wait until morning when my brain is actually functioning!

    Because you're wasting power.

android, turning it off, turns it off, unsurprisingly

At night, I switch off my mobile, leave house phone off the hook, close window shutters and barricade my front door.

Me too. I like to know the time when I wake up. My room is completely dark, so it could be 10 mins to getting up time, or 2 hours. That makes a difference if you need to pee ;):D

I leave it on, alarm is handy and if anything happened late at night I can be rung.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

    Never off.

What if somebody needed to contact you urgently?

I wouldn't send a non-urgent text late at night though...

You can't believe that some people have a phone that needs to be left on in order for the alarm to work? Riiight...

I always leave mine on because, yes shockingly enough, its a HTC that means it needs to be on in order for the alarm to work.

My boyfriend always turns his off, and yes it is irritating when I need to get in contact with him late and I can't.

So you should keep it upstairs so they have to come into your room and find it? No thanks.

As with a lot of people here, I keep mine on in case something should happen that I need to know about asap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

Anyone who says any thing about you waking them up by a txt/call is a moron. Put it on silent. You can even sort people into groups so that some people can ring through. I do this for some family members in case there is an emergency, everyone else is on silent when I am asleep.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,876 ✭✭✭Spread

Mobiles on silent and plug pulled on landline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 513 ✭✭✭x_Ellie_x

I leave mine on but I set it to silent. I use it as an alarm clock too. Thankfully, the phone I have as a separate sound setting for the alarm and the phonetone. My old phone didn't, if you set it to silent the alarm would be silent too. Used to annoy me to no end.

I leave my phone on but turn the data off so incoming mails don't wake me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

I leave mine on for alarms, and more recently to get woken up when the recruitment place rings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

My phone is always on, turning it off would be like murder. Didn't any of you people see short circuit?
