What do you think, feminism doesn't seem to be compatible with most religions.

Easier to argue that atheism has fueled feminism.

Feminism is a state of mind not being...sure most of them only think they're women.

People copping on to themselves has fuelled athiesm IMHO.

I see where you're going with your point, but no, I would imagine that it is one tiny aspect of many, that has altered over time leading to a general change in societal mind set.
Science and factual evidence would be way more likely to have "fueled athiesm".

How sexist of you to insinuate feminism can be used as fuel!!1!

Q: How many feminists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    A:
    That's not funny.

For an absolutely amazing look into feminism, watch the Man Woman Myth videos. Every fact is attributed, it's fantastic. Man after my own heart.

I can see the OPs logic, women are pretty much sub-human in a lot of religions.
No catholic women priests, more rights for men than women in Islam etc...

Chicken and egg thing with regard to atheism though.

No - feminism has nothing to do with enlightenment.

Maybe if all those feminists shut up for a minute and made some sandwiches we'd all be better off.

How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb: 12

    One to screw it in,
one to excoriate men for creating the need for illumination,
one to blame men for inventing such a faulty means of illumination,
one to suggest the whole "screwing" bit to be too "rape-like",
one to deconstruct the lightbulb itself as being phallic,
one to blame men for not changing the bulb,
one to blame men for trying to change the bulb instead of letting a woman do it,
one to blame men for creating a society that discourages women from changing light bulbs,
one to blame men for creating a society where women change too many light bulbs,
one to advocate that lightbulb changers should have wage parity with electricians,
one to alert the media that women are now "out-lightbulbing" men,
one to just sit there taking pictures for her blog for photo-evidence that men are unnecessary.

Atheism as a movement/philosophy predates feminism by about 300 years.

No - feminism has nothing to do with enlightenment.

Given that feminism emerged during the enlightenment ...

But most of the original feminists were Christians and used Christianity to support their arguments. So, no.

I would imagine that freedom of speech and expression has simultaneously fueled both atheism and feminism. I bet in the 1950's there were far far more atheists and feminists both than was apparent, but they were not in a position to be open about this as society would have been hostile to such views. But with the advancement in society towards people being able to express opinions which challenged the zeitgeist openly more people 'came out'.

Also things like television, radio, the internet and other technological advancements which meant information could be shared more easily and with a greater number of people meant that people who may never have considered the questions of feminism or atheism heard arguments for them and did for the first time.

I think both viewpoints became more prevalent side by side and for a lot of the same reasons but without having any particularly strong influence on each other.

Perhaps. I imagine that a growing feminism in majority Catholic countries like Ireland, would see a lot of women turn against the church based on well being treated like second hand citizens. Doesn't make them atheist though.

Accept Christ or get out of a Catholic country!

if you're going to be in constant opposition which seems to be the way atheism fueled itself then yes.

Atheists believe there is no God.
    It's just another belief system.

Athiesm is a lack of belief in a higher power or being.
A lack of belief is not a belief.
Even if it were, a belief system does not equate to a religious faith.

What is wrong with people?!

    It's just another belief system.

Atheists don't believe there is a god because there is no evidence supporting it.

Religeons believe there is a God despite a lack of evidence.

There is a big difference there in my eyes.

Overstatement. Women's 'humanity' is essential in all the Hebraic religions. Idealised as much as they're debased, the old Madonna/Whore dichotomy.

Atheism isn't a movement or a philosophy, it's simply a lack of belief in magic and all that jazz....so therefore predates a lot more than feminism.

there is a difference between people abandoning the RCC(as an example) and people becoming atheists.

First of all humanists and athiests are not the same thing.
Secondly, there is no bible for athiesm!
There are some people who publish rubbish books and try and pass them off as a sort of rule book for athiests.

People who look down on other peoples beliefs are assholes not atheists, you get religious ones and non-religious ones.

As for agnosticism, well it always just seemed like sitting on the fence really. I wouldn't discount that there could be some sort of creator we don't know about but I would definitely say all the gods humans follow don't exist, so while I can say I don't know whether the universe was created by something or not I can still call myself an atheist.

So your problem is not with gender restricted roles, just with the stuff that comes along with it? How many women play in the premiership? How many men play camogie?

I think you know what I meant. Atheism started gaining new ground in Europe anyway about 16th century, feminism as we know it took off in the 19th.

You said it yourself, Atheists believe something; God doesn't exist. How did they come to that conclusion? They close their eyes to truth!

They have a belief system, with no evidence to support it.

I have my faith back up by years of answered prayers.

Atheism has taken on a role,by a majority and yes i will be so bold to say majority,of starting a complete opposition to any faith believing person or organisation.

True. The industrial revolution had a massive impact on both.
