Bjorn Kuipers of the Netherlands will referee the European Super Cup match between Barcelona and FC Porto on Friday.
The 38-year-old Kuipers, who joined the FIFA international list of referees in 2006, was appointed by UEFA on Wednesday.
He handled Porto's 5-1 victory over Villarreal in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals in April.
Kuipers was chosen by FIFA last season to officiate African champion TP Mazembe's 2-0 win over South America's Internacional in the Club World Cup semifinals in Abu Dhabi.
UEFA's choice of Kuipers for the match in Monaco, between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League, suggests he is a strong candidate to referee at the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

If Barca wins (looks likely) Guardiola becomes the most successful manager in Barca history

Gerard Pique out with injury but Alexis Sánchez should be back

Barca centre backs will either be two dmf - Mascherano and Busquets, or one of them with Fontas, an inexperience youth player. So it's hardly a foregone conclusion, especially with the attacking talents that Porto have.

If Pep wins he will have added another title but as the man has said himself whatever he does will never compare to what Cruyff brought and achieved for the club.

Pep is the most humble of persons - a complete gent.

Nothing but respect and kind words for everyone and never slow to slap down those who try and exalt him and his teams achievements.

How long has Guardiola said he'd stay at Barca? I've always heard him hint that he won't be there for years to come.

It would be intriguing to see how he'd get on at another club.

I think the common thinking is that he is gone at the end of the season :(

Why would Abidal not be playing?

Falcao a massive loss for Porto, he scored 18 goals in 16 games in the Europa League last season. (went to Atletico Madrid for €40m)

I say if Porto had all the team that won the Europa League last season they could have pullen up an upset, but I say Barca will win this one now for sure.

    What age is Falcao?!

Wiki says 25. I think he looks way older than that!

I hope Barcelona win tonight! :)

Nice pre-game appetiser on ITV 4+1 right now, Barcelona's 50 Greatest Goals to enjoy. Let's get Cesc a treble tonight, 3 trophies in 2 weeks for him (I hope!).

Rte suck at that. It's game likes this where you see Biscuits loss to Barca. Don't get me wrong Keita is quality, but Biscuits help's them flow.

having your jersey pulled like that would not bring you to the floor like it did Dani Alves.

The way Messi took that round the keeper was brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭redout

So that goal completes the set for Messi.

Now scored in every single competition he has played in for Barça.

Pedro done it before - scored in all 6 the year they won the 6 cups.

(la Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions league, Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup)

What's that, Messi's 4th official goal of the season already without the season having properly started? Outrageous, wouldn't be surprised to see him hit 60 this season.

Will surely go down as the greatest player of all time.

    2 and a half games - 4 goals - 2 assists thus far.

Barring injury he should have another great season.

Can't be arsed to watch a game of football being played on top of the Monaco Municipal Underground Car Park. Wretched joke of a pitch.

Intent was definitely there so was a sending off but Mascherano made a meal of that again.
