Do you wash your new clothes before wearing them for the 1st time?

When you buy new clothes do you wash them beforehand or just wear them straight away?

I was reading another thread and it mentioned something about washing new underwear before wearing, I guess because you don't know who's handled them or sneezed on them etc. And then it made me think about the clothes you buy and how many other people have tried on the same item of clothing. It's a bit

If I get new clothes I'm so excited about the new purchase I put it on straight away. Haven't died from doing so yet. Is it something you should do or is it more an OCD thing?

I'd wash new sheets / duvet covers before putting them on my bed for the first time, to make them softer and to make them smell nice.
Wouldn't do the same with new clothes though ... Not sure why. Habit, I guess.

If something is new I don't wash it.

I wash certain dark jeans beforehand because if it rains the dye can run on your legs if they haven't been washed before. Doesn't happen with cheap jeans though so I usually don't have to bother.

I have sometimes ironed a new shirt when it's taken out of it's package but new clothes go straight on .Of course if they looked to worn or man handled then I might not wear at all but never washed .

No. would never occur to me to do that. even with the things that specifically say wash before wear (like jeans etc) cause I'm just that laid back

Really, genuinely don't have a problem with shop or factory staff having handled my boxers. It's not like they were wearing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭stinkle

I dont normally, but got a new top in a sale last week - I thought it smelled like the shop but when I got home I realised it was perfume. Guess someone had worn it then returned it (lack of tags should have been a giveaway). Haven't bought anything new since, but I might start washing everything new in future as a result!:pac:

Nope never. If Im after buying a jumper or jacket or some other form of upper body attire I'll usually pop it on right there in the shop.

Always wash my jocks before wearing them.

Was wearing them sans wash, and ended up at evening time with ballsack like a pair of ripe plums blanched in boiling water.

Fcukers 'all worked up' and weeping with severe wine glow.

Frikken vicose fibres lit the fcukers up and no salving could calm them down.

Washing my skiddies first sorted it all out

    Just my experience.

I love the nice crisp feel of brand new clothes, that's half the attraction for me. They never feel the same after washing, so no, I don't wash before wearing. Also I've enough laundry to be going on with without washing new stuff too! The only exception would be if I bought something in a sale and it looked a bit shop soiled, I might wash it. But I'm so lazy, as often as not I'd just rub the stain with a baby wipe :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭strandroad

I don't usually wash new stuff, too lazy.

    HOWEVER

Apparently sometimes clothes are treated with some sort of chemicals after they are sewn together to prevent crumpling, electrostatics etc., sometimes also sprayed with something similar to ironing spray so that they hang better. If you're allergic you may react badly to this stuff.

I wash new t-shirts and jeans because you never know who has tried them on. I don't wash boxer shorts and socks because shops don't allow people to try on underwear. I also have irritable skin and new clothes can make me itch, especially jeans.

Definitely not-that would be extra work-who needs that?

I take it none of you have worked in a clothes shop then? The clothes get manky with the amount of people that try them on.

An example of why you should wash your clothes before you wear them would be a kid sneezing all over a jacket. It looked like Vigo the Carpathian had been on the loose. It was just scraped off and put back on the hanger.

    thats rediculous.
Ya in non bio for newborn baby up to 6 months to be softer on their skin. But not for myself.
sometimes i do it if i come home with a hoody or tshirt thats a bigger, baggier fit then i thought, so i just wash it so i can shrink it abit in the dryer.

By that logic there is probably even more reason to wash all your food when served up in a restaurant or bought prepackaged in a shop, you're putting it directly in your mouth. Same goes for money.

No, I don't wash new clothes before wearing as I am usually grabbing something on the way home from work to wear out the same night or next day. I do sniff under the arms though to make sure that no sweaty-betty tried it on before me.

I think the clothes must be cleaned before getting to our shops as I have always wondered about cheap clothes from India slums . If they weren't cleaned, surely they would be filthy?

That is very true. As I said in my OP, I don't do it myself just wondered did others do it and why. Seems quite OCD-ish.

Shirts, for some reason bug the shít out of me when they're brand new. Anything else I'll just wear, but shirts, cheap or expensive, I can't wear until they've gone through a 30min wash at least.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

Of course not, if I did then I'd have to be foretold by my mates when they're planning to make me wear a funny tshirt out some night.

    ARE YOU FOR REAL???

The best thing about new clothes is that new clothes feel. Putting on a brand spanking new pair of socks is like putting phucking clouds on your feet motherphucker. The nice fresh smell off a new hoodie as it caresses your skin with all its fresh cottony goodness.

Phuck you anyone who washes their new clothes, you're like the grinch of clothes ya bastads.

Feck bought some new boxers today, didn't wash them, you have me thinking now :(

    Ah ffs
Yes, it is DEFINITELY an OCD thing
OCD is an anxiety disorder, it is a serious medical condition. I'm *so* sick and tired of people coming out with things like "Dude, I totally have OCD" or "I'm completely OCD Positive". No you're not. You're just anally retentive.

Sorry Herb, not a rant at you, but people way over-use the term OCD.

As for washing clothes before I use them, no, I usually give them a good smellin' first. If they don't smell of changing room sweat, then they're fine.

On the other hand, I did once walk into a changing room in Arnotts and see Bjorn Borg underwear in there... so if underwear or swimwear is not in a pack, then yes I wash it.

The chances of you getting infected from wearing boxers that may or may not have been sneezed on are so slim it's not even funny. Even if you sniffed every inch of the boxers with unmerciful force you would 99.9999% (I came up with this statistic based on strenuous scientific research) not catch anything.

No way! The best thing about new clothes is that they fit so well. The more you wash clothes the more they go out of shape...I love the feel and fit of new clothes! Insanity to wash them first...plus why put that extra work on The Mammy :)
