This thread is solely for picks. No chat, chat goes in the discussion thread.

When selecting a pick, a picture would be ideal followed maybe by a short paragraph as to why you selected this pick.

After you pick, you must PM the next user to inform them that it is their turn.

You cannot pick two picks in a row from the same team, i.e if you select Rooney in round 1 you must not pick a Man United player in round 2.

You must not have any more than three players from a single team on your team.

Every user has 24 hours to make a pick. If that time elapses the next user gets to pick regardless. The initial user who forego their pick can pick whenever they get back online.

Round 4 is the Premier League Legened round and Round 9 is the rest of the world round. To select a player in round 4 he must be retired from the game and in round 9 your selection must not play in England.

    The order is as follows;

    1 MarkC91
    2 Mitch Connor
    3 Copper Pipe
    4 Blatter
    5 Redzerdrog
    6 ynwa_17
    7 LuckyCharms
    8 Aston Martin
    9 Rigor Mortis
    10 Xavi6
    11 whatawaster
    12 bUILDERtHEbOB
    13 Bounty Hunter
    14 Noel J
    15 bamboozling
    16 LiamO
    17 Cole Train
    18 Eugenious
    19 G.K.
    20 DOC09UNAM

First pick is MarkC91. The very best of luck to everybody.

Sergio Aguero: I reckon he will have a good season with City and will be central to any success they have especially due to his link up play with David Silva.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,690 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Wayne Rooney. I reckon he is going to be the key man for United this season, as he was at the backend of last season.

Out and about so will try to add to this later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,553 ✭✭✭✭Copper_pipe

ashley young : I reckon ashley will have a big part to play in uniteds title defence. His ability to cross the ball into the box combined with his runs down the flank will cause defenders problems

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,832 ✭✭✭✭Blatter

Robin Van Persie: Without question Arsenal's best and most important player now. Injuries have hampered the Dutchman's career to date, but RVP is looking good to go now after staying relatively injury free over the past 6 months. Handed the captain's armband after Fabregas's departure to Barcelona, Arsenal will depend on Van Persie to continue the great form he has shown since the turn of the year, which saw him bag 18 league goals whilst setting a new Premier League record by scoring in 9 consecutive away matches.

He played a key role in helping Man City to achieve their first every Champions Legaue place with a stunning 15 assists in his first season in England. The dimunitive figure also secured his firt ever trophy in England, winning the FA Cup.

He has been a Spanish international since the age of 20, he was a member of the squads that won both the Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup amking 49 appearances for La Furia Roja scoring 11 times.

First out of the hat for me is none other than Mr Stevie G. Gonna get the obvious out of the way.I am not a Liverpool fan, far from it actually, but quality is quality no matter what the shirt they wear.
    StevenGerrard.jpg

    Years Team Apps (Gls)
    1998–Liverpool 387 (84)
    National team
    2000–England 89 (19)

Wont go into everthing the lad has won so here is some of the more important ones:
    PFA Team of the Year: 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
    Liverpool top goalscorer: 2004–05, 2005–06, 2008–09
UEFA Club Footballer of the Year: 2005
UEFA Champions League Final Man of the Match: 2005
UEFA Team of the Year: 2005, 2006, 2007
    FIFA/FIFPro World XI: 2007, 2008, 2009
    Ballion D'Or 2005 – 3rd
Numerous nominations for Ballion D'Or and WPOTY

Im sure everyone knows what Stevie can do.Here is a highlight of his illustrious career to remind those who might have forgotten.

During a six-minute stretch in the second half of the 2005 Champions League final against A.C. Milan, Liverpool came back from a three-goal deficit to tie the match at 3–3 after extra time, with Gerrard scoring one of the goals. Liverpool's third goal was gained as a penalty from a foul awarded to Liverpool when Gennaro Gattuso fouled Gerrard in Milan's penalty box. Gerrard did not participate in the penalty shootout, which Liverpool won 3–2 as they claimed their first Champions League trophy in twenty years, though he was named the Man of the Match, and later received the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award.

In March 2009 a certain footballer that you may know had this to say about him: "Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he might be."

That player was none other than three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane.

Given the team will be a mix and match bunch it needs a leader. Someone who can read the game, has the respect of those around him and is also a bloody great players. In that regard there's only one man for the job...

    Vincent Kompany

    Vincent-Kompany-celebrate-007.jpg

Still only 25, Kompany was a worthy inclusion in the Premier League Team of the Year last season while also picking up Manchester City's Player of the Year award. The only low for 2010/11 was the fact that Carlos Tevez returned in time to reclaim the armband and lift the FA Cup at Kompany's expense. Vinny deserved that honour but in typical fashion could only speak about the team effort afterwards.

I think he's the perfect player to marshall my backline and provides a solid foundation.

Will post more later, but my first pick is Nemanja Vidic

    nemanja_vidic_1527339c.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭bUILDERtHEbOB

Balls, thought Vidic might slip through.

Anyhow, my first pick is Yaya Toure.

    yaya-toure.jpg

An absolute beast in the midfield who can do almost everything, win tackles, score goals, dribble, pass well and get up and down the park. I'm still undecided whether to play him in a holding role or in box to box mode but he is undoubtedly talented in both positions, and is probably the best central midfielder in the league right now.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,971 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

hmmm was considering Yaya and yes you could call him a Beast but not a Bison!
    harrythornbury.jpg
    2285272447_12.jpg

A midfield General and a leader of men and the first member of my team. He may be injured atm but (he wont be for me) there is no doubting this mans ability so im very happy to make him the first name on my teamsheet.

I just can't say no to a player of this quality. Hes been off form but has shown that he is one of the best players in the world. I give you..

    TorresCelebrateG_468x365.jpg

No one can doubt that Torres is a class player. If he gets back on form which I believe he will, he will torment defences. He has had 3 seasons where he scored 56 goals in 79 games. I just can't leave a player like this out of my squad when other top strikers have all been snapped up. Hes shown signs of return to form and has been unlucky to not have a goal to his name. AVB has shown faith in him over Drogba and Anelka to lead the Chelsea line so I think I'll show faith aswell.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭bamboozling

Thanks NoelJ for nicking my pick right out of my fingers but nevertheless I present to you, Croatia's finest, Luka Modric.

    25042008_luka-modric.jpg
An absolute quality player and Chelsea have been trying the level best to get him this summer with Spurs not willing to give him up. He is the totom that every team needs and with such players few and far between in this league I feel he will prove to be an invaluable asset.

Still only 25 and coming off a great season last season where he was voted Fans player of the year he is the crucial starting point from which I will build my team.

    Nani_run.jpg

Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (known by some as Nani :D) Hated by all but United supporters but his quality is undeniable. Most assists in the Premier League last season and really elevated his game when the going got tough. Still suffers in some games but has the great knack of coming up with a bit of magic even when he's not playing the best and changing the game.

My first pick in the draft is Spurs playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart. He had a fantastic first season in the Premiership and will be key to Spurs hopes this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 958 ✭✭✭eugeneious

Frank Lampard- One of if not the most important players in Chelsea recent success and probably the best goalscoring midfielder to grace the PL. At 33 he still remains an important player for both club and country and has more often then not performed in the big occasions in the premier league and Champions league. P.S i will try upload a picture asap when I get back to my laptop.

    Jack Wilshere

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRLJouo5lhB_PMaDrfhyu4DBATBZW7DK2flwYVU5patFFzfFNm8

Jack Andrew Garry Wilshere is the latest Arsenal Academy graduate to truly break into the first team, become a vital part of it, and even become a starter for the national team while still a teenager. His pedigree at such a young age is undeniable, and that's why I have chosen him.

Cool, calm and collected enough to be a captain already, Wilshere is one of the Premier League's finest central midfielders. He is a box-to-box player capable tackling well and going all the way to the top of the pitch and scoring a screamer. A team player with a fantastic work ethic - Arsenal have a fantastic player in the making, hence why I chose Jack Wilshere.

    Pick 1.

    230px-PepeReina.JPG

    José Manuel "Pepe" Reina.

On his day, one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, and indeed the world, the key to a good team is having a good goalkeeper who can win you points by making great saves when called upon, and Pepe can do just that.

    Pick 2.

    215px-Rio_Ferdinand.jpg

    Rio Ferdinand.

One of the best ball playing defenders in the Premier League when fit, his reading of the game is second to none in the Premier league, fantastic defender and a good addition to anyones team.

    Dirk Kuyt

    255px-DKuyt.JPG

Dirk Kuijt is a forward who plays on the right side for Liverpool and his country, Holland. He is renowned for his work ethic, and is an exceptionally talented finisher and team-worker. Play him on the right, and he'll run about all day, and score or assist and help his defenders too.

Some don't call him World Class but when it comes to work ethic in a forward, there are few in the world who match up to this fantastic player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 958 ✭✭✭eugeneious

thomas-vermaelen.jpg Tomas Vermaelen- By some distance Arsenal's best defender and their most natural leader who was a huge miss when injured last season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,681 ✭✭✭ColeTrain

    ashley_cole-90.jpg

My 2nd pick is Ashley Cole. A controversial figure but there is no denying his talent.

On my phone so will write up later but my pick is Darren Bent

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭bamboozling

LiamO just made my pick very easy. I was torn between Darren Bent and my pick. I now present the Bosnian Diamond, Edin Dzeko.

    Edin-Dzeko-Manchester-Cit-007.jpg

With quality forwards becoming thin on the ground I think now it the time to pull the trigger and get one of the few that are left. I don't want to be depending on the two wildcard rounds to get my quality goalscorer.

Dzeko had a fantastic record in Germany, 66 goals in 111 games is an incredible record and it encouraged City to splash out £27 million on him last January. It took him some time to settle last season but has started this season like a man on a mission and looks determined to show his class.

Standing at 6ft 4, he is tall, elegant and cerebral. He is far from lumbering and has plenty of pace, two equally strong feet and is outstanding in the air. He plays his best stuff up front with another striker yet can also play 4-2-3-1.

He is far from a pure goalscorer, his class brings others into play, allows him to drop deep and move into the wide channels to make space for oncoming players..

    I have my number 9.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭NoelJ

I think there is a severe lack of quality goalkeepers in the premiership now so I give you..

    joe_hart_manchester_goalkeeper.jpg

Hes been a premiership keeper for years and is still only 24. He won last years Barclays Golden Glove and took Shay Givens place as Man City's goalkeeper who is a top 10 keeper. Its great to have a solid keeper in place.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,971 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

My 2nd draft pick cost an initial 15m back in 2008, which is still a record for both a player from his country and to his club for whom he was YPOTY that year. He is still only 23 and has been described by his manager on a few occasions as being "as good as anyone in the league". The massive price tag that would be placed on his head and an injury that kept him out for the 2nd half of last year meant that speculation has increased that there was never more than speculation that may of Europe's top clubs may have been preparing a bid for the midfielder but it hasnt stopped me pairing him with Essien in midfield in what will be a formidable duo no opposing midfield will want to face off against... o and he's got an awesome fro!

my 2nd draft pick = Marouane Fellaini

    efc__1236533765_fellaini-celebrates-400.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭bUILDERtHEbOB

My second pick is Juan Mata. His technique, passing ability and creativity will provide an extra cutting edge in attack. He can play as a left winger but his best position is in an attacking mdfield role, where he can link up the play and create chances. I also think he's great value even at this relatively early stage, easily a potentially world class player.

    Juan-Mata-trained-with-Ch-007.jpg

    Pick number 2: Samir Nasri

With top notch strikers at a premium I've gone for someone who may have slipped under the radar but could also be nabbed pretty soon.

    Tim Cahill

    tim_cahill-celebra_1205450c.jpg

Absolutely love Cahill. Scores goals from deep and is generally just a superb footballer. Fantastic in the air as well so with some decent wingers he will be potent. Averages a goal every four games or better for every one of his Premier League seasons and he would have done even better at a bigger club imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

Theo Walcott more details to come, but suffice to say one of the most talented players in the country. In a good team imagine what he could do!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,313 ✭✭✭AstonMartin

I just noticed it was my turn.

My second pick is Petr Cech.

    Barca_v_Chelsea_Petr_Cech_003.jpg

Having a team that does not concede is just as important as having the forwards to get the end product and the most important man is the one between the sticks and Cech is as good as they come.

Darren Fletcher; When fit and in top form, he would be an invaluable asset to most teams in World football. He is an all rounded central midfielder who can do a bit of everything. He's a good passer of the ball, tough in the tackle, can score goals and above all he always gives 100% and never gives up. One of the better 'box to box' midfielders in the Premiership.

my second pick is Peter Odemwingie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,690 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

My second pick will add a bit of creativity to my midfield - Everton's best midfielder (imo) Mikel Arteta.

    9840.jpg

Consistently a good source of both goals and assists, in a team that has performed averagely for the most part. Happy to pair him with Rooney, I think to two would like playing together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭markc91

    Pick 1.
Shay Given: Been one of the best keepers since the Premiership started playing for Blackburn,Newcastle,Man City and now Aston Villa. He is also Ireland's most capped player. I think he will be solid for Villa this season and thats my reason for picking him.

    Pick 2.
Daniel Agger: A solid centre back for Liverpool and when fit probably their best defender imo...He is a leader and i want him in the spine of my team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,690 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

With Rooney up front, it make me think I should possibly think about pairing him with a player he could work well with. Hmmmmm, who to pick.

Ah, yes. Valencia. I pick Antonio Valencia.

Antonio Valencia is my third pick. One of the top wingers in the premier league. Strong, fast, great crosser, great work ethic.

    Happy out.

Adam Johnson; One of the few high quality wingers left. He can play right or left and be extremely effective on either side. He has great pace, fantastic vision and very good technique. Has all the ability to rack up assists for fun and also has an eye for goal. Perfectly compliments Van Persie IMO.

With nearly 500 games in a professional career that is moving into its 15th season, Patrice Evra provides the experience and work rate required to fill the Left back slot in my team. He also provides a genuine attacking outlet through his blistering pace and delivery in dangerous positions.

I shall leave you with a quote from one of the best full backs in the PL era imo.
"Evra had a tough start to his United career and everyone remembers his debut against City. But the following season you could see him getting better and better all the time and he's developed into one of the best in the business." Former United full-back Denis Irwin admires Evra's growth as an Old Trafford favourite.

    3rd pick is Aaron Lennon.

A great player that can link up defence with attack.

    3rd Pick Florent Malouda

A very worthy addition, a midfielder who makes em and finishes em

    oh yes indeed

There were a number of solid options for a centre half spot but over the past 12 months no young defender has impressed me more than this guy.

    Phil Jones

To be honest I was dosappointed when he signed for that lot but has fitted in perfectly and looks at home at a top level club. Prior to that he was great at Blackburn and someone I always knew had a great future ahead of him.

I think himself and Kompany will make the perfect modern day centre half pairing.

To complete the middle of my midfield I''m going with Lucas.

Good tackler, keeps possession, reads the game well and wins his share of headers, Lucas is the type of player who is good at football.
