Where do you get your programmes!!!!

I am currently in a gym in Sandymount, have been there for nearly 3 years and it suited as went before work at 6.15am. I had a friend a gym manager and I use to meet him at his gym and he would give me a programme, however he is based good bit away and with his new baby, and my three at home I have found it hard to get out to him.

Anyway I asked in current gym about getting a programme, hated the one I got when I first joined, the usual boring run of the mill programme and I got the impression this is what I would get again. They do offer personal training but at €100 for one or €68 of 3, it's not really in my budget.

So where do I get a new programme??? Am bored of current one, which is always a bad thing.

I am thinking of moving gym to Swords, which is where I live, as could go the 4 days I don't work, was originally on 5 when joined Sandymount but hours reduced.

Energie is open from 6am, which suits but any feedback on here, their website does not inspire. What about Migym? I prefer free weights, and sets that use few muscles at once etc

Any help greatly appreciated, baby belly needs to be gotten under control at this stage

    Thanks

    Lacreme

Hi Lacreme, there are a few options available for programming. You can find a generic 'cookie cutter' programme online that suits you, or there are a few books that will help map it out for you such as Alwyn Cosgroves new rules of lifting (male and female versions). The female version of that book seems to get decent reviews. What you'll ideally be looking for is something that's balanced, applicable to your level and meets your goals.

The alternative is that there are several PT's that you can travel too, that will assess your needs and personalise a programme for you, I'm sure you could find one that will charge less than 100e per session too, and several have been recommended here in the past.

    Thanks for that cmyk.

If I got to a personal trainer then I presume they will do a programme that I can then use in the gym, it' sjust I prefer someone to show me what I have to do so I know I am doing it ok, just getting back in to the swing of things.

I will have a check on here and see who is recommended

    Hi,
If you are interested in joining a gym with a good selection of free weights i'd recommend 'Image' in swords or Morton stadium in Santry. Both are very good for the price.
The only downside to 'image' is that if you ask for a programme they will more than likely concentrate on a bodybuilding style one.
In Morton stadium all you need to do is ask any of the members/staff and they will surely help you out.

Glad to hear you put an importance on technique, it's few and far between unfortunately, but yes, that's probably the most important aspect of getting a PT session. Programmes are recommended here and on other forums, unfortunately with no knowledge of the person's form or level, some trainers are good, some bad with this regard, so getting a recommendation is the way to go.

    Good stuff, best of luck.

Tbh most "average" people wouldn't know what to do in Morton. It lacks almost all the stuff you typically see in programs.

CMYK is being modest. He's a very capable and knowledgable PT from out your way.

He's just too nice to try and ram his services down peoples throats like most trainers :)

    Thanks for the tip Hanley

CMYK are you being shy? Are you a personal trainer out my way?

People actually pay for a workout routine?

He did say: "Anyway I asked in current gym about getting a programme, hated the one I got when I first joined, the usual boring run of the mill programme and I got the impression this is what I would get again."

If he goes up to Morton and gets talking to people who know a thing or two about programming/strength and conditioning it might get him more interested in his training which would obviously be great for him.

Nope, not at all, advertising isn't allowed on the forum. Fortunately though...I can however return the favour to Hanley above. I'm based on the Southside, but he is Northside so at least a bit closer and equally capable.

Hahahahahahahaha now that just looks contrived. I'm not looking for anyone yet. I honestly have too much on my plate. Thanks tho :D

Yah but see the thing is, there's a lot of people to talk to there. And everyone has their own way of doing things, and for someone without the experience and knowledge to sort the good from the bad, you could end up even worse off. And that's not to mention people trying to sell services with superlative claims.

I do agree tho, that the people who take responsibility for their own training, or at least play a part in structuring a program with a PT will generally have a greater level of long term success :)

Totally understand cmyk, I do appreciate your input. I have been trying to Search for Personal Trainer and trawl through but if you can point me in right direction that helps

boomtown84, he is actually a she, thanks for the Morton tip, just a little far. Have to get home for breakie duty at 7.15am

Owen S the programme you get in the gym is very basic, and dull so wanted a personal trainer who might push me a bit and show me few different things which I can then use in gym

Some people pay for programme design, some people for coaching, some for motivation, some for nutritional advice, most pay for aspects of all of the above, and a decent trainer ought to offer all of the above.

I think Morton would be a bit daunting to me as no way I would go up to someone there and ask them what they are doing etc

Would prefer one on one initially to show me what I am doing and explain it and then set me loose

ok so Hanley and cmyk are out, anyone any recommendations for PT northside, who will give me programme I can use in gym??

As a general tip when it comes to assessing trainers, I think there's 3 things every client should be taught about and prescribed a program to work on:

    1) Mobility/flexiblity/soft tissue quality - usually good to put as part of a warm up, all those aches and pains, sore shoulders, stiff lower back, achy knees can be helped with a good approach here

    2) Strength training - I use that as an umbrella term for resistance work, most people, especially women don't appreciate it's importance and confuse it with bodybuilding... you won't bulk up and look manly, you will find every day tasks easier ad get that toned look everyone's after

    3) Some form of cardio - be it long slow duration stuff like jogging/cross trainer, short fast stuff like circuit training etc etc...

I think every training program should have those elements included. The structure and emphasis, and time spent on each is down to the individual client's needs.

Unfortunately most I'd recommend would be based on the southside, there is a guy called Robbie Bourke and think he's based out in Glasnevin. I'll try to get some details for you. In fact, I think Hanley knows him too so he might oblige.

Robbie would actually be the perfect bloke to talk to if you can make it to Glasnevin/Drumcondra. Possibly a bit out of the way for you, but you'd only need to make the trip every now and again.

Thanks guys/girls you have been really helpful. Hanley will keep those suggestions in mind.

I really appreciate importance of strength training, as helped me through preganancies and especially afterwards when there is a lot of carrying and lifting, specially with twins. It helped my posture and back as had the strength for this

Not super woman by any means but it definitely helped. Was still doing weights at 38 weeks with my last fella, again nothing massive and part of tailored programme for my massive expanding body.

Now if I could just stop eating ha

Great will contact Robbie and see if he can fit me in

Now on the gym side of it, anyone any feedback on Migym or Energie in Swords

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭cmyk

Just as another option lacreme, there's Barry out in kyuzo gym in glasnevin too, he'd be worth touching base with.

Barry's my BJJ coach and has a lot of strength and conditioning experience thru that and other avenues as well so is definitely a good guy to go and see.

I always say: spend money on a good trainer for one session.
they will test you and give you a proper programme.
at least then you will not be worried about what you are doing.

Strength/ mobility wise, i've basically adhered to everything my brother has programmed over the last couple of years...

Conditioning wise...absolutely no issues there playing for 2 football teams at a high level for the last 5 years!

Energie is open from 6am, which suits but any feedback on here, their website does not inspire. What about Migym? I prefer free weights, and sets that use few muscles at once etc

I was a member in Energie since it was Jackie Skellys, to be honest it didn't change at all, same staff, same way they run the place but different name! The way they sell there instructor programs is as if they're selling free personal training but its not the same at all. i got programs up there and yes its your basic program that suitable for anyone but not particularly me.
I joined Migym in Swords last month and they are only €299 for the full year. you have to pay extra for instructor programs - €9 - I've desided to get a personal trainer since i know what instructor programs are like and i need results fast for my wedding at the end of the year. im still saving money since the membership is nearly €500 cheaper than Energie anyway.
if your looking for a program to suit you they have personal trainers in Migym for €60 for 1 hour or €35 for 30mins. i got my first one last week and i know now why they charge extra for it (because they are much better than instructor programs)
