Rebels Are Entering Tripoli - Is Gadaffi done finally?

Latest news is that Libyan rebels are now driving up and entering into Tripoli.
Gadaffi's soldiers are running away a great deal it appears.

Sky is reporting live and state "they have encountered (so far) no resistance" and is showing lots of Gadaffi soldier uniforms being dumped by the road sides.

    Is Gadaffi's time finally up?

Yeah he's going to have to leave Tripoli for Dublin soon.

Gadaffi's Gaff niteclub to open soon.

Well best not get your hopes up until
he is officially stopped. Or caught depending
    on peoples opinion of him.

The harder part after they take over maybe, is what comes next?
With a power vacume too prolonging, the once united rebels, might break up into their differing smaller factions.
So some sort of unity governing system needs to be established as soon as possible and get up and running.

Hopefully they finally secure victory over Gadaffi as soon as possible and that things improve for the people.

Well oil is all the Western powers are thinking of to be honest, sweetest crude on the planet by all accounts.

How much oil do Syria have?

Gadaffi apparently threatens to kill rebels and NATO bomb the holy hell out of him, Assad wantonly riddles folk left right and centre and Turkey gives them about 10 final warnings.

Seems just a tad suspicious to me.

Twiiter is agog with Gaddafi dead and the inner core arrested chatter

Bonne nouvelle ou intox CONFIRMED: Mu'amar Gaddafi, leader of Libya for 42 years, has been shot DEAD in vicinity of Rixos Hotel in Tripoli.”

Libya is a winnable war (everything that matters is within 30 miles of the coast), Syria is a much tougher nut to crack due to its location, its size and its neighbours.

Ah The Spirit of Comical Ali is alive and well
    2157:

Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim has appeared on state TV, telling viewers: "Our country will be safe, in peace and in tranquillity soon.. These are the moments of the last battle in which we will be victorious God willing and the remnants of these gangs which are acting under Nato's orders will be destroyed."

Don't these people know how silly they sound at times like these?

Well lets see, take zimbabwe, does have any oil fields,no,it does business with china, china does business with Europe/usa,so as far as the usa and rest of them concern,china/Zimbabwe can torture/kill who they like because they have a lot of business with the usa.

if you look back at any conflicts over the years,it was all political gain, nothing to do with watching the little people suffer.

Gaddafi's authority has wilted due to a critically weak defence, heaping pressure on other mad dictators to spend in the transfer window.

Just once, can people like you go back to a student politics forum and leave this thread alone? France and the UK had signed oil contracts with Libya before this war and they lost those contracts when they prevented the massacre of tens of thousands by protecting Benghazi.

OK, what am I failing to understand? that's a genuine question by the way, not being snide.

Geopolitics in every sense of the word. Geography (i.e. Syrias ability to threaten regional security with Israel, Lebanon). The spread of the population of Syria as opposed to Libya's coastline. Diplomacy, Syria's ties with Iran and North Korea for example along with long range missiles. Militarily, Assad's ability to field up to half a million troops....

Gadaffi was isolated. Friendless. With all major population centres on the coast etc etc. Far easier for intervention.

If true, there are international arrest warrants out for him so if he survives the next few days/weeks, we might yet see him eventually in a European court?

Fair point, but doesn't that reflect pretty poorly on the UN / NATO if they let Assad be but whack Gadaffi as it was the easy option?

IMO I think Gadaffi ruffled plenty of feathers when he proposed a single African currency backed by gold, that likely got him to the top of the hit list.

CONFIRMED: Mu'amar #Gaddafi, leader of #Libya for 42 years, has been shot DEAD in vicinity of Rixos Hotel in #Tripoli. #FF
Source is MalikAlAbdeh, Chief Editor of the Syrian pro-democracy satellite channel Barada TV.

    From BBC quoting Al-Jazeera
Al-Jazeera TV is reporting that Col Muammar Gaddafi's personal security team have surrendered and disarmed.
If Gaddafi personal security team have surrendered, it's very possible Gaddafi is now dead...

Possibly, if he has been captured I'd say he'll be lucky to be alive tomorrow.

Ibrahim the PR guy speaking now - another one who will be lucky to see the morning.

Lots of high ranking Gadaffi'ites appear to have gone to the Rixos, basically using journalists as shields.

If I was America I'd send in the Navy Seals to take out Gadaffi now. F*ck waiting, just do it already. They know they want to.

    Sounds so simple doesn't it?

Only if they fail, I'm guessing they dont get an option of "Mission Failed: Do you want to resume from last checkpoint?" which would probably be your highest level of expertise.

I reckon they know what they're doing, leave it to them eh?

It reflects even worse on the people who will take Assad's side giving him virtual immunity for any meaningful intervention.
IMO I think Gadaffi ruffled plenty of feathers when he proposed a single African currency backed by gold, that likely got him to the top of the hit list.

    I thought it was oil?

I can't see how any person with a mildy critical mind would see NATO actions in Libya as having at least some dark motives.

Why isn't NATO backing the Bahrani protestors who were seeking reform from their government and were suppressed?

Why isn't NATO enforcing a no fly zone over Syria and knocking out their tanks and heavy artillery? That would be easily achieved by using the NATO base near the Syrian border.

    http://edition.cnn.com/WORLD/europe/9808/20/turkey.base.strike/turkey.incirlik.jpg

Also if you take a look at foreign oil interests and then look at who's doing the bombing well look for yourself.

    http://japanfocus.org/data/3504_4_ForeignOil.jpg

It will be interesting to see what kind of Libya (oil contracts) emerges after/when the fighting is finished.
