Understanding purpose of ext partition on SD card (root)

    Hi all,
The lack of memory on the Desire finally got the better of me and I rooted yesterday. I put a 1Gb ext4 partition on my SD card anbd flashed cyanogenmod. I have reinstalled all my apps and some extra and now my internal memory is quite low again. I can't move the apps with widgets I use to SD as the widgets do not work then. What is confusing me is I thought that the purpose of the ext partition on the SD card was that the phone would include that in its internal memory allocation. Am I wrong with this? What is the value of having the ext partition and when is it used? At the moment I still seem to only have ~150Mb internal memory in total.

    Thanks

You need to install an app called S2E. Its an EXT management program for CM7.

    Cheers.
What if I want to reflash another ROM. Tempted to go to Insert Coin. Was I wrong I what I thought the purpose of the ext partition was?

There are lots of advantages to ext4 file systems on android. Read here for more info. Speed is the main advantage (research journaling and persistant preallocation).

Some apps don't support moving widgets to SD (and some do). If in doubt, just leave them on the main phone file system.

There's also disadvantages to ext4 (and ext3) on an SD card. Ext3/4 use many more writes to the SD card to get their advantages, which shorten the life of the card. They're also more resource-heavy. On a single-core phone like the Desire, the bottle-neck won't be the file-system

When I had my desire on CM7 I created an EXT3 partition, used DarkTremor to get A2SD+, bought a good 16GB SD card that was Class 4 and then moved the DalvikCache.

This freed up loads of internal space and I never noticed any difference in speed (I'm sure there was a speed difference)

EDIT: should have said, I think the reason the OP still has space issues is that he hasn't moved the DalvikCache. If you don't have a good SD card this will make the phone slower.

    Hi,
No I have not moved DalvikCache. I have a 16G grade 6 card so that should be good enough. How do I move the cache?

    Thanks

Install Drive Watch, it will tell you what space is used in which area, including Apps2SD. Also, note that even with A2SD installed, some things are still stored on your internal memory when you install apps

When I was using DarkTremor there was a command line option to set it up, or else there was a GUI app in the Market. I'm not sure how you will do it on yours but there should be an option.

as the 2nd post said you need to install S2E to utilise the EXT partition as internal memory. I have it running on my phone as the N1 had a pathetic amount. (was fine when it came out as apps where tiny!)

since you have the partition already etc, install app grant root and then tick the boxes for what you want moved over. I have apps and dalvik cache and browser cache on the ext partition.

Runs perfect and widgets run perfectly etc from EXT etc. do not select move to SD card in the applications settings as this moves from ext to main SD partition.

edit: S2E is the gui as above that includes the darktremor process.
