Just wanted to get people's opinions on who is traveling to New Zealand as well as who you feel should go.
    My 2 cents
Forwards- Healy, Court, Ross, Buckley (I rather see Hayes go though), Flannery, Best, Cronin

    DOC, POC, Cullen, Ryan,

O' Brien, Ferris, Wallace, Jennings(should go probably won't), Heaslip, Leamy (he will definitely go, don't think he deserves it though)

Backs- Reddan, O' Leary (don't think he should after playing poorly for about 18 months, but he will), Murray
Sexton, ROG, D'arcy, BOD, Wallace (Mcfadden probably should)

Bowe, Earls, Trimble, Kearney, Jones(if fit), Fitzgerald (by the skin of his teeth).

Reckon Earls is touch and go after todays shocker.

Who I think should go, and who I think will go are increasingly divergent lists of players.

Just heard on RTE there that Geordan Murphy and John Hayes were told a week ago that they're not travelling.

Well, if Jones broke his ankle, Geordan may yet go.

The Geordan Murphy thing is based on a tweet he made a few days ago, the obese lady has opened her vocal chords. I assumed that he hadn't been told that he wasn't going to go but rather that he felt Jones inclusion today meant that he wouldn't go.

Has Boss not come on and made massive impacts for the European champions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,050 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Here's my prediction so I can check it on Monday:

    Healy
    Court
    Buckley
    Ross

    Cronin
    Best
    Flannery

    DOC
    POC
    Cullen
    Ryan

    Leamy
    Ferris
    SOB
    Wallace
    Heaslip

    Reddan
    Boss
    TOL

    Sexton
    ROG

    Wallace,
    D'arcy
    BOD
    McFadden

    Earls
    Bowe
    Trimble

    Kearney
    Fitzgerald

One caveat - if Jones makes it I think it would be McFadden to drop out.

Its about the most conservative selection possible.

Reckon Earls is touch and go after todays shocker.

He's a certainty. Didn't see the game myself but that would have been his first bad game in a good while (playing on the wing).

Kidney had about 27 of his squad picked 3 months ago.

Earls really played a mare of a game, it was like he was forbidden to kick the ball, and he looked poor with ball in hand rather than his usual kick over the top. Maybe he thought his spot at 11 was a certainty for trimble and tired to show he could do strong running game too. Whatever it was he played a woeful game, doesn't help him that Fitzy made 2 lovely breaks when he came on

Agree that Earls had a total shocker today but feel sorry for him, think Kidney has treated him badly, switching his position and showing such favouritism towards Trimble. Trimble should and will do but others should be given equal opportunity to show their ability. Kidney always has his 'pets'.

O'Leary was a joke, would see more ability at schools level. He shouldn't be on the plane, Reddan is infinitely better but again it doesn't seem to matter how awful he is Kidney sticks by him .... same as with Paddy Wallace!

Fitz played really well when he came on for Jones. He's a quality player and seems to have his Mojo back. Tho' I think Schmidt gets more out of him than Kidney.

Could we have a new coach plse?

I know its harsh that he's been moved around but Trimble is not really one of Deccies pets. i'd wager on Trimble being omitted in favour of Bowe and Earls/Fitz, which would be a shame since Trimble has been one of, if not the best player for us in the last 4 games

As i said months ago assuming no injury...Our starting 15 will be

    Healy
    Flannery
    Ross
    DOC
    POC
    SOB
    Wallace
    Heaslip
    Reddan
    Sexton
    Earls
    Darcy
    Drico
    Bowe
    Kearney

the only possible exceptions to this atm are bowe, flannery and reddan. as kidney could go with trimble(depending if bowe is fit or not) , best if flannery isnt fit.. and fecking TOL:mad:.

Murphy has to travel now there are no other FB's

    Healy, Ross, Court, Buckley

    Best, Cronin, Fla

    POC, DOC, Cullen, Ryan

    Heaslip, SOB, Wallace, Ferris, Leamy

    Reddan, TOL, Boss

    Sexton, ROG

    BOD, D'Arcy, Wallace

Bowe, Kearney, Trimble, Fitz, Earls, Murphy

Might be McFadden instead of Murphy but after this year's 6N without a fullback Deccie would be a fool to only travel with Kearney. This is assuming Jones is out.

Talk of Earls not going is quite frankly mental. If you're going on form then Luke Fitz shouldn't be going, he had some shockingly bad games last season. Today he was good, but nothing amazing.
TOL would stay at home. Stringer deserves it more than him. Not just on todays performance either.
A few players really need to sort themselves out. Darce, looking at you.
Great to see flannery back, almost forgot what he's capable of.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 816 ✭✭✭vinny chase

I don't understand the Felix Jones hype. He's a good player, but he hasn't done enough to deserve to be in the reckoning here. Injury or not, Geordan Murphy should be ahead of him.

Despite the nonsense from George Hook, Luke Fitzgerald is a more complete player than Keith Earls, and should be ahead of him. I think both will be selected though.

    My 30 (who I think he'll select):

    Healy
    Ross
    Court
    Buckley
    Best
    Flannery
    Cronin
    O'Callaghan
    O'Connell
    Cullen
    Ryan
    O'Brien
    Wallace
    Jennings
    Ferris
    Heaslip
    Reddan
    Boss
    O'Leary
    Sexton
    O'Gara
    P. Wallace
    Fitzgerald
    Bowe
    Trimble
    McFadden
    O'Driscoll
    d'Arcy
    Kearney
Murphy (assuming Jones can't make it)

Personally, I'd have Stringer in there ahead of O'Leary. Also, don't understand why Jamie Hagan didn't get a chance in the last couple of games to show what he could have brought at tight head. Heaven help us if Tony Buckley has to play in the WC.

I don't agree with the bolded. Yes, Kidney has switched his position, but this has been done at Munster too. Earls has also said in the past that he would like to replace BOD on the latter's retirement, but he's going to have to prove himself in that position to do that, as just because he can do it for Munster doesn't mean he can step up to international there. Kidney putting him at centre could have been his chance to do that, and unfortunately for him, I don't feel he succeeded. As for Trimble being shown favouritism by Kidney, there is no basis for that statement whatsoever. He has played out of his skin on the wing this year to stake a claim for his position and starting spot, having only got a look in through injuries. In contrast, if a player is really favoured by Kidney *cough*TOL*cough* they can come straight back from injury and hold their spot regardless of what standard of game they play.

Fully agree. Trimble has been excellent for Ireland since the England game in the 6N. Thought he deserved his shot earlier in the 6N too. He seems to have gotten a little bit quicker and better on his feet over the past year or so, and has definitely developed a little more of a sidestep. His appetite for work is tremendous, and his ability to make the huge hits is great. His big smash on Chris Ashton in the 6N really laid down a marker in that game. He'll still occasionally struggle in terms of positioning in defence, but he 100% deserves to be on the plane, and probably to start at the moment alongside a hopefully fully fit Tommy Bowe.

if going on form Leamy, Ryan, Ronan, Buckley, TOL would have not had any game time in these warm up games (McAllister, Hagan, Coughlan deserved runs ahead of them). Form seems to mean little to Kidney.

Darcy played his first match yesterday since recovering from a broken arm, i thought he looked better than BOD, but they both need game time.
i think both earls and fitz should go, i think they are both great talents, fitz's form has been patchy since being rushed back from his knee injury, earls form has been ok but i fear he lacks the physicality for top level rugby and spills too much ball in contact. Paddy Wallace should be left at home and Jones showed nothing yesterday prior to his unfortunate injury to nudge him ahead of Murphy.

the one player who has no form to prove himself but has to start for us in WC is Flannery, we look so much a better pack when he's on the pitch.

My 30 man squad (starters vs. Australia in bold)

    Healy
    Court
    Flannery
    Best
    Cronin
    Ross
    Hayes
    POC
    DOC
    Cullen
    MOD
    Jennings
    Wallace
    SOB
    Ferris
    Heaslip
    Reddan
    Boss
    Murray
    Sexton
    O'Gara
    BOD
    Darcy
    McFadden
    Trimble
    Bowe
    Fitzgerald
    Earls
    Kearney
    Murphy (assuming Jones doesn't travel)

TOL should not be on the plane under any circumstances.

Hard on Paddy Wallace but I think McFadden is more versatile and has had a very good season.

Jennings wasn't great yesterday but Leamy offers nothing going forward and struggles to get into the Munster back row. Jennings has had a great season and we need a out and out 7 in NZ.

He's a certainty. Didn't see the game myself but that would have been his first bad game in a good while (playing on the wing).

In fairness, he wasn't exactly great against France in the 1st match.

Earls thinks he's an outside centre, and reckons he can cover FB. He gets switched around in Munster all the time, but mostly its due to him not wanting to be a winger. If he'd stay on the wing and stop constantly stepping back inside when he has the ball, he'd be a much better player.
And Andrew Trimble had never been favourably treated over ANYONE by Declan Kidney. The man fully deserves to start over Earls and Fitzgerald.
