I'm using Hogan Apex Plus irons at the moment. They're a nice club imo but my set is just getting very old at this stage, few chunks taken out of the heads here and there.

Probably willing to spend about €600 and would consider custom fitting.

So just wondering what's out there at the moment, haven't been paying attention at all to what sort of clubs are out there currently.

upto 600 to spend the choice is yours! check out golfstoreeurope.com and onlinegolf.co.uk among others, golfstore europe is great for custom fit stuff. Uve got a choice of about 20 really good sets there dude so goodluck picking ;) Pick a brand then uve got about 3 or 4 sets from that brand to choose from :D Taylormade burners, Ping i15s etc Mizunos, 2 or 3 nice callaway sets too for under 600

Mizuno Mp53s worth a look. Probably come in under budget too.

I've just noticed that on websites like golfstoreeurope as standard they only offer 4 or 5 iron to PW and you have to pay for the extra clubs

I've two Cleveland wedges so could survive there but there's no way I'm buying a set without a 3 iron.

Thanks for the suggestions btw. One of the reasons I'm changing is that the irons I have are not really forgiving enough (imo) for my standard, they feel awful when you don't catch it sweet.

Golfstore europe is one of the cheapest around, they give u all the options, very rare ul see any site selling 3 iron set for same price as 4-pw etc, they all charge a bit extra

    Titleist AP1 custom fit 3-PW for €550 delivered or €420 for 4-pw
    TM Burners custom fit 2.0 €570 3-pw or €438 4-pw
    Ping i15 custom fit €585 3-pw or €520 4-pw

3 beauts for under ur budget, can chose from shafts and grips and shaft length etc etc, wont find any better around dude

Yeah I just didn't really realise that's how they were sold is all, I've bought stuff from golfstoreeurope before and I'm happy to buy from them again.

Reviews of those MP 53s seem very favourable, might try and test them out.

Look a nice iron alright, get good revies, worth hittin a few sets for sure :)

Just seen these Mizunos in mcguirks from 699 down to 499 and 3-PW, worth a tester for ya ;)

I would also recommend a look at the MP 58's. It's probably one of the most forgiving players MB iron out their at the moment. Still a little bit pricey but for the technology with such a traditional feel/look they would be very hard to overlook. Brilliant reviews too.

Callaway Razr X tours are worth a look, have the regular Razr x's. Top quality clubs

I've mentioned this a few times on here but if you're in Dublin then Kinsealy Grange driving range is a great place to try out clubs. They'll have all the latest Mizunos(for example) and with lots of different shaft and setup options. If you want to go the fitting route then foregolf seem to be the best in the business. I have the MP52s about 2 years and love them. They are as forgiving as any iron I've played but give great feedback so you know exactly what you've done but don't get overly punished. There's been so many times I've half topped shots and I'm about to say 'sh*t!' only to see the ball with a decent flight land on the front of a green.

If you are serious about the game i would say go get fitted. For me it has to be foregolf. Others may say different. 50euro gets you a half hour which should get your irons fitted leaving 550 for clubs. 100 euro gets you full fitting of all clubs. My 3 iron was dropped out of the bag by them in favor of a Cleveland hybrid which i love.

I'm just asking because I don't know, but how does an online store custom fit,do you get fitted here and send on the data?? Would a shop in Dublin do that seeing as their not getting your buisness?

I just had a look there, it basically just gives you loads of options on grips, shafts, stiffness, lie, etc. You'd need all this info before ordering.

Wilson FG Tours might be an alternative?

MP-53's would get the nod from me too.Seriously thinking bout them as my next selection.Paying that kind of money though you have to get custom fit somewhere that you can actually see the result.Online isn't really an option in my opinion.best of luck and don't rush into anything.Prices should be coming down as the end of season draws to a close.Haggle like hell :D

I would seriously recommend you try out the taylormade burner 2.0 irons.
They are for mid to high handicappers (approx 8-18)and are a super iron.

On average they are about 10 yards longer then most irons and the forgiveness off a poor shot is very good.

Shafts and club head weight distribution are individually designed for each iron.

these are very popular at the moment and Nevada bobs are about the cheapest ive seen for them....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,426 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Mizuno JPX 800 . (499 euro).

CLASS clubs, same as you off 12 and wanted to upgrade.

Hitting them very far, too far, big adjustment. about 1 club.

Feel great when hit well, forgiving too .

Was a close call as was looking a MP 53 too. But don't play winter golf , so needed something a little bit easier for early season.

    Look unreal in bag.

Mizuno clubs and the classes of MPs are an art form and would need a full thread here.

Anyway , if Mizuno are good enough for Luke Donald they are good enough for me-- :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭danthefan

Thanks for all the suggestions and it seems there are a lot of good irons out there but I think I'll be going with Mizuno, the reviews I've read have all been pretty outstanding. Now to start saving my pennies...

I played with a guy at the weekend who said that he was getting an extra 20 yards on these irons....surely thats a loft issue?

+1 for the Burners. I'm a mid-high handicapper and got these recently. Great set of clubs.

The loft is strong and the shaft length is sometimes longer too.
If you take the MP-53 that people are recommending as an example:

7 iron of Burner 2.0 is 31 degrees with 37" length as against the MP-53 of 34 degrees and 36.75" length.
    The Titleist AP2 7 iron is 35 degrees with a 37" length.

35 degrees is about "standard" for a 7 iron (mine is set to 36 degrees).

Of course the burner 2.0 is going to be 'long' and no wonder 'they' sell 5-PW sets :)

I better check out these Burners too I suppose! I'll hit Kinsealy range at the weekend.

I have the Taylormade Burners from a couple of years ago. Great set of irons. The latest set (2.0) seems to have received good reviews on Golf.com and GolfDigest.com. Worth a try at least!

I find this astonishing....I have the rac lt's and checked out the lofts.....

    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 3 21° 60°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 4 24° 61°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 5 27° 61.5°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 6 31° 62°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 7 35° 62.5°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 8 39° 63°
    Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes 9 43° 63.5°
Taylor Made rac Lt2 Irons Yes PW 47°

the burner 2.0's are exactly the same but a club down.....so 7 iron is 31 degrees....

    thats a complete scam!!!

The Mizuno JPX 800's (pros) have stronger lofts too for those who didn't know.

    Pings are still great IMO.

i15's or save a load and buy a pristine pair of i3's, get them regripped and for less than €250 you'll have some keepers. A classic club with none of the fancy graphics that have crept into club design recently.

I'm off 12 and just got the JPX800.Just played a few rounds but am very happy.I tested the Burner 2.0 and the Cobra S2 and while they were both nice clubs I went for the more traditional look of the Mizuno's.

you're not actually hitting a five iron, I know it says '5' on the sole, but its actually a four iron!

    check the lofts

If it says 5 on the bottom, and he has his distances with them, then whats the difference? If he pulls out his "5" as you call it, and his friend uses his 4 and they both get the same distance who cares? Plenty of diff companies im sure have slightly stronger/weaker lofts, not every 4 or 5 iron is gonna be the same

The new TaylorMade TP MB irons look gorgeous although on the pricey end

also the TaylorMade TP CB irons

Good sign also when you can get a matching 2 iron.

Spot on. It's a "marketing trick" which in my opinion Callaway started a long time ago with Big Bertha irons. I used to play with an old set of blades and try as I might I was always taking one and sometimes two clubs more. However I could hit my 2 iron quite well and noticed that the other guys avoided even their 3 iron. TO confuse me further I was one of the longest with my driver. It took me a while to realise that my lofts were weaker and the length of my clubs were shorter. In effect my 8 iron was quite close to their wedge.......hence the modern need for the extra wedges.

All that has happened is that the 3 and 4 iron have been dropped and now we have to buy extra wedges.

Yes there are times when a particular set works better for one person (mainly due to the shaft flex) but to say that one set is 10 or 20 yards longer than another is just falling into the "bear pit".

Looking to change from my MX-23's to these.(JPX 800's)
Playing off 18 so a bit concerned they may not suit.
Hit a few shots with an 8 iron in AG and loved the look and feel of them, as well as gaining 1-1.5 clubs in length.

Selling for 389 are they worth it? (play probably on average more than once a week).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,732 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

Theres a good few for sale second hand on adverts for less than that I think, seem to come up often enough.

The free fitting in mcguirks and halpenny might be worth it if your really unsure what you want, give you the option to hit a few more irons side by side.

    HI OP
Bought the Mizuno's JPX 825 pro's amazing clubs

    http://www.golfstoreeurope.com/en/Mizuno-JPX-825-Pro-Irons---Custom-Fit/k-4871.aspx

Got them in American Golf in Wilton,
Guy had one of these http://golf.mizunoeurope.com/custom/swing-dna.php and I just hit shots for 10 minutes.
They will match any online price they said. Also completed the set with the MP-T4 wedges.

I can honestly say they are well worth considering

Exactly where I was looking at them. Going off to google other sites for prices thanks for the tip.

Edit to say they are cheaper elsewhere, but can only see the price match offer on their UK site. Does this stand for their irish counterparts?

    Hi Slicemeister,
As far as I know American golf in Wilton is actually owned by American Golf and not a franchise, so deals to be done
I actually found them good to deal with, and they matched a price I found online no probs.
Clubs took about 10 days to arrive but were perfect. Best of luck in your search, but I would seriously recommend those JPX 825 pro's. PM if you have any other questions by all means.

Just a small spanner for you, the 800's are not a forged club, and use a plastic/rubber insert to make up.

they just dont have the same feeling as the older mx23's, there really is a world of difference.

    Definitely go pro!

Not sure I understand the comment about the plastic / rubber for non forged club.
The 800, 825's and EZ all have rubber & plastic in both the cast and the forged versions of the clubs.

    I use the burner 2.0 4 -pw
I agree the lofts are lower that's what taylormade do but I love the clubs,
If the 4 iron is the same as other 3 irons then I hit a 3 iron well who cares,as long as you know your distance for each club

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,574 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

I wouldn't dream of spending anything like the budget the OP has without going for a proper fitting where there are a few options to choose from. You're potentially wasting your money, or not getting anywhere near proper value for the money you spend if you dont

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 284 ✭✭Ciaranra

yea agree I was looking at r11 irons they were over 600 euro, Checked you tube Mark Crossfield and he compared them to 2.0 irons and said no difference, I picked the 2.0 up for 300 in American golf on sale great choice

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Slicemeister

Turns out they're not the club for me at all. Hitting them with a cut, ended up trying out the Callaway X-Hot, TaylorMade LongesteversooperderdoopidyR43sc and some other club(genuinely can't remember).

Really liked them so a tad disappointed. Bought the X hots.
