My stupid friend and her mobile phone contract

    Hey,

Myself and my friend work in the UK (London). She is leaving the job in a few weeks and in the meantime she has taken out a 24-month contract and, of course, gotten a free phone with that.

The thing is, she seems to be stuck in some sort of alternate reality - she thinks she can just go back to Ireland and not pay any...ANY...of the phone off. Now I have tried to tell her that this little act will seriously mess up her credit rating in the UK, but she doesn't seem to give a shiz.

She has let me in on a few further details, which upon hearing I thought to myself "my god, you're actually going to get away with this" but then again, maybe not.

Have any of you ever done this? Come on, be honest:P And do you think she's fecked?

Woohoo first post :) (long time, perverted lurker).

    Mark

That doesn't even make sense, Mr. I'm Trying To Get Loads of Thanks. If I had originally said "London (UK)" then maybe....

Depends on what proof of id she gave when signing up. A 24 month contract is worth £560 based on £20 a month fee. They are not going to let that go easily.

I have all the info of what she did, but I'm not sure whether to post it here.... What you reckon?

credit rating in the UK would only matter there, so if she doesn't intend on going back for more than a few days, then the sad thing is she'll probably get away with it, unless they use a debt collector to pursue her, which, again will have no effect in ireland (according to loads of previous threads on that issue anyway!)

if she did not give them her socail insurance number or home address, she may get away,
as when the letters come to her address in uk, they can be sent back, saying she does not live at address anymore,

Is it just me or is the fact that someone can get away that easily seriously fecked up? I know she's a friend and everything, but I'm disgusted over it (and no, I'm not trying to be on a high horse).

I'm not sure about the social insurance number...as far as I know (from what she has told me at lunch) all she used was her bank card, date of birth, and previous UK addresses (for some reason they didn't ask for her Irish address).

She should have just looted herself a new phone during the riots.

all you need is bank details for direct debit, and a utility bill for current address. you don't need to give an NI number to get a phone.

That's the thing, she didn't need anything BUT a bank card (I am 100% sure of this because she was adamant and apparently that's the norm over here anyway when getting phone etc).

How does the credit rating system work in the UK...what effect will this have on hers here? (I need to know so I can scare her;))

Interesting point you raise. I'm going to mention this at lunch on Monday and see what she says. If she says there's no difference then she's a ****ing idiot.

has she unlocked the phone? if not she's fecked, once the bill goes overdue to the point of being barred so will the phone and she cant use another sim in it, the networks fraud dept will just blacklist it anyway once they see no payments coming in so it'll be useless.

I don't understand why people are thanking this post. That poster has shown she has no sound understanding of the English language if she was unable to grasp what I meant.

Your name might give them some clue, assuming you might be Mark McSavage. There are representatives of mobile networks that operate here.

Facebook search - Friends - Mobile thief's whereabouts in London (UK):)... honest I've never stalked someone in that manner before either. Honest.

The phone was already unlocked, and she only once used the SIM it came with, and quickly put her Orange SIM card into it (and is using it currently). Don't know why they didn't SIM-lock the phone.

What will happen to her when/if she returns to the UK?

anything you have a direct debit/ credit card/ banking with goes towards your credit history and crowds like this collect it all, then sell it to anyone else that may want to check you out before giving you something on credit. so if she has a clean history, she can get the phone in a few minutes. if she has a good few things going and only one bad debt (the mobile phone) then it may not affect her credit score too much in the end.

And by the way, no one has answered the original question; have any of you, or someone you know, done this? (I have a feeling nobody will admit it, so there will be a lot of "my friend" this and "my friend" that stories:pac:)

did she sign up especially to get the free phone, and had intended all along to to use a different network, or was her intention to use the free phones network,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,582 ✭✭✭✭TheZohanS

The phone company will sell the bad debt to a debt collecting agency and they'll pop over on a cheap RyanAir flight to collect the money.

To be honest I haven't got a clue what her intention was. What difference would it make however?

I was thinking that, and rightly so. But they don't have her Irish address. Just a name, date of birth, and London address.

What do you mean 'decent story'. This is not made up, it was done on a re-reg account so that she won't be able to identify me and thus see that I was talking about her!

P.S. are re-reg accounts forbidden? (genuine question)

Since she's hot, are you hoping to blackmail her into duuurty sex or give her protection when the debt collectors call and then insist on duuurty sex afterwards?
