Channell 5 aren't licensed to broadcast in Ireland, that's why they aren't included in the main sky or upc packs.

I think it's great. No arguments in this house over wanting to watch that BB rubbish. Now if only the X-factor would move to channel 5

Channel 5 have not licenced UPC to redistribute their programming - Channel 5 dont need a licence to broadcast in Ireland a la Sky etc

2 - 3 years ago Channel 5 expressed an interest in UPC distribution with an Irish opt out but it came to nothing.

The popularity of Big Brother and the appearance of Jedward have brought the lack of channel 5 on UPC to the fore again.

If Channel 5 where interested in UPC distribution - and considering that UPC badly need programming to replace the lose of 6+ channelsyou would imagine that UPC have at least enquired - then a deal would have been done prior to the comercially successful BB.

Says volumes that after 14 years on air, it takes Big Brother for a significant demand to develop for Channel 5 in this country.

Channel 5 heretofore haven't had much interest in being available here. Maybe a large amount of enquiries regarding Big Brother might change their mind. I'm surprised a deal wasn't done between Endemol and TV3 for it to be broadcast here though.

I watched channel 5 on my I phone last night the app is the number one free app in the charts.

So channel 5 is available in many formats here from iOS apps, streaming, freesat and Sky. You would think they'd work out a way to get carried on UPC.

TBH it's not worth having it's nearly as bad as TV3.

It's not so bad. It's been available on cable in Dungarvan since it launched.

Channel 5 also show live matches from the UEFA Europa League. The package is centralised and Channel 5 shares coverage of the group stages with ITV Sport and ESPN but have first pick of televised games.

Besides the ones you are paying UPC for, there are MANY channels that are also Free to Air that UPC dont carry.

9 out of the Top 10 channels watched by Irish people are Free and dont involve a monthly subscription cost to UPC OR Sky.

I'm in the iTunes Store looking at the 'Top Free iPhone Apps' and it's not in the top 50, a search for 'channel 5' or 'channel five' only throws up a Ukranian channel, what's the (UK) Channel 5 app called in iTunes?

You need a UK Itunes account! I have it and it still doesnt work!
Filmon for £15 a month is rubbish! You get the free english channels and some Israeli/German/Al Jazera rubbish!

Best bet it to download the episode the day after its broadcast from the paradox or use a proxy site to view 5 on demand!

"FilmOn TV" does work here for channel 5 and many others ..... I got it in the top 25 free apps on iPhone with an Irish iTunes account.

The service incurs no monthly charge at the moment and the quality is excellent, no buffeting or messing. It's fantastic.

Also if you're jail broken you can hook you idevice up to you're tv with the help of a few Cydia apps and a cheap cable from eBay. So for a tenner you can watch it on the telly.

The feed lasts for 45 seconds on PC and 2 minutes on iphone then cuts out so you do need a subscription!

What link do you use exactly?
    Do you login?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭patrickmooney

FilmOn supports AirPlay. I'm streaming to AppleTV. It's better than UPC. I can see this being the future. No need for a cable TV subscription.

I'm watching it on you tube, although Channel 5 keep putting copyright blocks on the channels. This guy keeps re-posting the vids though every day: http://www.youtube.com/user/BBUK2011New#g/c/B17EA9E8C9EF9FD1

re. filmon on my iPhone, I can't stream for free I get a minute or two then have to subscribe, so it's not free unfortunately

You do not need Sky to get Channel 5. In fact it is not available on the Sky EPG either and has to be tuned in via Other Channels. If it is just Channel 5 you are after then get a FTA satellite system

Isn't changing cable providers for 1 program a bit extreme, especially considering it's only Big Brother?

Just watch on YouTube. Goes up around 20 mins into the show. Ermmmmmmm from twitter gets the show from UPC in switzerland and uploads. Follow her twitter for links. :-)

I never suggested that they change cable providers . I actually gave a free method for receiving Channel 5 so they could continue with UPC.

Your best (and legal) way of watching Channel 5 in the Republic of Ireland at present is free-to-air satellite (or Freeview if you can pick it up). Can't see appearing on UPC any time soon.

Think its time this thread was closed, not only do we not dig up old threads, but some of the posters seem to be suggesting solutions of dubious legality.
