HP Touchpad

    Hi lads

I'm looking to buy the HP Touchpad 16gb or 32gb not pushed but I have been looking online at different prices and they are about 200euro or more cheaper to get them from the US. My question is is there any difference between the the US version and the UK version. The ones you can buy here in Ireland have a charger with adapters to work worldwide so I prosume this would be the same with all versions or am I wrong? Would that be the only thing that would affect it working here or not?

    Cheers in advance
    Brian

    From today's register...

    http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2011/08/17/hp_touchpads_best_buy/

Basically prices will come down this side of the pond soon too.

I wonder how much the prices will drop by. Even if the 16gb version came down 100 euro that would make it 379 in Harvey Normans which would ba alot better and more affordable

I'd hold off tbh. The HP touchpad is tanking in sales. And the app market for it is sad from the sound of it. With bad sales and no apps there will be not much point in owning it, realistically.

WebOS is struggling big time... Would hold off too or get an alternative tablet.

    and it's dead http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/hp-will-discontinue-operations-for-webos-devices/
"In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward."

If anyone has an address in the states this looks like a great buy. As per below article they are having a firesale and clearing all the stock. I dont see anything happening this side of the pond yet though.

I'd love to get one of these for that price. It'd be a bargain and a half.

16 GB version is down to $99. If anyone catches wind of where those can be had at those prices in EU let us know.

Do you think any seller will do a price match on a lower price?
I read of one guy buying one today at full price expecting them to refund the difference when the price drops.
Do you think anyone in Ireland will offer a price match?

Seems they have a few of them in stock anyway!

I think HP has a golden opportunity here to release the whole of WebOS as open source, especially if they're going to dump all those Tablets at cost price. There are plenty of apps waiting to be compiled if the prerequisites can be ported across e.g. Qt, which HP refused to do.

Email response from HP's Irish distributor:

    Thank you for your enquiry,

As yet we have not received any word on what the reduction will be if any. We have not received any official correspondence from HP on the matter so at present we have no news I’m afraid. The price on TouchPads is that which is displayed on our website daily!

That 5000 won't last long if they reduce 'em to €100!

Blowout deals are starting - one Canadian shop has sold some for CA$99 (€69), though they have no stock at the moment. I'm watching Fry's and other stores.

I went to Harvey Norman in Rathfarnham, but they never stocked them at all. PC World had them at the old price today. The HP store still has the price too. Who's doing the clearance online now? This is frustrating ...

There are 3 other threads open on this with more information on Touchpad pricing and availability.

In a nutshell, Elara won't be deciding on availability until tomorrow morning.

Currys & PC World have very limited stock (see forum) in some stores, but you would need to queue up very early tomorrow or possibly tonight.

I'd say people are buying them at full whack expecting to get a rebate when the price drops.

I got mine and it kicks all kinds of @ss. Quick, good at multitasking. Flash support and 32GB storage for 129.

Being honest, I wouldn't be jumping on to the android train unless we had full functionality and stability. Web OS might be dead but the OS is very good. It just doesn't have any apps!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭fionny

Hoping to get one from Elara tomorrow, Dabs.ie also has over 200 so they will be worth keeping an eye on...

Will be getting on the android train once its stable as I am used to and like android.

HP Shop (eurieka) now shows under 1000 of each, still at the old price. I wonder what's going on there, eh?

And for a couple of hours you could stroll into Harvey Normans in Airside Swords and pick one up.
    That's gas!
Any sign of the price drop in Irish bricks and mortar stores?
    Pc World
    Currys
    etc?

Harvey Norman sold all of their stock within 27 minutes yesterday. I'd say the only hope is finding a small electronics shop the people haven't thought of yet.

It's looking more and more as if us "normal folk", the ones without inside information, are going to miss this offer ... followed by a deluge of TouchPads on eBay at inflated prices. Harvey Norman, Dabs & PC World sold out in minutes. No idea what Misco are going to do, or when. The HP Shop went from 5000 to 1000 overnight, despite showing full price - and now doesn't show any at all. Elara only has about 100 units, and HP employees are getting some - and their website will crash at 6PM sharp.

Its just luck of the draw really. I just got lucky yesterday, there was no inside info.
Tbh if you can't get one today, I'd just wait until the hype dies down and pick one up on adverts/ebay in a couple of weeks.
