I'm 38 and I've been cycling about 10 years. 10 years ago, I could average about 27km/hour on a relatively flat road (I could keep this average for maybe 2 hours. My average speed for solo rides is "fast enough". My average speed for club league races is "not fast enough". The actual figures themselves vary, but the end result is invariably the same.
