Did you just call me fat???? :D

    I am a boy,
    I like bok choi,
    I am scared to fly,
I have conjunctivitis in my right eye....

    Anymore rhymes?

BMI is good for indicating if somebody is underweight, and gives a decent calculation of height in proportion to weight. It's terrible as a tool to estimate body composition and determining obesity. I think my BMI is 26-27, I ain't even mad

It's imperfect, but its not terrible.
True is doesn't account for muscle mass, but the vast majority of people with a BMI of 30 or over are overweight. The exceptions to the rule are so rare that people really need to stop using them to justify others.

Show me 10 random people with a BMI above 30 and I'll show you 9 people who are overweight.

I am not here to tell you if BMI is accurate or not.

    Everyone has their own views...
    Its up to you.
If you feel this calculator would help, then do.
    If not, then don't use.

    Simples

    (notice the rhyming again) :D

    What makes it "Ultra" Robbio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭robbio87

    Hey Thud,

    Great Question...

    ULTRA- Defined as....
a prefix occurring originally in loanwords from Latin, with the basic meaning “on the far side of, beyond.”

    I could have called it:
On The Far Side Of BMI
    or
Beyond BMI (I quite like that one) :D

The reason I chose Ultra BMI is because the app offers more than just a simple BMI Number.

BMI is designed for population studies and is not intended for individual diagnosis. Still it's easy to measure and serves as a good rule of thumb that if you have a high BMI, you should get yourself checked out further to make sure everything is OK.

Also you don't need an applet to measure it. Just weigh yourself and measure your height, then devide your weight by your height squared. (weight/(height^2), all in metric)

The app is a simple tool, for those that do not know the formula off by heart.
Simple as it might be, most people might not know their weight and height in metric.
Thats why the app offers Imperial and Metric measurements.

We don't need a lot of apps thats are available today... But they make things easier for us.

Thats what this app is about, making things easier. :)

OK I missed that the OP is the one who wrote it.

I know I won't be believed but I don't. I literally come on to pass through to the fitness logs occasionally and for some reason the BMI in the title caught my eye. I thought to myself "are fat wannabe powerlifters still trotting out the BMI is bull**** line to excuse their obesity I wonder?"

Some things never change. Or else they change and then quickly change back.

    I'm outta here.

Hmmmm. It depends on how much crap metal they listen to. And also how fat.

    Hey Doug,

    Good question...

You dont need to have network access for it to work,
but if you do have access to the internet then a request is sent for an ad to load up inside the app.

Any other questions then feel free to ask! :D

Glad to see everyone else taking an intrest in their BMI too :)

He also makes money when people use the app.

That said, it does what its supposed to do perfectly. Best of luck with it.
It doesn't work on my phone, but I dion't need an app to tell me the bad news ;)

    hey mellor,

    thanks for the support... :)
I make a very small amount of money on it, every 1000 ads that are shown, then I get $0.30....

not much, but its a start :D

    ?????
Where did I say there was anything wrong with it. Boards.ie survives on ads FFS.
I'm one of the few people on the thread who supported his idea

I know the ad money for apps is shocking. Especially tougher are apps like yours were run time is c.1min, only time for one ad, compared to games that people play for hours, eg angry birds
Try fit one ad at the start upon loading and on at the calculate bmi button press, not much but should help.

    Cheers for the info,

Your right, people only use it for less than a minute at a time. Which is bad for me :(
I have an ad on the calculate screen, and the results screen.
I could add more, but I don't want to clog up the app with ads.
Maybe when the app gets as popular as Angry Birds, then I might get more revenue :D

    Cheers for the support

You should add a feature whereby depending on the BMI number it praises/insults you.

    Apparently I'm not obese anymore.

    Gutted. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭robbio87

    hey hanley,

    I kinda does it already....

If you have a normal BMI it says "Good Job!!" (very motivating)

I don't have any insults in it, but I'd imagine the app telling you that you're Obese or even Morbidly Obese would be shocking and insulting enough!!!

Be careful of online sites, this one comes up in google and gives incorrect results, and not just slightly, 22 instead of 27.3.
