    MEET THE 200MPH SKODA OCTAVIA
Skoda Octavia vRS breaks 200mph barrier at Bonneville Speed Week

Celebrating a decade of the Skoda vRS performance sub-brand, a 500bhp version of the current Octavia and dubbed the vRS Bonneville Special, has cracked the 200mph barrier.

With motoring scribbler Richard Meaden at the wheel, the car recorded a run of 202.15mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah yesterday.

The car itself is a production Octavia vRS, with a few choice aerodynamic modifications, which include making it 80mm lower to the ground. There's also a new sub-frame, which houses a race-prepared intercooler.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine remains, but with a larger Garrett turbo fitted. Generating more than 500bhp, and producing 30+ PSI of boost pressure, the Bonneville Octavia vRS also runs on bespoke high-octane race fuel (with water-methanol mix) rather than unleaded petrol.

The car has also been built to Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) safety regs, which means a reinforced roll cage, parachute, fire extinguishers and window cage.

So they taped up all the ducts, threw in a big turbo, lowered it and ramped up the boost to get it to 200mph. Not that impressed to be honest.

Wouldnt expect you to be impressed.
After all. You were one of the ones that said it is impossible to get 500bhp out of one of them :P:pac:

I'm going with meh too. 500HP + a couple of aero mods = 200MPH for most cars out there.
Curious why they did it with a Skoda in the US though, I've never seen one here.

I could strap a big turbo to my Alfa, tape up the gaps, block the radiator, remove all the excess weight and make it hit a silly speed. Now it would probably blow up after a run or two. Its relatively easy to make a engine to produce large amount of HP for a short while.

And of course you being the technical genius that you think you are I suppose you could leave the gearing as standard :pac:

What a complete waste of time and money.....a 1.9 TDi version would have done 300mph :D

The driver didn't mention anything about it being a VW underneath though....strange they usually do

would it not have been simpler to just convert it to rear engined, and just keep putting engines in the boot till it went the desired speed?

In fairness while Skoda themselves have massively improved as a brand over the years and now produce decent cars, ironically on this forum that makes them a bigger joke than they were beforehand.

the Octavia in general and the VRS in particular seem to take a huge bashing on this forum compared to the Superb for example. Weird. Skoda produce a fairly decent, if not spectacular car and they get hounded for it while some other bland cars like the Yaris for example get nothing but praise.

Either way, nice to see someone trying this with the Octavia, as SouperComputer says, it's not a car you expect to see much of in the US!!

This would have been super impressive if it was a production car. Anyone that said a production Octavia couldnt make/handle 500bhp remains completely correct, if anything this proves how far the car is from achieving it.

    How it should have read:

*Note - this is not a production car.
Things they admit are totally changed from production unit:
    • Lowered with chassis reinforcement.
    • Race spec intercooler replaces small stock 230bhp tops capable model
    • Stock K03 Turbo replaced with 200% larger Garrett 500bhp model (click here to see size difference)
    • Boost increased from approx 10PSI to 30PSI
    • Road Fuel (98octane) replaced with approx 113Octane Methanol race fuel
    • Water/meth inline induction cooling added to further reduce intake and combustion temps

    Things they must have changed:
    • Injectors to fuel 30PSI are likely 5-6times larger than stock/production
    • Wonder if engine Rods/internals changed to survive 30PSI boost (maybe they dont care, one run and finished)
    • Clutch - a near certainty to handle the torque
    • Brakes - massively increased for safety (aside from the parachute that surely isnt on the stock Octavia, even the VRS model)
    • Stripped out interior to fit roll cage.
    • Exhaust, Cats

One could take any performance VAG AWD or BMW RWD and add/increase boost and reach 200mph with less effort and cost than this required. Some of them will do it totally stock. This is IMO undermines the performance claims of the VRS.

Likely the motor was twisting more RPM than it would stock. Depending on how much you rev the balls off it, you might get away with a wheel circumference change. Failing that, change the final.

You need to have a good rethink there.
According to Lightning they only needed a few rolls of Duct tape
    Bigger turbo
    turn up the boost

How did you come to think all this stuff was needed :D

Forgot to add: I would be impressed if they could take Renault Sport on at their own game and make leading 'Ring times on a FWD platform, shaming RWD and AWD prestige alike. A efficient track spec version with more stock components that was made available to buy as a complete car or a dealer approved performance pack.

I dunno getting a skoda to 200mph at Bonneville seems like a fun project. I dunno why people would be so sour about about. I'd prefer to be reading this than most of the crud in the media.

It was a pr stunt by Skoda, they aren't out to stun or amaze everyone with this. Sure everyone knows you can put a bigger turbo on an FWD saloon and it'l go faster! Prob wont last too long though...

We are talking about the same Boards here aren't we? Any yaris mentioned here is followed by predictable posts about how boring the yaris is and how much of a drivers car the octy is! (seriously, is it that good?)

    True.

And i partly get how some may not be overly impressed by this achievement. But 200mph is a significant speed. Remember that aerodynamic drag increases EXPONENTIALLY as your speed increases linearly. So it may be relatively:pac: easy to do, say, 150mph but that last 50mph is going to need serious power AND attention to aerdynamic detail. Remember all the radiators on the veyron? Remember the bit where they removed the wing mirrors to gain a few mph but had to put them back on as they were creating enough downforce to keep the front wheels on the ground? Easy to do 200 mph? I doubt it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

Me arse. 200MPH isnt that big of a deal nowadays. The aero required is rudimentary at best by today's standards if you have 500BHP. Yes I understand aero resistance, put simply its R∝V2. Which is why the VRS can smack 150 in stock form. 200 isnt impressive simply because its not remarkable as an achievement IMO its almost a certainty. As pointed out, its an excercise in PR rather than engineering. I've worked on some pretty rough 198MPH projectiles, not quite 200MPH but they also weren't running on the bonneville salt flats!

    THIS however, is impressive IMO...
