I'm Sitting watching it on the telly now and it doesn't paint the Roma in a good light at all. Some bloke just said and I quote:

"we should put a ban on anymore of them coming into the country" & "We should start deporting the rest".

I have heard (correct me if I'm wrong) that France are thinking of paying them or are already €300 each to leave and not come back. A friend of mine works with a Romanian guy and they seem to disdain them more than we do. Mainly because its a bigger problem in Romania and that everywhere they go they get called Romanian as opposed to ROMA GYPSIES (Yes there is a difference) I mean I see it myself in the morning at the GPO when I'm walking into work. A number of the getting out of 1 or 2 BMW X5's and dispersing in different directions down O'Connell St.

The thing that annoys me is not the begging its the aggressive stance they take, surrounding you and grabbing at you the general intimidation.

What do you think? Should we place a moratorium on any more entering Ireland and/or should we start deporting them?

Romanian gypsies are scum. Through and through.
I have worked with regular romanian people and as the op said, they hate them as much as everyone else.

They should be thrown out. Simple as. Create some BS law or ruling (for face) while in reality just getting them out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭7sr2z3fely84g5

the law is rubbish on this, guards arrest them, state gives them free legal aid and interpretor because they cant speak english all sudden, back out the streets within months.

what bunch of mugs the taxpayers are.

watching it meself. flippin disgusts me honestly. they have such a bad rep (and give so many others a bad rep because of it). it is disgusting to see them hounding people like that.

you used to see the vans dropping a load into my town to beg for the day, but i haven't seen any of this in the last year.

honestly yes deport the lot of them. they don't deserve to be here. catch them begging once and they are out.

there are some honest irish people who cannot help but to beg, also there are honest foreigners getting tarred the same.

    - "people in dublin think if you are begging you are earning 200 euro a day"
    - "no"

wake the f**k up. these are scum. they'd take the eyes out of the back of your head.

I worked with a Romanian woman in Dublin few yrs ago who used to rip 7 shades of sh$t out of any Roma beggars she came across....said they gave her and her country a bad name.Funny thing was,I witnessed it a few times and obviously didnt understand a word but the Roma upped sticks from their begging spot every time without a word whatever she said to them!

That said I live 5 houses from a Roma family.....dreaded it and them but never really see them, house well kept in comparison to some.

Its like as if English people were to refer to Irish travellers living in England as just being Irish instead of making any distinction between Irish and Irish Travellers

Thought the show was pretty crap.

He built them up as being part of some large racket then at the very end told us they weren't.

    Undercover footage was poor.

Don't think anyone leanred anything new from that show.

Did they interview any Irish beggars?

Extra competition might not be the correct term but the Roma make it harder for them too,

Absolutely hate the gypsies! SOme people say that they aren't making that much money but that's simply not true! I see them coming into my job every single morning without fail for 10 euro each worth of food, about 8 or 9 of them. I'm sorry but I work and I sure as hell can't afford to spend a tenner a day on fast food, I can't even spend that on my food shopping for the week!

Aside from that, they are too aggressive in their begging, a bit like the junkies. They don't accept no as an answer and just keep grabbing and sticking their hands out at you, all the while have gold teeth and (while not nice) better quality clothing than I have on. Absolutely hate them. I have no problem with genuine beggars, but the roma gypsies are scum. Nothing less.

Agree. No gardai or politicians interviewed and no real insights or solutions offered.

Here is what should happen. Any foreign beggars should be deported. They do not contribute and we cannot afford to be paying them social welfare.

The gardai need to be more proactive on Irish beggars. Move them on until they get the message. Near me there are 2 beggars who sit outside the local shops every day. I have seen the gardai talk to them and then nothing happens. Why dont they move them on?

They have free bus passes, get the dole and have their homes paid for. They are not in hardship. It is stupid people giving them money daily.

STOP GIVING BEGGARS MONEY and they will go away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,573 ✭✭✭pragmatic1

Dont like people that exploit the good nature of others. They drain any good will people have for beggars. Its a lifestyle for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭EarlERizer

The fact that we've got these parasites here doesnt sicken me as much as how they've been allowed into the country and how they're allowed to behave.

Be careful with these dirty chancing bastards and more so if they have kids with them, their style of aggressive begging is designed to disorientate or distract you when they get close enough to dip your pockets/bags.

and the thing that galls me most, the ones selling Biggie Shoes ....now that really boils my pi$$!

Last time I was in Rome the metro was full of them begging
Roma in Roma, there is pun there somewhere

And yeah it's anecdotal evidence so ignore if you wish but when I was buying a few beer bottles to take to my hotel room in the shop next door they were in there with their huge amounts of change and trying to get notes.
LyndaMcL has seen the same in her shop

Ireland is just getting now what's been going on in Europe for decades. We repeat every mistake they do
    Can we copy Sarkozy?

ireland signed up to free movement in the eu. so that would be like suggesting dublin city council deport culchy beggars to their home county.

probably won't work. there's always gonna be fools who part with some cash to feel good about themselves. only thing that works is intimidation like what happened in belfast. obviously some ethical issues there

I rekon we should make some camps and seperate them into the weak and the strong, we can put the weak into furnaces or gas chambers and we should work the strong ones untill they die.

oh my god how come no ones ever thought of this before :pac:

They always surround old people too and hassle them for money which is disgusting, i've told them to f*ck off before when they were hassling an old man outside the shop I worked in town.

Also they attempted to rob from the shop many times so we decided to just ban them all from coming in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 186 ✭✭Alwayson

There's very few of them in relation to us, and apparently they are starting to leave the country. I would urge anyone they approach to tell them to go home, they're not wanted. We can't afford them, and they have nothing to offer. I would also like to see anyone who give them money getting an on-the-spot fine. None of this will happen of course. Its the incompetence of our authorities that makes me angry and I take this out on the Roma. I saw a young Roma boy beg off a ban garda one day and she just smiled at him instead of giving him a clatter. There is a known leader of organised begging who comes around my local begging at night. I put up with this until one night I saw him intimidating a crippled beggar who had strayed on to his patch. Next time he came up to me I ran him out of it, and told him if he ever comes near me again, it'll be the last time. That has yet to happen, but I will keep running him out of it until he gets the message. Nobody else will do it, not the barstaff or the law. Like I said there's a lot more of us than there are of them.

    Typically Irish you could say,

I'll be lambasted by the Liberal PC brigade for this but fook it I'm sick to death of biting my tongue,I've been saying it for years, the way we opened the floodgates here was only going to lead to problems down the line, our closest neighbours went through it all in the 60's & 70's and look at how it panned out over there over the last few decades. We have learnt sfa or have chose to ignore the warning signs.

If parasitical people are coming here and not making a contribution to society then we shouldnt be footing the bill of prolonging their stay, they should be rounded up and ran into the sea or back to wherever they originated!

You think these Romani gypsies are bad? they're just the tip of the iceberg!

Most of the ones that Sarkozy kicked out of France ended up at Termini train station in Rome (a very dangerous knackery part of Rome). Funny how history repeats itself. Napoleon also kicked the Roma out of France. They were put on ships bound for Britain. The Brits fobbed most of them on good old Ireland. Unfortunately we're all Europeans now and we are honoured to take them. (Thank You Bertie Ahern, and your insistence of passing the Nice Treaty)

Why didn't the reporter ask the two women he interviewed about their SW money?
He didn't ask the big question in that have they the requisite PRSI contribs built up (2yr plus taxed/insured work) and what about the HRC rule? were they getting payment from the CWO? (One of them hinted at that)

Not much of an investigative reporter that fella though he had the undercover voice down to a tee!

I hate to say it but the principal, if not the sole, cause of begging on Irish streets is the people who give money to beggars. That is, generally good-willed sympathetic Irish people who, ironically, do more than any other people in the country to ensure begging continues. If nobody gave money, there would be no beggars on the street.

The Roma and other beggars are only there because people make it worth their while by giving them money. That's the long and the short of it.

such as that he was a hard-working family man who came from poverty and was discriminated against because he was a member of a nomadic ethnic group known as Roma, also called Gypsies, according to the document.

The "enemy" here is the people who give to these people and thus give them an incentive to keep coming back begging for more money.

Yep, plenty of passers-by filmed dropping coins into their cups at the end of that program.

The Irish who arrived ready for work and set about doing it too! and not without the discriminations they endured and little to no rights .....however,while I dont have the statistics to hand I think you will actually find that the Asian communties are the largest minority (there's a contradiction) in the UK followed closely by Jamacian with the Irish somewhere down in the 'other minorities' pool.

    ;)

    http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/meg1202.pdf

    Population
    • The size of the minority ethnic population was 4.5 million in
2001/02 or 7.6 per cent of the total population of the United
Kingdom. Indians were the largest minority group, followed by
Pakistanis, Black Caribbeans, Black Africans, and those of
    Mixed ethnic backgrounds.

Now,there ya go bhoy, lesson learned,do some background reading before making bold statements!
