Better then the rest on Sky anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 958 ✭✭✭eugeneious

I think he's quite good, not afraid to voice his opinion unlike the rest of the Sky gang.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,239 ✭✭✭KittyeeTrix

Sitting here with the hubby (Liverpool fan) and we are both very impressed!
Am actually listening to Neville which was hard to do with Grey as he was just cliche after cliche.....

not as good as Robbie Savage in a punditry sense if that makes sense :o

Impressed so far. Not afraid to voice his opinion and is also honest. Not like your usual crap before with the two previous numptys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

He always put me off as a player. Was expecting to hate him as a pundit.

But he's definitely changing my mind. Doing a good job so far!

Can't wait til he's covering Liverpool though :)

I can't see him being easy to silence.

I have actually been slightly impressed, which suprises me, he seems to talk a lot of sense and as long as he does not start being overly pro utd then he is actually a decent pundit IMO.

He hasn't been tested yet, wait till he has to cover a Liverpool match!

He's ok. Better than most pundits on the UK networks but I suppose thats not saying much.

Richie Saddler on RTE I think is the best.

Brian Kerr is actually quit a good pundit, he's really insightful but his voice is just so bloody boring. Like the boring priest from Father Ted, nobody pays any attention to him.

Pat Dolan is by far the worst. He's just a Giles,Brady & Dunphy wannabe but fails because he dosent have that old wise man aura about him.

Quite simply really. They'll just sack him.

Not bad so far but give him a couple of months and we'll all hate him the sight of him..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

He's an intelligent fella & a good pundit. However the real test will come when he has to criticise Ferguson about something, I don't think he'll be able.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

Nev is doing a good job as a pundit as a few people on here suspected who had seen him do a bit of it before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭wheres me jumpa

Neville was good. But the presentation of the analysis I found very cringey at times. A few pauses and a few glances to each other for direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭UglyBolloxFace

Anyone know where I can see clips of him as a pundit? Nothing on Youtube.

I will probably find it difficult to like the guy but in fairness to him....

How confident were you during your first week in the new job?

Gary Neville the turncoat . Really Impressed with him so far on sky

Cringeworthy interview with Mancini there, unfair to put him in as cohost on MNF. Even Wilkins would be better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,959 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Very good so far. Manages to do the in-depth analysis without coming across as arrogant and irritating as Gray. As said previously, if he avoids the United goggles he'll do well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭-gilly-09-

He's alright at the moment and after a few weeks he'l prob get confidence. he seemed a bit nervous. He's better than some of the other mob. Hope he's made work on a united v liverpool game. Be fairly funny

Wasnt directed at Neville. Directed towards the presenter. He didnt lead the pundits very well which resulted in a few awkward pauses.

God no Wilkins is awful imo

Thought Neville did really well tonight hopefully he keeps it up

He knows his sh1t without a doubt but he has a face Id love ta punch :D

Cannot wait for any ManUtd vs Liverpool/ManCity games, having Nev there will be dynamite television!!!

Hopefully Sky will do the right thing and get that Ian St. John fella in for a pool game against Utd. He cracked me up last season when he was almost crying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,320 ✭✭✭v3ttel

Impressive stuff, talked a lot of sense. By far the best pundit we've seen on Sky.

He seemed a bit nervous, but that's to be expected where all the focus is on him and his opinions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

Thought he did a grand job, he was nervous and I do not think the presenter helped things but I am sure over the season he will continue to get better.

Hated but respected him as a player, will just respect him now as a pundit. He seems to talk a lot of sense, and I reckon he hide any bias. Sure Andy Gray was always biased towards United I thought.

Seeing a good few things on Twitter about him failing at interviewing Mancini though, missed the interview. What happened?!

no way , he was biased to all the london clubs i thought .
martin tyler is a chelsea its so obvious when he does them

Me personally I thought He was quiet good if not a bit nervous talking to Roberto Mancini, He kept putting his hand in and out of his pocket

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

    Impressed with him so far.

Typically I'm just annoyed waiting for the game, or turn off after the final whistle, but hes got some good stuff to say in fairness to him.

And playing at the biggest most succesfull English club in recent times, no dout will be able to provide a great insight into various parts of the game, behind the scenes and backroom goings on that others simply cant.

He did very well. He reminded me a bit of Martin Brundle on his first race as lead commentator and around 10 races in he is great at his job. G-Nev will have a long career on TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭DebDynamite

When he said to Mancini "It's Gary Neville here, bet you never thought I'd ever be interviewing you" and the log pause followed I thought Mancini was going to say "Who?" :pac:

I'd say he's have no bother whatsoever. in fact, I'd say he did it to Ferguson's face many times over the years.

    No. Just NO!

One of the few pundits who seems like he actually watches football when he's not on the clock

I thought he was good enough over the weekend now to be honest. He was a wee bit nervous speaking to Roberto Mancini but nerves are understandable. I think he will prove to be a good pundit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 852 ✭✭✭CrackisWhack

Really surprised with him, I thought he did a good job, loved the fact he pointed out "Franks" dive, he was honest throughout, the pause between Mancini is always there because he has someone translating whats said into his headset.

Yeah he was a bit nervous and shuffling around a bit, but anyone would be trying to remember how to work that computer thing on your first week on he job, much, much better than the rest of the crap sky crew (jamie redknapp etc.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,478 ✭✭✭✭gnfnrhead

I didnt see it but, does he use Andy Gray's toys? I'll have to watch in future to see him trying to figure them out. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

Quite surprised at the lack of hate in here..... but yeah, thought he did pretty well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I thought he did great on Sunday. He knows what he's talking about and gives a good perspective on the game. But I wonder how he'll handle his understandable bias towards Man U when it comes to a United Vs. Liverpool match or the like. I prefer him to Gray no matter what anyway. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

I thought he did quite will, he's not had long to bed himself into the setup and they've put him straight out on MNF. Looked clearly uneasy and nervous but that's to be expected from, what, his third game of the season?

Ed Chamberlain tee'd up the questions pretty well for him.

Mancini missed a glorious opportunity to strike a blow for the blue half tough, that pause was horrible, I was fully sure he was going to say "Who?", think diplomacy won with a "heh heh heh".

Now any chance we can get rid of Alan Smith? Also Martin "Spanish and Portuguese are pretty similar languages aren't they Tyler"!

Dry sense of humour and won't say anything to rock the boat. Basically perfect for sky TV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

I think he will do well. He has already touched on Liverpool and was complimentary of Kenny's rebuilding of the team. He was also quite sympathetic to them regarding the Richardson issue, i.e., he was vehement that a player of Suarez' quality would have been able to get a shot off so Richardson would have walked.

Still, he may see red in a match between MUFC and LFC. We'll see how it goes. :pac:

Neville would make a great Doctor Who. Reminds me of a young Patrick Troughton.

Think that might be an oxymoron in terms of british soccer pundits!
