Hi there. Someone broke into my house the other day and stole my macbook and my canon 7d. As a film student who is about to start college again in a month, you can imagine how pissed off I am.

This may be a long shot but I am going to post the serial number of my laptop here in the hope that someone may come across it.

    serial no: W89227Y27XJ

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

    Jeffrey

    no but
if your phone was stolen the gardas can track and if you had team viewer or log me in installed you could take full controll of the laptop including turn on it web cam

Apple won't be able to do anything.

but they would be able to put it on a list and if anybody ask for support for that serial number and report it to cops

to be honest there not much chance of getting it back so the best thing to do is to make it as hard as possible for them to use it

    They don't do that.

    They don't do that.

indeed apple don't care whether an item is stolen or not. shame cause it would be so easy for them to implement a system via the service providers.

I'm just trying to help getting a replacement machine, regarding files and pics would most folk not have them backed up these days?

Apple weren't too helpful unfortunately. Given my serial to the police and hoping for the best. contacting pawn shops as well. with all the looting in london last week its going to be very difficult to find it online. If I have to get a new laptop I'll definitely install that tracking software.

everything is backed up. It's the money really. No house insurance unfortunately. Starting college in a month and I really need my gear as I'm a film student.

irony is, that even with the tracking software, there is often little you can do with it. The Gardai still won't be able to do anything. I've read a few stories of people going with evidence, pics, internet history, location etc and still unable to get them to retrieve the laptop.

There was a discussion on RTE radio a couple of weeks ago about Smart Water. It contains a code which is unique to individual users.

I was able to find this link just now – http://www.smartwater.com/Personal/FAQs.aspx#FAQ169

It seems that you apply the water to your products and that it is visible through some sort of ultra violet technology. The interviewee said that it is been widely used in the UK where police are able to scan for it.

I could find only the one link so there must be patent restrictions on it. I don't see a price on the site but from memory I think that the cost for a household was €80. There is an annual 'membership' of about the same amount to remain in their database.

They are promoting it here but I wonder how a Guard below in Ballyjohnboy would react when you quote your Smart Water code as a means of identifying your stolen iPhone.

if you have team viewer or log me in ( same thing really , just different products) it will allow you to remotely access your laptop.
so you could turn on a webcam and see who stole your laptop
there are mostly used to access filles or do task that you can only do one that computer

I used to use Timbuctoo to access my office Macs from home – but of course the Mac that you are calling would have to be powered on.

I don't know about Log Me In, but how are you going to get the thief to open Teamviewer for you so that you can connect up to your stolen Mac...?

Pawn shops are full of stolen goods so I doubt that they would be too willing to grass in their suppliers(Theives are often junkies who accept the price of a hit for valuable items). I think best bet would be to wander in for a nose and mention that you want to buy a mac
