Hey people of After Hours with inspiration from the long distance relationship thread I said I would ask you guys-Have you ever been in a relationship with someone that wasn't Irish ?. What were the main differences you noticed between Irish women/men and others while being in a relationship. Did you have to act differently eg because of accents, culture, the way we act around each other as a couple. Was it more romantic and exciting. You guys can elaborate if you wish

I am currently in a relationship with someone that isn't Irish, although we never had to do long distance.

Tbh, the only difference I can really tell is that he has a more rounded view of the world, having grown up in a completely different environment and culture to me and having travelled a lot. A lot of Irish people bitch about how awful Ireland is without really experiencing living anywhere else (I say living because that's a lot different to being somewhere for a few months going on the piss all the time). He knows how to appreciate what he has and what really makes somewhere bad to live.

All the other differences between him and my exes are really only down to personality, as far as I can tell. It's hard to say if those difference would be there if he grew up in Ireland.

Went out with a canadian girl few years back for 8 months. Called it a day when she moved back. Long distance is too hard, did it once before and didn't work out well.

Yup, I am at the moment, and I find there are huge cultural differences at times, and his home town is only a 20 mins flight away in the UK!!!

Yes. Two, in fact. The person I was in the longer relationship with seemed to have a more broader view, culturally and worldly. I learned a lot from her and have since taken it on as a sort of life skill. I meet with a lot of non-Irish people now. I find them a little more open-minded and less cynical about life (obviously not everyone)

Some things that some of my Irish friends ask my European friends I find kind of cringe worthy. I can't give any examples off the top of my head but maybe it's just that at 18 for two years I've lived and hung around Euro folk and new customs etc don't surprise me any more like they do my Irish friends.

I hung out with some French people for a few months and I have to say, I'm put off by them now. It's like all the stereotypes I wanted to not believe came through. Don't get me wrong, they were decent enough people, just hard work. Now, I didn't date them, just hung out as friends but they are worlds apart. Even the Spanish guys we hung out with agreed.

I do have one or two French mates that are perfectly sound, maybe it was just that particular group.

I worked for the EU and have been in about 20 of 25 the member states. So its like a "girl in every port" as the sailors used to say. One difference I noticed between Irish and foreign girls is that big age gaps (10-15 years) are much more acceptable in realtionships abroad (eg girl 30 guy 45) than they are here.

Yes and well it wasn't a good experience though it wouldn't stop me again in the future, went out with a polish guy and though lovely for awhile god dammit so effin possessive (though you could find that in an Irish man who knows!)

Yes. The Irish girls I was going out with were more easy going.
The girls of different nationality used to have a more open minded view on controversial topics, had no problems challenging the mainstream where necessary and did not easily fall back to adopting the opinion that was/is dictated by cultural heritage/the community.
Disclaimer: I'm German myself.
Cultural differences yes, in the beginning obviously, but catching up with Father Ted taught me some good lessons.

My current gf of two years is Hong Kong born, but lived in Ireland since 8 years old. She kinda gets Irish humour (which ended my last relationship with a Malaysian Muslim)(that, and she was crazy), and is a great girl!

Just out of a 3yr term with a latvian girl - No real difference in any way - she has her own personality of course but she would still have that were she from ireland - The cultural differences were there but hard to find - people is people. it ended horribly but i cant say she was anything but normal personality wise!

I don't think I've been in a relationship with someone Irish since I was 14 years old :S I don't know what it is, even when I was living in Ireland, I always had some kind of weird attraction for foreigners (even when they didn't seem 'foreign' at all, it always came out that they were born somewhere else, or their parents were from another country).
