TK Maxx in Cork had a small selection of Scott female cycling shorts at bargain prices again. They were mostly in small size.

My wife bought one of these, which she loves since they offer the comfort of padding without feeling too self-conscious about wearing tight padded cycling shorts. The fit is close nonetheless, and the fabric is a bit stretchy, so it shouldn't be annoying. The shorts look great too, which mean they can be worn by themselves while not cycling. I can't comment yet on comfort, but I hope they will improve things! (My wife is not a regular cyclist, so although she can manage long distances no problem, things become very painful after some mileage.)

They were sold at €26 or €29, and there were other more classic shorts at €19. At that price, they're worth a try.

Can't find a link to it but Aldi have 100% merino wool long sleeve cycling tops for 7.99 down from 15.99

Not everyone's thing I know but for €8 you can't go wrong. And seems top quality too.

In Coolock they had lots of Ladies sizes but only XL left in the mens I think after I took a size L.

Looking for cheep cheep shorts, I was going to get more padded undies but thinking of dipping a toe in the world of lycra.

What would be the pick of the budget stuff?

Altura Airstream (I had an Altura jacket before that was very well made.)
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-airstream-lycra-waist-shorts/
Or these DHB ones, they're the basic and there's the temptation to go for the 'race' or 'pro' ones which are no longer cheep:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-aeron-cycling-short/
Or these Tenn-Outdoors ones are totally cheep:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panel-Professional-Cycling-Shorts-Superior/dp/B00545PJIY/ref=sr_1_2_m?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1376927970&sr=1-2&keywords=Tenn-Outdoors
Or Decathlon via Parcel Motel or something:
    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/cycling-shorts-5-flat-id_8165635.html

Or ebay, there's shedloads on there but so hard to know what's junk? You'd think the Chinese should know a thing or two about cycling gear though...

I haven't tried bib shorts either but I wanted the option to wear them under baggies. Speaking of which is there any point in cycling specific baggy shorts? Similar budget (cheep).

Not cycle specific but think this lightweight hi-viz rain jacket would be alright for on the bike?

    http://www.lidl.ie/cps/rde/xchg/SID-DF623CD6-DD2CBF20/lidl_ri_ie/hs.xsl/index_34165.htm

Can't be bothered spending much on one, I was surprised how little I ever used the one I had before.

A 'boil in the bag' jacket! You'd only put it on if you are caught out in a monsoon!

If you're gonna go lycra, get bib shorts. No waistband digging into you, no cold back, no butt cleavage on show. Cyclists wear these for a reason (can't remember what the reason is though...).

I get what you're saying but... you need to get undressed to pee!
Mind you, I have none of those problems with baggy shorts and padded undies.
Are the lycra shorts particularly prone to those sort of things?

If you have A long enough willie it's not a problem

You have two options, roll up the leg (or not if Genetics were good to you) hold it out and pee. If your a girl it is similar, half squat while stretching the lycra to the side, there was a diagram in another thread.

Or grab the front and stretch it down, possibly bad for the lycra elasticity but it is the way I usually do it. The shorts (sans bib) can cut in a bit unless they are higher than your hip bones, I found they could leave marks and friction if not fitted right in the same scenario.

It can get a bit chilly on some of those autumn & winter rides!

That seems so obvious now. I wouldn't have thought of that because the silicone leg grippers on my current pants would preclude such activity, no way they'd have enough give.

Cork, but afaik the stock is usually pretty uniform between all the stores.

Decathlon ones I find to be great value in general. The 5 range are their midrange (3 and 7 being low/high end respectively - primary difference in chamois quality) and the couple of pairs I have are comfy. Even the 3 range (€8.99 in France) are grand for shortish rides like a commute. Bib shorts are Good Things, especially with autumn breathing down our necks. Tried baggies with a chamois in once and hated them,. Just stick a pair of normal shorts over the padded ones

Nope, been in Carrickmines twice recently and was nothing cycling clothing related that I could see. Don't really have patience for going through all rails but had a fair oul root through.

    +1

That said I nearly lost the will to live after about a minute in that place so went outside and loitered there with all the other blokes

I got some stuff in tk maxx Carrickmines recently, they don't usually have much stock. Afaik bib shorts were on the end of a rack beside wet suits, hope it helps

I bought myself a pair despite only having bought my last pair of shoes in November and having a brand new pair of Diadora Carbon Speedracers 2 sat in the wardrobe. Thought it was too good a bargain. Now I need to buy some kit and a bike to match :o

these will be my first pair of proper cycling shoes. what new pedals etc would anyone recommend that i get?

    thanks

Look Keo or Shimano SPD-SL would be the main ones. Have the Keo ones myself and they are fine. Some say the Shimano cleats last longer though. BTW New pedals come with a pair of cleats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭shaka

Switched from shimano or keo couple of years back and shimano cleats definitely last longer

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Buy Cleat covers, I think they are pretty cheap on Rose bikes, will make your cleats last a helluva last longer.

I've been using a pair of Trivio Keo compatible cleats for ages, cheaper than Look, plus decent grip off the bike, with no stupid rubber bits falling off. They're a much tougher plastic than the Look ones, so last a lot longer.
