Upgrading 06 Octavia brakes.

Afternoon all. I'm remapping the Octy in a few weeks, and will probably upgrade the brakes soon enough afterwards.

Just wondering, can I get away with just changing the disks and calipers? Or will I have to change the hub, master cylinder etc?

    Any advice/ input appreciated.

Been looking into this myself and will prob do pads and braided lines on my vrs. That's the advice I've been given anyway.

vrs has a decent enough setup .Good pads will help, great brakes on my old one

    Cheers.

Mines just a standard diesel Octy, so was thinking of ugrading to vRS/ Gti disks/ pads.

Should possibly post in modified. Would post on vagdrivers, but my two attempts at joining have failed so far.

I've no doubt they're good in the vRS. That's what I'm thinking of putting in. If I can get my hands on some.

To be honest the difference isn't as huge as you'd think over a standard octavia. Proper pads and lines might work out cheaper possibly and give better results.

312mm discs from the vRS would be a nice upgrade, match them with braided steel hoses and good pads and you would have a nice upgrade.

Or you could fit R32 front discs/pads/calipers, they are huge so would probably need bigger wheels to clear them.

    Thanks again man.

What pads would you recommend? Only ever used OE pads to be honest.

Research is throwing up a few ideas: Mintex, Endless, Yellowstuff.

Well it's endless I'm going to get pretty soon

17"s on it for a few months now, so will probably get away with the vRS disks.

Really?I've never drove a regular octavia, would of expected to be a big difference

Nothing too major to be honest. I'd assume with a lot of hard use they would last a lot better but day to day driving there's very little difference at all.

Are you gonna do braided front and rear? Or just the front? Gonna do it yourself, or get someone to do it?

    Apologies for all the questions.

And it's mainly just day to day driving for me. Remapping for a bit of extra power. Would love a vRS, but economic circumstances don't allow. Have a wedding to pay for, and if I changed the car before that happens, I reckon the weddings off

    Come to think of it.......

Where is it you're getting it remapped?what's the power gains?

dont forget that what you (or any normal person) call an upgrade your insurance co will call modified.so you should decare it so they can hike their premiums accordingly.

Having done a fair bit of research, gonna go to Joe Power at chippedire.com.
Their website says bhp from 105- 135, and torque up to 310nM. But speaking to him on the phone he said he could bring it up to 145bhp, and I think he said 340nM of torque, without having to change engine mounts, half shafts, clutch/ DMF, turbo etc.

    Already done so.

Rang the brokers, and they checked it out. Currently with AXA. At first, they said no problem. But then changed their mind.

Brokers then said that Zurich would do it no problem, as long as the power didn't go over 150bhp, without it effecting my premium.

True. Bit then I'd be denied getting the sex. And I'm quite fond of the sex.

@ EPM what sort of money would endless pads and disks cost. I was thinking of changing them on the Passat and getting it remapped to 590 bhp..

i think the vrs had 312mm disks which will fit under 17s no problems. if you are lucky you might just need new caliper carriers and pads & disks.
also a decent set of tyres and standard brakes will be be as good as upgraded brakes and **** tyres

We're doing the work on EPM's car, I work in the same place as Joe Power, we share a building. When doing braided lines it makes no sense to just do the fronts, to get the benefit you'll have to do all four, they come in a set anyway. Braided lines, good pads and OEM discs will do you fine I'd say, if when you're having it mapped you want a spin in a car with that kind of setup I'll organise that for you

Nice one Gary, I'd really appreciate that.

Was driving home from Galway, and noticed a hum from n/s rear. Methinks the bearing's gone, so I'll be getting that done first.

I'm planning on getting the map done bout mid September, but haven't made an appointment with Joe yet. Have to wait and see about getting time off work. Was supposed to be off now, but long boring story attached as to why not.

I'm guessing you guys are the Endless agents?

Any chance you could pm me a rough estimate for cost of installing braided lines and pads all round?

Few guys over on the Briskoda forum after converting to Bigger brakes ( R23 / Porsche ) etc.

I would guess that their original vRS setups would be for sale?

    Might be worth a try.
One guy over there has the vrs discs and calipers with ( I think ) Mintex pads and does track days, He finds them excellent.

Have them on my own, and the difference over halogens is simple ridiculous!!

Had a quick look at that link, but I reckon courrier cost would be prohibitive. My company ships to the U.K. and we get charged €25 per 5kg.

I got my kit just after Christmas last year, and the difference is like night and day.

Plus the Octy has projectors, so no problem with blinding on- coming traffic, once they'd been aligned.

Might be a bit of a pig to fit into the Passat, if my memories of replacing bulbs on my auld man's 05 Passat is anything to go by.

To give an example of what they are like. My heads are more like fog lights compared to them. I rarely use heads now.

    They should fit the passat.
    Are they projectors?

Yeah I wouldn't do it without the projectors, you'll just blind everybody else on the road. If you have projectors then you'd be mad not to do it, in fact I think Limerick Man from here was selling them for a while so he might be worth dropping a PM to
