What is the AH opinion of beards?

Coming on from the "turn offs" thread, I noticed that some people have a dislike for beards.

Beards are what make a man, a man. Be it stubble and patchy or a full on Kenny Rogers tribute, they are what encompass wisdom (and nerdy-ness I suppose)

Judging by the KYN thread, I assume that a lot of AH is composed of beard enthusiasts, like myself. I've even noticed the odd woman, with a touch of "Gandalf" to her.

    So, boards-beards....

    beards make the man.
if you cant grow a beard, you are not a man!!!!

sorry to those poor 'non-females' that cant grow one.

I love my beard, it provides warmth and wind shielding for my strong manly jaw during the winter.

I feel sorry for men who cannot grow a beard, and my pity for a woman who prefers their men to look like fresh faced boys is never ending.

    Embrace the beard.

I hate shaving. My problem is that I never last beyond the irritating itchy phase. I've been told to just get through this and it's plain sailing.

I like a short beard- definitely like a bit of stubble. Think longer beards are ok on older men, like 50+. But really long beards, whilst rather comedic, are mostly pretty gross.

Moustaches.... I do NOT get these... *shudder*

Technically it does. Beards are a male secondary sexual characteristic. Pre pubescent boys and women don't have them, adult men do(though density depends on racial/population background, Europeans/Middle easterners and folks from the sub continent being the hairiest). Its odd that men choose to shave them off. You'll note that representations of powerful men through history tend to have many more beards than not. Goes double for wise/intellectuals/religious figures. God is rarely shown clean shaven.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Of course it does...to consider a man so broken as to willingly shave his facial hair, bending his knee to will of society and the whim of women.

He is no man at all, merely a boy afraid to embrace his true nature.

    My opinion on beards?
Dwarfs need them, it's a requirement to be a dwarf.

Currently growing mine back. Will see how it goes. Winter is a better time for it, I seem to get less ginger. :)

ok as a person that is attracted to men, I often find the clean shaven look attractive, but also do like stubble, I just hate the look of beards.

I like having a beard, they're great for covering up a dull unattractive surface.

Went out with a guy who had a beard, twas hard watching him eating, all the food getting trapped in it was yuck, he kept stroking it like a pet...said it helped him think.........still something sexy about a man with a beard.

Beards can hide a soft jawline and so make the softer faced guy look a little less so, but there's nothing wrong with clean shaven if you're not soft jawed. I shaved in June for the first time in a good few years just because I was sick of the heat while exercising but I'm not sure the aesthetic change has been for the better. I did like the beard.

I don't mind the look of beards/stubble, infact they suit most I've seen them on, but I have incredibly soft and sensitive skin and even a whiff of stubble leaves me red faced after a snogging session so no beardy blokes for me.

Beards are just a lodging place for fleas. Shave them off.:)

I've been told my beard makes me look "less evil". I've been told that my beard makes me look "more evil". Thus, stuck between these two possibilities, I stand confused.

This is my beard. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My beard is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my beard is useless. Without my beard, I am useless. Before God I swear this creed: my beard and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

I refer to it as my winter coat.

I have a beard!....I think its great and convenient!

I was however horrified to find some ginger hairs in it the first time I grew it.......I snip them and the occasional grey out religiously now.....still more convenient than shaving.

+ I do a great "This is Sparta!"

+ It is getting a bit ZZ Top now though...anyone know a good barber in Dublin that can make it faux trendy again after 4 months of continuous growth?

Beards are fine. No beards are fine.
It's the wankery of shaping your facial hair, especially goatees, that are not fine.

I really like bearded men.. I think they can make men look more attractive but i often wonder are the beards there to hide the ugliness.

I strongly agree with this. There are only two types of legitimate beards. The full neatly kept beard for the discerning gentleman and the unfettered, uninhibited facial wilderness that adorns the mandible of those who long for the woods.
