No. They are now on the new road which was built for the proposed industrial estate. 3 garda cars paid them a visit a half hour ago.

Was afraid that would happen, was walking by there yesterday and noticed that the gates had no locks on them and the concrete pillars they left to block the entrance could be moved very easily.

They were at the wasteland next to Jackie Skellys yesterday. English regs. They'll move on. Leave a mess, but move on.

Was wondering why there was so much Garda attention up there this afternoon. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Just saw another two caravans arriving, they mounted the cyclepath and got in that way,the gate on the left is open,it looks like they did not have much success earlier, you could fit hundreds of caravans in there so I hope they get a handle on this soon.

Have just spoken to the Gards they have contacted the management company of the site to secure the site again and they hope to get them moved on tomorrow,as he said himself the problem is moving them on and they are waiting for the Inspector to make a call on what to do.Fingers crossed.

Did you walk down and look? They cant be seen from the road, its the IDA site were they put the new roads recently.

They can be seen parked up on the new road from the golf course carpark.
Gardai should be able to move them on soon as they are on privately owned land.

    Hi All,

We have some new neighbours in the area where new development started couple of months ago. The gates were broken yesterday and at least 5 caravans and 3 Vans moved in.

They are on the left side driving from town towards The Fairways Charlesland, kind of hidden beside the hill.

Can anyone who is also concerned about this please contact Property Management and Garda!!!!

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭cuddlycavies

It's covered on the ''new arrivals'' thread. The Garda are well aware of them and are in a position where they have to act within the law. Dont keep ringing them, they have work to do.
People like this are allowed to break the law as we know with no consequence. The English regs would suggest that our tolerant neighbours will be treated to them shortly and we can bid them good riddance.

Several of the vans stopping at Chalesland are Northern Registered. Two I saw had YLZ registrations, a Black Ford transit and a White VW. These vans and their occupants did a blitz near where I live offering Power washing on driveways etc yesterday afternoon. There must have been a dozen men doing house calls. Please don't encourage these fly-by-nights.
I was in Charlesland Shopping centre yesterday and noticed up to 8 urchins hanging around, not Charlesland residents but visitors from the illegal "halting site". We must all be vigilant and have these unwelcome visitors moved on.

Five vans & caravans pulled out of industrial park at 17.30 today (Sunday) heading south - leaving about another 5 at the bottom of the estate. People of Wexford - lock up your daughters!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 kayman78

Ah I see. I didn't actually walk down the road on Saturday morning so that explains why I didn't see them. I just saw that the gates were closed with a wire wrapped around them. The concrete barriers are still there - obviously not very effective if they can just drive up on the footpath I assume to get in and out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,936 ✭✭✭LEIN

I seen a truck with a heavy lifter on it rearranging the concrete barriers.

Just drove by around 20mins ago and saw three vans with caravans trying to get onto the new section of road. Called Greystones Garda Station and was told they could do nothing as the IDA had given them permission to enter their land. :mad:What are the IDA playing at?

    why?

also, gating an estate of 1000+ houses? not much point really, they'd be open more often than they'd be closed.

IDA came in for criticism over recent years for hogging the site and not coming up with any industrial development/ jobs.
Maybe now they have a handy excuse for inactivity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭lakeroad

Between 10 & 15 vans and caravans there now. What are the IDA playing at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭zanador

I might be missing something but has there been a sudden spike in crime? More litter around than usual? Threatening behaviour?

I know it's hard but really, in the same way the single mothers did NOT cause the riots in England, we shouldn't tar all travelling people with the same brush and assume problems before they arise.

Folks, it is so simple to get our visitors to leave, I have seen it done before (most recently in the car park owned by the Byrnes behind the pet shop in Greystones)

You simply lock/block them in during the night/early morning when they are all parked.

You then hang about till Tom the traveller appears and says "hey boss, you've blocked my vans in, you must let me out". You, council/cops/whoever says "well certainly, but this is a one way ticket. You're coming out to stay out so hook up your caravans or else you're all staying where you are".

So darn simple. Can't understand why it hasn't been done by the council. All they need is a digger and some more boulders plus a decent police presence.

I can't believe that IDA gave the "visitors" permission to occupy their land. Where did you get this information from?. Did Garda ask IDA if they would allow "visitors" to camp?
Passed by last evening and noticed heavy blocks had been moved, Left hand gate open and down in the cul-de-sac the "visitors" were still on site. If gates were closed and blocks moved who removed them and opened gate? Looks like the "visitors" themselves did the moving.
What will we have next, 100's of wagons with their occupants. When they eventually leave we will be left with the rubbish and desecration they leave behind.

I cannot believe that the IDA actually said or agreed to this. Has this come from a credible source?

Was in Superquinn on Saturday night and there was a young lad in the queue in front of me - quite obviously not from around here - and looked about 14. When it came to his turn, he requested a bottle of vodka. The lad at the till took his ID and went to that friendly manager chap who came back telling him to get lost. His ID had a DOB for 94, but he couldn't understand how that didn't make him 18?!?! When I came out of the shop he started hassling me to get him some vodka. After being rejected by me and the chap behind me, he hopped into this NI reg white van and sped off. How he's even legal to drive that I don't know! It all seemed odd at the time, but after learning of our new visitors, things are falling into place.

While I understand your post, underagers buying drink and 17 year olds driving aren't something specific to travellers and if you walk around during the weekend evenings, you'll find some local 17 year olds looking for the same thing. That being said, in my experience, the majority of travellers I've encountered have been rude, violent and thieving. Then again, I've seen some that are are nicer than some settled folk. Realistically, I do feel a little less safe if going for a walk around the town now, particularly at night.

Hey Vinpaul, As my post said I spoke to a Garda in Greystones Garda Station and he said they had been told that the IDA had given the Visitors permission to access the site. Don't be making stupid comments like "Where did you get this information from?" its all in the post if you read it properly!

I totally agree, I still can't believe that the IDA would give permission but this is what I was told when I called the Station last night. They could do nothing about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 847 ✭✭✭wicklowdub

Just say wicklow coco water unit up at the site, not sure whether they were turning water on or off but a unmarked garda car went into the site before them. I find it hard to believe the IDA would allow them to errect a temp halting site, is there any precedence anywhere else in ireland. Cant think Charlesland GC would be over joyed either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭Quackhart

Just off the phone to the GCC and they are not aware of any water truck out at that site. They advised that as it is an IDA managed site any concerns / questions / queries should be directed at them.

I also contacted the Mgt company for the Park and they were unaware of any situation developing either.

I phoned the IDA this morning to see what the story is. The man responsible for our area was out, but he has just phoned back to say that they are aware of the situation and are in the process of taking out an eviction notice. He says they are aiming to move people on in the next few days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭tennisplayer

I hope they don't move back to Jackie Skelly's area if the IDA court order is served.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 309 ✭✭Manny7

Millers02 beat me to it, but I was in touch with the IDA as well - the visitors definitely don't have permission to be there, and following discussions with them the understanding was that they would move on today. As they're still there, steps are being taken to evict them, after which more blocks will be put in place to seal off the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 363 ✭✭vinpaul

Glad to hear that IDA did not give permission for them to park on their lands. I hope getting eviction order doesn't drag on as they sometimes do.
Now that the harbour area is approaching the finishing stages, I hope we won' t see "visitors" parking up there. Remember, some years ago a large contingent of travellers from the UK arrived and spent some days opposite the Beach House. WCC must be vigilant and keep all unwelcome visitors at a distance.

They've been coming every year around about this time for years. Calm down everyone....they'll move on shortly regardless.

Pretty pathetic effort to waste so much of our money "developing" a site with no demand or tenants identified in advance, during a recession... Typical of the type of "thinking" at the so called management level of state and semi-state bodies. Though you can be sure the pressure to "look like you are doing something" came from government.

Travellers are the only demand for this "development"...development being one of the great oxymorons of the last decades.

The works there provided jobs for people over a number of months and we now have the infrastructure in place for new businesses to come into Greystones... hardly a waste of time

an illegal halting site is hardly going to attract any business! :)
