    should these calculations be based off bodyweight or lean mass? I feel like lean mass would make more sense but im not sure

    It depends on the formula used afaik.

    I know where you are coming from at a given bodyweight, the perosn with the higher lean mass would have the higher BMR/RMR. But the collary to that is that, for a given lean mass, the person carrying the higher fat mass burns more energy when moving about (while not directly related to BMR its, going to affect total calories)

    Quite simply, forget about it. It's only going to be an issue for those at very high or very low body fat.
    The formulas are jsut a guide, if you really want to know your RMR, then get it tested. It doesn't take long.

    this may seem like a dumb question to you but where would i get my rmr tested?

    Probably one of the university science departments.

    Failing that the average of your BMR based off lean mass and total mass is probably a grand approximation.

    Some nutritionists also do it, I only know this as a friend of mine is getting tested tomorrow as part of her initial visit

    I wouldnt trust much of the equations out there if you wanted a true BMR, purely because I have had mine worked out in lab setting using the various equipment needed, then out of curiosity I compared it to some of the equations available and found them to be somewhat different. Having said that the equations supposedly work out somewhat accurately for the majority.

    AFAIK, UCC, DCU, Carlow IT, UCD, DKIT, Trinity all have facilities to test this. Other places may also have the facilities needed, I am just unaware of them.

    The differences are going to be pretty small. Whats the difference between actual BMR and estimated for you?

    I don't really see how it needs to be super accurate anyway.
    The activity based energy consumption is estimated, as is the calorie intake. So the useful ness of a accurate start point is lost as at this stage.

    Add to this that when bulking, we are overeating, and when cutting undereating, the accuracy is even less important. Maintenance will balance out over time.

    BW in kg x 33-35 does a good enough of job of estimating imo (33 - 35 varies depending on excercise levels averaged over the week)
