Cheap + good gym near UCD

    Hi all,

I will be studying @ UCD this fall and so far, it seems like gyms are really expensive. What's the best option for a student hoping to save money and workout somewhere near UCD?

Depends what you're looking for in a gym.

If it's good lifting equipment and a good atmosphere for not much cash, Ironside in Blackrock is your best bet.

If it's a pool and lots of cardio machines, I dunno!!

There is a Crunch gym on the campus of UCD, which isn't that expensive - I've never been a member, just looked in it, and it looks ok - the weights room looks small and claustraphobic but the rest of it is nice.

It's going to close eventually once the new student centre is open (which will contain a gym and allegedly a pool) so you can't buy a full year's membership as far as I know, just up until when they will close (which I don't think will be at least until early to mid 2012)

Also there are exercise classes downstairs in the halls of the UCD Sports Center which are fairly cheap per class. Something like €3, for students. If that's your sort of thing. Don't quote me on that price although it's not far off it.

    I care about weights/squat racks..basically good lifting equipment. Don't care about pools,saunas,etc.

I liked the looks of it- seemed pretty legit. Just didn't like the joining fee of 100 euros.

I think it's waived if you get an annual membership?

ironside is a 20+ minute cycle from UCD, its a great gym but honestly not worth the travel over crunch, even if crunch is a sh ithole

    What would you recommend then?

If you are only in Dublin for three months we would be able to waive the joining fee. The purpose of it is to discourage people joining for a month taking advantage of programming and just leaving because we dont have a contract. I would say pm me and I can put your name down for a free guest session if you are interested.

I would disagree with this. It is 3km from ucd to ironside (according to AA route planner) This should take the average person less than 10min to cycle about 5 mins in a car.

What is parking like out there davey?

Free parking on Carysfort avenue around the corner but parking right outside the door is free after 7 and all weekend. Its a relatively quiet area so finding parking has never been an issue for any of our members fortunately enough! :D

Simply Fitness - link given above - offers no contract membership - there is a joining fee and then pay monthly - it is an excellent little gym
