Spurs say their game is still on.

Why did you start your post with "games postponed" as if it was fact?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭dr ro

yeah bit odd that. Looks like a statement.

not a hope will games go ahead if things continue as they are.

If I was in London I would not the hell go anywhere near a football stadia with moronic zombies out on the rampage.

There are games postponed, West Hams carling cup game is off, and decisions on Reading, Crystal Palace and Charlton will be made tomorrow morning. If it continues the London games at the weekend will be under threat for obvious reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,369 ✭✭✭UnitedIrishman

Nothing to do with 'moronic zombies' and more to do with the fact that with the police forces stretched to the balls it'd be pretty pathetic and immoral to go to the Met and say "but ye are still ok to drop by for the game the weekend".

Well if Chelsea can get a top of the table clash called off due to snow thats not even there, a riot is more than adequate excuse.:pac:

Maybe because there actually are some games postponed :p

West Ham v Aldershot, and another game tomorrow night has been postponed.

I cant see why they wont send in water cannons to disperse crowds, I know they cite the reason as there are spectators etc but surely the whole idea is to disperse the lot of them. Police are too stretched? Send in the army, even without guns, they surely have the correct training to deal with exactly this type of situation.

They have none , plus they are not licenced to use them in mainland britain . They just saud that on sky 2 secs ago :)

Closest water cannon is Belfast. They don't have any over there.

England game should be called off now on Wednesday but cant see the FA doing that

There are legal issues in using water cannons. UK only ever used them in the north and would need to pass emergency laws to use them in Britain, and also they mightn't actually have any.

I really don't think armies are trained in riot control, that is definitely a police matter.

If all this rioting keeps up, which is possible, we can expect disruptions to premiership at weekend.

No way can I see Eng v Holland going ahead.

If the police say the game is to be called off then there is Sweet FA the FA can do about it.

It is not the FA's decision, it is up to the Police force, the MET and if riots continue tomorrow night the game will be cancelled. Game could even be cancelled sooner as police force have asked all London clubs to cancel their games tomorrow night

Could they change the venue for the England game possibly?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

They'll cancel the game with any luck, stupid time to have it anyway

    Breaking News Sky News

Police order all London clubs to call off games as riots spread.

Dont know if thats just Carling Cup or what

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,633 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Not at this stage. They'd have to go outside area of met police.

Would be a logistical nightmare for teams regarding hotels. Sponsors and corporates.

Also what about 90,000 tickets holders who all won't fit in another stadium never mind maybe not being able to go to another city.

Do some people just have an argumentative streak??? - there are games postponed - it was a statement. If he said ALL games postponed then you would have a point, but he didnt - so you dont.

Hearing there is violence in Birmingham now?? It's a bit of a joke they don't have it under control by now.

    Why?

Do you realise how difficult this is, especially as there are more people spread over a large distance than police?

I'm probably being totally naive here but surely it's just a matter of police presence?? It comes across on TV that the police are very disorganised.

It's a pointless game - cancel it. The police don't need another headache and the possibility of large crowds of people congregating before and after the game. Plus the fact that I'm sure the MET have pretty much all their force on duty right now, so I doubt they're going to work 24-26 hours straight through dealing with the riots tonight and then the match.

Well it appears that rioters are just spring up all over the place and seem pretty organised.
London is also a big place so I think it's just very hard to control.

I'm wondering if this will start spreading to other English cities.

    Just read this tweet:

Rumours from people sending me @ messages that the Smithdown area of Liverpool is getting ready to kick off.

Lol read thefirst paragraph of this

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/sep/15/theresa-may-cut-police-budget-without-violent-unrest

The home secretary, Theresa May, has dismissed fears that deep spending cuts could undermine the ability of the police to tackle possible civil unrest, and insisted the British did not respond to austerity by rioting on the streets.

Just seen that as well. This is madness. Haven't seen anything from the news over the last few days, come back home today and see all this, its crazy.

Hopefully they can get hold of the situation and this weekends football won't suffer, as well as the damage and looting stopping of course.

It appears violence has broken out in Liverpool.

    EDIT: confirmed on Sky.

Don't doubt it will spread to Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, etc. soon. Hope I'm wrong though.

    Following on AH, few quotes.
0045: West Midlands Police confirm that a police station in Holyhead Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, is on fire.

Well, this is going well. Should have broken out the live rounds much earlier in the day.
Not looking good at all for the PL games.
All football cancelled tomorrow because of the riots...except Millwall and Leeds who have declared it "Ladies Day."

It really is frightening how quick the gangs wreck a place and move on. This looks like it is spreading to other cities - could be a very long night. Alot of sporting fixtures will be cancelled I'd say - and the same plebs will be complaining that there's no MOTD to watch at the weekend:rolleyes:
