How many social network sites do you use?

Just curious on this one as so many people here on AH seem to think it's cool (not saying that it is cool either) to notbe signed up to a social network site.

Personally, I don't see the benefit in not using them. Now I'm not a Facebook freak who updates my status every minute of every day or uploads a ton of photos of me standing in a mirror looking ugly. Facebook to me is quite handy because I've a head like a sieve and forget birthdays so it gently reminds me. Also, am not one for a diary and Facebook tells me when I've something coming up and lastly, it's a handy place to store photos.

Twitter is another one I use but that was set up for work purposes only. I've 2 tweets in 8 months but read other peoples posts on a daily basis. Short informative messages. If they ever extend the character limit I'll stop reading.

Would love to hear peoples opinions on why they don't use social networking sites.

Only if you've been matched and therefore use the site as a social tool.

    So no. No it doesn't.

Just facebook. Handy for sharing photo's with people at home. Fb chat is handy on the phone too.

Signed up to twitter but never use it.

I read the odd bit on twitter but I don't actually use any ''social networking'' sites myself.

Just facebook, but I still have my bebo account open for the nostalgia, it's nice to look back sometimes and see what an idiot I was when I was in my teens.

I hate people using Facebook as if it was Twitter.

NO, I don't care if you just had a shit the size of an Ewok, fuckoff.

Twitter is probably the most useful out of the lot.
Facebook for catching up with old school pals etc

Started on MYSpace, then everyone stopped using that and started using Beb so I moved to that, then the same thing happened with Facebook.

I use facebook regularly, mostly to see what people are up to. Use Twitter, but mostly just read what other people post, don't post much either.I use Google Plus a bit but not as much as the other two, even though it's the one I'd prefer to see more people using.

Is Boards a social or antisocial networking site?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,080 ✭✭✭McChubbin

I regularly post on my Facebook page- I find it's the easiest way to stay in touch with my friends who live both on the opposite side of Dublin and the opposite side of the Atlantic.
I have a Twitter account but I don't really use it all that much.
I also used to have a Myspace account back in the day but I had to shut it as this weird guy kept sending me pictures of him in a diaper asking if I could play "Mammy".

There be some very strange people on Myspace so I don't go near it anymore. Also used to be on OKCupid purely for the quizes but I got fed up of being hit on by the fuglies.

Facebook, 'cause it's where everyone's at
Browse twitter, though not a huge amount
    Last.fm, great for music recommendations

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I don't use any. The missus does and my kids do, sometimes they show me stuff on them (facebook mostly) and i'm completely overwhelmed by the banality of the whole thing. People you barely know sharing their every mundane thought and experience as if they were superstars with the world hanging on their every word.
Any time i've ever seen anything on them, all i'm left thinking is what a total waste of time and effort it is to involve yourself in this shíte. I don't want to see photo's of some bloke i worked with for 3 months 10 years agos nights out. Or hear their ramblings abou some pile of crap i care nothing about.
It's fúcking ridiculous. I'd much rather just watch a movie or listen to some music, or better still talk to a real live person who i might actually have some sort of affection for, to pass the time.

None. I did have a Facebook account a few years ago, but I found it really irritating & deleted it.

How did you manage to delete your FB account? I'm trying this for ages but only managed to deactivate so far but can't delete so it's gone forever.

As for myself I'm only using Boards and LinkedIn.

Apart from Boards, which isn't really a networking site - none. I have a twitter account but only use it to log into some other sites. I've never really seen the appeal with Facebook.. my mates are always pestering me to sign up but I can't bring myself to do it. If people want to contact me there's other ways to do it. Also, I hate people.

I'm not entirely sure if it's deleted altogether. I've heard that it can be very difficult to do that.

linkedin - The only one I see a practical use for.

May try google + if it takes off. The idea of being able to put people into groups appeals to me. That's the issue I have with facebook. There is nothing that I want to say to everybody I know and it's hassle to create different privacy settings for different people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,193 ✭✭✭Wompa1

    Twitter and Linkedin for work
    Google+ for work and personal

In the last year or so I've stopped using them for personal stuff really. Using them now for work rep.

Can I ask why you guys don't use any social networking site? I understand if you're of age where none of your friends use them

    Just on this one -

You know you can decide who you want to be friends with on these things? If you don't want to "see photo's of some bloke i worked with for 3 months 10 years agos nights out. Or hear their ramblings abou some pile of crap i care nothing about. " then just delete that person

It's not a big deal if you do or you don't use any social network site, I'm just curious as all I ever hear when asked is "cos they're gay".

One of my reasons for not being on facebook is that I don't believe that your 500 "friends" are all genuine friends. There must be quite a few people who just added you out of nosiness for a good stalk through your photos/see what's going on in your life. They may not be people that you are close enough to, to want them to have all the info. you give to your close friends and though you can control what you say yourself, you can't control what your friends say/where you get tagged. If these happen to be people you have to encounter regularly do you really want to refuse their friend request or defriend them?

I have just over 100 friends on FB but they genuinely are people who I do keep in contact with for work purposes. I source people for events so have to have contact with these guys. The list was about 180 at one point but I sieved through and got rid of people who I don't talk to who only added me cause we went to school together or something equally useless...

Well that does sound better than the picture of it I had in my head. I do think though, that I wouldn't have as strong a reason as you to use it in the first place as it wouldn't be useful for me work-wise. It would be purely as a social tool for me, and I don't feel I need it.

    Boards and Twitter

Maybe Boards should try a 140 character messenger thing.

kinda hard to explain, I'm just quite a private person, there are some things I don't want my family to know which would be hard to avoid if I was on fb, then I don't want college people hassling me about stuff. It's just really quite awkward, it's just easier for me not to get involved with that stuff. Plus there's enough left on the internet for me to perve on

Cheers man, appreciate the response. Was genuinely interested as some people have the same reaction to not using social networking sites as people who don't drink.

"You don't drink?" - "Why, what's wrong with you?"

    Idiots.
