TCDwifi and OSX Lion

    Hi all,

Hope your having a good summer! In the library at the minute, with osx lion waiting to be installed and I was just wondering if I should install it, given that its unsupported by isservices.

I think it would make no difference as I have the mac address registered and I remember in first year managing to get windows 7 working before it was supported by registering the laptop's MAC address and then upgrading.

I'd imagine the same thing would work here but a little guide (or push) would be a help!

    Cheers

You'll be fine if the same machine has already been passed through the NAC, all you'd have to do is manually set up the main network in your wireless config and away you'd go.

That said, I think the ISS clear the system and force re-registering before the start of next term though as I'm only here a year I cant be sure. If you're on campus now I'd suggest stroll down to AP and ask them, though I'm pretty sure there wont be a problem.

    Damn, I just upgraded.

I hope to be a first year here in September. Are they quick to add support for new operating systems??

Relatively speaking, no. But there are fairly trivial ways around it.

They tend to reset them twice a year or so, start of year and around xmas.

    Gets my iPhone every time...

Considering it was the end of last year (2010) before they started supporting win7, I wouldn't hold my breath for support.

Slightly related question, is there a way to have the username and password saved on iOS devices for the tcd proxy authentication in safari?
And some apps won't work on tcdwifi at all, while others (such as youtube) work without any need for authentication.

Is there a workaround for this yet?

Set the proxy type in your device to manual, and enter the username and password in teh settings for TCDwifi

I'm buying (or at least, was set on it until this got me a little nervous) a MacBook Pro next week, ready for the start of college. This is little use to me if I can't access tcdwifi though, as that ISS disclaimer posted above seems to suggest.

Those in the know, would it be possible to get around this, and how difficult would this be? Alternatively, are there any other options? Had saved up and was all let to buy the Mac next week, this would be such an annoying stumbling block!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Suffice to say there are many more OS's on the network than are supported by the ISS.

OT: Buy a decent laptop, spend less and get Win7 which is supported /mac-hate

Look up MAC spoofing. Alternatively, run the system authentication using a Linux USB stick.

Heh, was kinda expecting some sort of anti-Mac comment. I'm dead set on the Mac though, for whatever reasons. Wouldn't want to derail thread this into a Mac vs Laptop with Windows debate.

I had imagined there would be plenty of OS's on the network that shouldn't necessarily be there.

Just had a look at MAC spoofing. Is it easy to do? Not sure what you mean by running the authentication on a Linux USB, either.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge, I'm sure this smacks of 'tech noob overpays for Mac laptop that he can't get proper use from', but I'd appreciate any help!

The way network access works in TCD is that you have to run an OS/Anti-Vir validation test when you connect it up the first time. Your wireless card has a MAC address, a specific identity tied to its hardware. You can boot some accepted version of Linux from a USB key, pass the network test to validate your MAC address, then log-in to the wifi with Lion just fine.

I see (sort of!), thanks! Any links to how I'd go about doing this? Honestly, I'd consider myself relatively computer literate, but wouldn't know where to begin to try doing this.

Nailer wants to buy a macbook pro, and it's wireless card isn't supported by Linux yet as far as I can tell. So validating on the NAC in that way I don't think would work. Would it be possible to just boot windows inside a virtual machine on the mac, and validate it that way?

Just get any Laptop with a supported OS on it, spoof the MAC address to the MAC address of the MacBook Pro, and then the MacBook will be able to

To spoof a MAC address on Windows, you change the value of the MAC address via the Advanced tab of the wireless card's properties window (you get there via Device Manager). There's not always the option to change it, and it doesn't work on some cards, however.

On Linux you can do it by bringing down the device with ifconfig and starting it again with a new MAC address. Can't remember the exact commands now. Again, it doesn't work for all cards/drivers.

This sounds workable. So it'd just be a case of finding out my Mac's MAC address, finding someone willing to let me use their laptop, changing their MAC address to mine, validating, and then changing the MAC address on their laptop back to normal?

    Thanks for the help!

I have Lion up and running on the TCDconnect network now and having no problems with it tbh. I did have the MAC registered first with Snow leopard installed so I don't think it will work if you have Lion and try to register first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

You may be able to dupe the OS version checker by changing your value in

    /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

This should be easy enough to do on my lappy. It'll be graaaaaaand.

that doesnt work for the majority of apps. mail, youtube and the app store work. but others like jelly sms or Facebook etc.. don't. and safari still prompts for a username and password. ugh damn TCDwifi.

That's not my fault that they're not configured to use the system proxy settings though is it?
Safari doesn't if you have the right settings. I'll verify them next time I'm in college and post them up here,

I would advise not to buy a Macbook Pro, bad value for money and Glare displays!

Go sit in the orts arts block during freshers week for an hour or so, and just look around you... There's more apple than coffee

Also, they're not that bad value for money.
Find me another laptop with an i7, 8GB of DDR3 ram, 1680x1050 display, 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, guts of 8 hours battery life with wifi and bluetooth turned on with a multitouch trackpad, Hi-res webcam, and LED screen.

Well there are quite a lot of laptops with more performance actually, but crappy battery life. That is the strong point about the Macbook Pro, that it has good performance and still very good battery life. But it also has some weak points. All Macbook Pros now have a Glare display, which is crap if you use it outside or in very well lit places. Other than that I would only consider the price to be a weakness. For anyone who doesn't mind mirror displays the Macbook Pro probably actually is a good option. By the way, why only a 7200RPM hard drive? Isn't these days an SSD a way faster option? I mean for the high price of a Macbook Pro I would expect an SSD.

But, a MBP is just as expensive as a thinkpad workstation... and I was only listing my specs. A glare display? as in the Glass front that means my screen stays clean? It's amazing, and is perfectly adequate in sunlight or a well lit room (I have a lamp pointing straight at mine right now)

    EDIT:
    Check the RRP here
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?action=init&current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=F2A3EC7C45634AE8AB0F26CCAC867854

Macs are professional laptops. The entry level ones are junk, but the high end ones are **** fast, reliable, well built, and not that much more expensive than the other machines of the same grade.

I wasn't saying it was your fault, but I was already aware of being able to enter system proxy settings. I was hoping there was a way to force 3rd party apps to use the system proxy and authentication.

    proxyA/B/C.tcd.ie
    Port 8080
Those are the settings im using, verified yesterday.

    Yup. Works like a charm.
Only thing is you need to set the mac address if the network card of the virtual machine to be the same as that of the MacBook.

A glare display is a display that acts as a mirror. In normal lighting conditions you won't notice but in the sunlight you do. (Even if the screen is turned on) This can be very annoying. Just turn off your Macbook Pro and look into the screen, what do you see? Yourself?:D

But, I guess your right, overall the Macbook Pro is probably a good deal, so enjoy your purchase!:)

Your new Macbook won't come with Lion installed I wouldn't think. I got mine when Snow Leopard was recently released, and it came with Leopard installed and a CD for me to install Snow Leopard if I wanted.

For what it's worth, I brought my MacBook into one of the IS Services Network Connect clinics today, and they got it connected for me no problem. Literally took them about 5 minutes and it's up and running perfectly.

Thanks for all the help/suggestions, regardless. Appreciated. :)

Yes, Lion is working perfectly now for 95% of students, though there have been a few anomalies. If you have issues come to AAP or go online and book in for a clinic and we'll help sort you out.
