Water gets stagnant esp during summer when its not cycled as much. Icky yucky bacteria can take life in there and smell it up and potentially add to the OP's problem.

Yes and could give you legionaries disease if you swallowed it..

I see. Might put a splash in next time im filling it up.

I actually took my washer bottle off a few months ago and washed it out with bleach. It stopped working and this was down to the pump being blocked with crud and what not.

They work like power washers now, thought my windscreen was going to come it first time i tried them out after putting it back together!

Holts/Simoniz have a product called Mixra which I find great at removing the grime and scum off the windscreen. It's easy to use too, all you have to do is spray it on the screen and turn on the wipers. (Works best when the screen is already wet)

    This is the stuff...

I got a can of it in Dunnes this evening for around €6 and tried it straight away in the car park. It did look like I was trying to vandalize my car with shaving foam at the time but it did seem to work straight away because the scum (just like the OP's, very dangerous when driving by night) was gone so I used it again on the rear windscreen and it was perfect also. I will keep it in the car for use when needed now.
..On the subject of windscreen washers, I always use the Halfords concentrated screenwash. At about 6 euros for a gallon it's not bad value and over the last couple of hard winters it's the only additive I tried that didn't freeze up on me. I work nights and I was often very grateful to Halfords for getting me home. Not so much of a problem in cars I know, but the washer hose in my truck runs up inside the front grille and freezes easily.

Is that the blue stuff? I found the same to be the case last year also. The washers didnt freeze up at all when I had 100% of that in there.

Sorry for digging up an older thread but that Simoniz Mixra worked so well for me, I had to make sure I passed on the info :o.

Yeah I had the blue stuff also. Great stuff. Never froze. The label said it was good down to -20 so that should cover it all-right (most of the time!)

Suggestions on how to clean my windscreen are required.

To sum it up there is a scum on the outside of my windscreen which makes it very hard to see out of in rainy conditions when the wipers are on. In fact I'd describe it as dangerous if I'm driving in the dark.
I've tried a number of things to try and clean it over the past few months but none have been successful. It's probably new wiper time also but I want to give the screen a good scrub first before fitting them.

I reckon I need some strong chemicals to shift the grime. Can anyone suggest a very good cleaner?

Make a paste from toothpaste & alcohol Gin, Vodka..any spirit) Then, with an old toothbrush, work the mixture onto every square millimetre of the windscreen. Let it dry overnight, & rinse off with soap & water. Do not forget to clean the wiper blade edges with alcohol. This works everytime !! Any excess alcohol must be saved up & added 1 capful to the washer bottle, so you have a permanent clean widnsreen.
