Tottenham in flames as protesters riot

A bus, a shop and two patrol cars have been set on fire in Tottenham. An estimated crowd of around 300 have gathered and there have been reports of looting and shop windows being smashed. Earlier in the day members of a community where a young man was shot dead by police had took to the streets to demand "justice". The 29-year-old, named locally as father-of-four Mark Duggan, died at the scene in Tottenham, north London, on Thursday.

About 120 people marched from the local Broadwater Farm area to Tottenham Police Station, forcing officers to close the High Road and put traffic diversions in place. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Missiles were thrown at them. One was set alight and one was pushed into the middle of the High Road." Officers were being dispatched to disperse the crowd, he said.

He could not confirm that those responsible for the trouble were connected to the protest. A family friend of Mr Duggan, who gave her name only as Nikki, 53, said the man's friends and relatives had organised the protest because "something has to be done" and the marchers wanted "justice for the family." Some of those involved lay in the road to make their point, she said.

"They're making their presence known because people are not happy," she added. "This guy was not violent. Yes, he was involved in things but he was not an aggressive person. He had never hurt anyone." Mr Duggan had been travelling in a minicab on Thursday and was gunned down after an apparent exchange of fire. A police officer's radio was found to have a bullet lodged in it afterwards, suggesting they may have narrowly escaped being struck.

Officers had been attempting to carry out an arrest under the Trident operational command unit, which deals with gun crime in the black community, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). An IPCC spokesman said that at around 6.15pm on Thursday, officers from Trident, accompanied by officers from the Specialist Firearms Command (CO19), stopped a minicab to carry out an arrest. "Shots were fired and a 29-year-old man, who was a passenger in the cab, died at the scene," he said.

It is believed that two shots were fired by a firearms officer, equipped with a Heckler & Koch MP5 carbine. A non-police issue handgun was recovered at the scene as well as the police radio. "Both the radio and the handgun are being sent for expedited forensic tests," the spokesman said.

"The exact sequence of events is subject to the IPCC investigation. A CO19 officer was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but has since been discharged." Local MP David Lammy has called for calm, saying the community was anxious over what had happened. A police officer, PC Keith Blakelock, was hacked to death in 1985 following a riot in Broadwater Farm from where the marchers set off this afternoon.

Hopefully this fiasco will be quelled soon. I am all for protesting, but if shops are being burned and places are being looted, it is not good for the local community or local business the next day.

Given the Met's past history of shooting people who were originally claimed to be a menace, I'm going to withhold judgement on this one until there is more information.

That said, no matter what actually happened, burning down your own neighborhood is stupid.

A pretty horrible area of London, well advised to steer clear apart from match days.

Haaaaaaaaaa true. I was actually born and raised in Tottenham moved away good few years ago but there is a fair bit of interracial 'awkwardness' if that makes sense.

Basically black people feel victimised for years by police and that they're out to get them.

They actually beheaded a policeman there yonks ago in
    my young days...

Basically like NWA's "F**k tha Police", that kinda craic.

Sure none more famous then Alan Sugar

Clapton is full of them, guessing maybe two or three miles away. The ones that dress in suits, go around in swarms and never cut their hair.

There's prob a few jews around alright but the area has gone to the dogs in recent years so they may have moved on a bit.

The London coppers? What about the Birmingham and Guildford ones? Anyone who believes anything coming from the cops in situations like this goes down a lot in my estimation.

A lot of yoof involved in postcode based nonsense goes on thereabouts -15 year olds carrying blades who just don't give a sh1t and fear no one. Very often no father figures on the scene.

There are nice spots up around Alexandra Palace and Muswell Hill.

Yeah he said people were pushing him as well. Wouldn't like to be in the midst of it myself tbh, mob mentality seems to have taken over.

You would think these people would be thanking the police for killing a man who carried a gun around in their community. Well, you would if you didn't know what some areas of London are like.

A ****ed up bunch of people with a ****ed up set of morals. We really are seeing the dregs of humanity on our tv screens tonight. An embarrassment to Britain.

There are nice spots up around Alexandra Palace and Muswell Hill.

Most of Tottenham is actually lovely, the houses are lovely big red-brick victorians, the parks are fantastic and very well maintained, it's on the Lea Valley which is gorgeous. The council is Haringey which is just about the best council in London so the facilities, gyms, libraries, etc, are top-notch for a low council tax. Only 15 minutes from Oxford Circus by the fastest tube line. But christ do so many of the people there make it a horrible hole of place.

I lived there from '05-'08 and found it such a weird place. It should be fantastic but it's a complete nightmare. I lived about a 90 second walk from where the footage of the riots is and I really wouldn't be surprised if about half of my old neighbours are involved. I really feel for some of my other (nice) neighbours if they still live there.

Riot in Tottenham... oh, it'll be all excitement & promise at the start... but inevitably peter out with nothing to show for all the hubbub.

I'd actually had Fulham down for a riot & Tottenham for a four all brawl...

Following a reporter on twitter who is at the scene. He's saying tv crews have been beaten and mugged! Wonder if that's why sky and bbc aren't live right now?
