    Hi lads and ladies,

After sky announcing the SKY/ESPN Sports deal I will hopefully be subscribing at the weekend, I was just wondering to complete the line-up and include Setanta Ireland only in the package, what kind of money are we talking about monthly for it?

Also in the past i heard it can be very messy to un-subscribe from Setanta has anyone any thoughts or tips for me?

    thanks in advance

    Patrick

It is €16 per month IIRC

Not a hope that channel is worth €16 a month.

    Shocking price.

Be warned that apparently Sentanta does not broadcast on the same satellite as Sky, and the dish may have to be moved, I only found this out after getting it in and seeing a blocky picture. As my dish always has a perfect reception I decided not to get it realigned and canceled the DD. Got about 20 letters and 50 phone calls and then they gave up.

Im sure there is a mega thread confirming this somewhere.

Where exactly did you hear this man, all I know is when a program is broadcast freeview on Setanta i can view it without any picture problem.

Does anyone know the story with cancelling, is it as easy as with sky sports?

Cancelling is a right pain as you have to call Setanta direct and as already stated the price is a joke. The different satellite thing might actually have a bit of truth to it as ours used to be awful at times.

The fact that eircom customers get it free online makes it pointless for myself.

    Rang Sky today, SkySports/ESPN for €16 a month for 3 months....sweet job :D

Can anyone explain the situation with Setanta and moving the dish for definite?

Moving the dish, only if alignment is slightly off to begin with.

Check Setanta when they have a Freeview. You will know then if your dish needs to be realigned.

They have a freeview almost every evening around 7pm. Golf Central is broadcast fta so use that to check your signal and picture quality on it.

If your dish is aligned properly then you have no worries plus chance your arm when phoning them to subscribe, you might get it at a reduced rate for a few months if you complain that it's a bit too expensive;)

They're desperate for customers though - you can probably get a deal.

Recently cancelled subscription without any problem however received several follow up phone calls trying to make me change my mind. Was only paying €5 a month for most of the last year. Same dish as for sky used and only issue was in very heavy rain the picture may freeze.

And is it Sky customer service or Setanta themselves that you ring to subscribe/un-subscribe ?

Setanta handle it all. It is completely separate to the Sky bill

I don't understand why they don't just introduce a lower more attractive price instead of trying to get people to pay crazy money and then haggle a lower price when they cancel.

They might have more subscribers if they did that and stopped arseing about

    Seen this on their Facebook

I rang Saturday, no budge from €16.99 and the €14 connection cost, saw this and rang, €25 for 3 months with the option to cancel after not bad at all, well done Setanta, cant see why they don't lower the price to this they would surely treble their custom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,547 ✭✭✭✭muffler

Im paying them €5 a month which I suppose is acceptable.

Same here, only paying €5 a month and have been since the collapse of Setanta in the UK.

they probably have a lot of longer term subscribers still paying the €16.99

they would need to get 3 new customers for every existing customer to make up a reduction to 5.99 for everyone

For the last 8 or 9 months I was paying €7.50/month and the trick is to ring in every 3 months and say you want to cancel. My own fault that I forgot to ring in July and having checked the cc details I seen they deducted the full €16.99 for August.

So I rang them and told them what I thought and to cancel the whole shebang and your man says he will give it to me for €7.50 again. I declined that offer as I was a tad annoyed that they couldn't have taken the time or bother to send a text or an email to advise of the increased rate so he then reduced it to €5/month for the next 3 months.

    Im happy enough with that.

You would still think that they would easily get that and if they started finally charging UPC customers as well that would easily account for an increase in revenue?

I bet UPC customers are pretty fed up today, they crow about getting Setanta Ireland for free but the live Premier League games seem to be getting moved a lot to Setanta 1 which they have to pay €15 a month for.
I think my reduced payment for Setanta is up next week, must give them a ring and wrangle another deal out of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,818 ✭✭✭Minstrel27

They only seem to put Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United onto Sports 1 though.

Hmm,only 3 of the most popular teams in Ireland, may as well include Arsenal games in that list.
The free Setanta Ireland doesn't seem so appealing after all, they had a repeat of Top Gear on it today.

Dave makes a living out of repeats of Top Gear...

Allegedly part of the deal between Setanta and UPC is that a certain number of Setanta's Premier League games will be aired on Setanta Ireland. When you consider that in every weekend Setanta has last choice of TV game and up to five games of the week's ten games (which are likely to involve Top Four teams) will already have been chosen by Sky and ESPN, the amount of games on Setanta Ireland isn't as low as people think it is. For example, next Saturday's game is Everton v Queen's Park Rangers and it is on Setanta Ireland.

Agreed that the rule seems to be that if Manchester United, Liverpool, or Chelsea are playing, the game will be on Setanta Sports 1. There were a fair amount of Arsenal and Spurs games on Setanta Ireland last season. Also Setanta doesn't seem to have to abide by the restrictions on Sky and ESPN regarding each teams share of coverage, so they can show Manchester United pretty much any week Sky or ESPN haven't already go them.

Also remember what else Setanta has:

Every game in the Rugby World Cup.
Second and third choice Champions League and Europa League games.
Live coverage of the Top 14 Rugby.
    Formula One
    MotoGP
    NRL
    League of Ireland
    Blue Square Premier.

I'm a new sky customer and rang setanta yesterday and they are looking for 16.99 a month which is to expensive if you ask me. I would still like to get it though for their matches.

anyone know of any offers or ways of getting it cheaper than 17 a month? cheers

i was in the exactly same position last week, seems like they wont budge on the 16.99 when first subscribing, thank Christ i didn't subscribe at the time, seen the 3 month half price without activation fee offer the next day on their Facebook page, make sure to befriend them and wait for another offer, i think that's your best hope.

Anyone know whats the story with Setanta HD on sky?

First time subscribers will be hit with the full whack unless you see an offer, take the 3 month half price and then bargain with them.

Was watching the Liverpool game Saturday and the picture quality has improved, still no news on HD though.

Seems like the offer is gone alright, you will have to keep an eye out for the next offer, €17 too much for what you get especially without HD

Can someone please confirm the situation re Setanta & cost. I'm interested in the Prem games they broadcast.

It comes free as part of the basic package with UPC. Right?

And it's an extra you must pay for with Sky. Right?

Finally, what's this I hear about Setanta & ESPN merging? Any truth in it?

    Thanks.
