    Hey all,

Just wondering what you all think or if anyone can shed some light on a rumour I heard that a Guinness the evening of trainging days is good for you as it supposedly has something to do with helping the new blood circulate and reduces lactose and prevents DOM,S?

just curious.. dont even drink it but sure any excuse :D

Only benefit I can see is loads of carbs, maybe aiding recovery a bit. Once a week I usually have a few (too many), after doing heavy squats earlier in the day. Doesn't help with DOMS, at all.

once on my birthday, myself and L went into the bar next door to the gym after a session. had two pints of guinness and two double vodka/red bulls each. later that night he tried to rape the bird i was with at the time.

in conclusion, don't go drinking with him.

IMO there's no need to try to justify having guiness after training, just have one, or several. Have some food, preferably protein between training and drinking though, or something like ^^^^^ might happen:D

I'm pretty sure that if you had enough pints of Guinness, you'd wouldn't feel DOMS at all.......

They say you need to shock the system from time to time to help promote growth and what not.

Once when the gym in UCD was closed which we discovered only after getting there we decided to shock the system and go the sports bar instead - suffice to say our systems were shocked!:D

In the 1940's they said Guiness is good for you - something to do with the iron. Personally I'd skip the Guiness and use the cals on extra food!

    I have a definitive answer!!

I went for a pint of Beamish (like guinness but better) yesterday after my training session, and was only gorgeous. On my way to the toilets I noticed an old framed ad for Beamish from the 50s. It said "Today's Beamish is Tomorrow's Energy".

So to answer your question, no, not guinness after training. Beamish after training, yes.

Guinness is a beer! beer is a umbrella term, stouts & ales are just more specific types of beers. I take it you mean lager, and interestingly some were saying a pint of lager gives more hydration than a pint of water (I expect stout would be the same, guinness has less carbs than most lagers though). I think I read they were handing out pints after some german marathon, I think nonalcoholic too, or perhaps only nonalcoholic.

Professor Manuel Garzon, of Granada's medical faculty, made his discovery after tests on 25 students over several months.

They were asked to run on a treadmill under stifling temperatures of 40C (104F) until they were close to exhaustion.

Once they were on the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, concentrationability and motor skills.

Half were then given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, while the rest were given water.

Both groups were then allowed to drink as much water as they wanted.

Professor Garzon said the rehydration effect in the students who were given beer was "slightly better" than among those given only water.

He believes the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench the thirst more quickly, while beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

Based on the studies, the researchers have recommended moderate consumption of beer - 500ml a day for men or 250ml for women - as part of an athlete's diet.

A typical person loses around a litre of water for every hour of exercise in sweat.

People who fail to rehydrate after exercise are more likely to feel tired, fuzzyheaded and suffer headaches.

A spokesman for the Campaign for Real Ale said "moderate levels" of beer had beneficial health effects.

Past studies have shown that sensible drinking of one or two units a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, dementia, diabetes and Parkinson's disease, he said.

The ingredients of beer - which include malted barley, hops and yeast - are rich sources of vitamins and minerals.

Dr James Betts, an expert in post-exercise rehydration at Bath University, said: "People think of alcohol as being a diuretic, but if you are already hydrated, a small amount of beer could be a way of getting the fluid in."

The best way of rehydrating after exercise was with a sports drink containing sugars, water and salt, he added.
