Who is going to win the Premiership?

So I think we've waited long enough, the transfer dealings of most of the top clubs have been done, barring one or two outstanding transfers which may or may not happen.

So who do we think is going to win the premiership?

For me, United are favorites (unsurprisingly). United have gotten stronger since last season. While I think the position of central midfield is weak, I think Carrick/Anderson/Fletcher/Giggs/Cleverely is enough to hold the fort, while the best set of wingers and strikers in the league, combined with the best defence, should do enough to see it through.

Rivals? Chelsea are in transition for me. New manager in. New style of play. Aging players who will need to adjust or be replaced. Still lacking a natural balance in their team, and still haven't replaced Carvalho.

Arsenal are always a threat, I don't care what anyone says. For me, they are the 3rd most likely to win the league, even if Fabregas leaves. They have a potential to build momentum in the same way United and Chelsea can. No other teams have shown that yet. I know they always crumble in March, but they are a year older and more experienced again. I think they have a good shot.

City for me have an average defence, which is going to hold them back. Last year, Mancini had to play 3 defensively minded midfielders in order to cover for them, giving an impression of a defence better than it is. The only really top class defender in there is Kompany. Everyone else is just that level below. IMO, if he tries to play 3 DMs, they won't have enough going forward to pick up enough points. If he tries to open up the game and have some real creativity in there, they'll get exposed at the back. Still another few signings away.

Liverpool are still further down the list for me. While I think Daglish has done well in the transfer market, the squad is still unbalanced for me. It's also weak in defence, possibly the weakest of the five teams. Can see them making a run for 4th though.

Did you put Liverpool in there in case anyone called you a troll?

you should have made it a public poll so we can see the deluded souls who think Liverpool will win the league tbh.

    Liverpool
Man City for me. Aguero is going to be huge this season, I think he can potentially exceed the achievements of Tevez. Silva and Johnson should be even better this season, now that they've settled and found their feet.

Liverpool are going to surprise a lot of people this season.

Carroll and Suarez will form the best striker partnership in the league.

We will sign Jose Enrique and one of Scott Dann and Gary Cahill so our defense will improve.

We finally have depth, and a far better midfield than Manchester United and Chelsea at this moment in time.

We don't have the distraction of European Football.

I think this is our year.

I did not vote, will not be able to make up my mind till after the transfer window closes.

But as it stands I think its between city and utd.

If chelsea can get modric then it changes things and I would fancy them.

    2. City (+3 points)
    3. Liverpool (+5 points)
    4. Arsenal (+3 points)
    5. Chelsea (+2 points)

Based on none of the teams adding further to their squads. Imo Chelsea's is the weakest out of the 5 teams above. Far too small to cope with some injuries, Torres out of form and Essien a far bigger loss than most acknowledge.

I suspect reverse psychology at play here. Or walking out of the room to make sure your team score the winning goal.

Arsenal shall do what they always do. Flatter to deceive. Hard to see Chelsea in the shake up unless they invest in some fresh defenders while hoping Torres finds his old self. Utd haven't added that much for 50+ million quid. A newbie keeper, with Ferdinand not the force of old Jones could be asked to do rather more than he is able for in his debut season. Young is good for the money. The middle remains open to query and is Berbs staying?

City at least have all the ammo they could ever need (except maybe a CB) their success or failure will be entirely down to Mancini

Utd are probably going to win it, I really hope someone else does though, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure it won't be Liverpool. Take it a game at a time though I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 540 ✭✭✭Equium

Er, why have everyone's predictions so far placed Liverpool ahead of Spurs? Kenny's signings so far wouldn't fill me with confidence if I was a 'Pool fan. Spurs did away with them pretty easily on both occasions last season, and if they can bring in a striker with any sort of ability/intelligence/consistency then I can see the gap widening.

As for the title: United or Chelsea again. Yawn...

    Chelsea
I think United will win it and quite comfortably. Hope I'm wrong :o

Chelsea are an aging team and are perhaps banking on Torres hitting form. If he does they could be up there, big If though. I'd be shocked if he didn't pick up at least one injury at some stage. They should still finish second but their squad just isn't as strong as Uniteds.

City won't win it with Mancini in charge imo unless they change their style away from home in certain games. The potential loss of Tevez could really hurt them too. Aguero is class but it might take him a while to settle. If they are not close to the top around Christmas I can see Mancini being shown the door.

Arsenal are going the other direction and they will might have a battle for fourth especially if they lose Fabregas and Nasri.

Liverpool - no chance of the league unfortunately but should be far more dangerous than last year. A top 4 finish will be the target for Liverpool this season, and if that's achieved it will be a successful one.

But in terms of strikers they have far too much ammo, and they badly need rid of a couple of them (Santa Cruz, Adebayor) though I think they should keep Bellamy, he's been harshly treated by Mancini. RM will struggle to figure out what his best 11 is.

To be fair they're entitled to approach this season with a bit more optimism than in previous years. Dalgleish has steadied the ship, made some decent if unspectacular signings, and they've a bit more strength in depth to the squad now. In Charlie Adam they've a better central midfielder than anything at Old Trafford. They almost certainly won't win the league but they have enough about them now to be back pushing for a top 3 or 4 finish.

I doubt any serious Liverpool fan really believes that they will win the league. As I said in my prediction a top 4 finish will be a really good season for Liverpool.

The only time really in the last 20 years when there was a small sense of optomism about a title challenge was a few years ago when they finished runners up to united the previous season

Even then I never met a fan who said "it'll be our year" next year.

I think it's clear who has the delusions here...;)

PS, you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. Serious business.

I don't see how it's such a preposterous statement to make that Liverpool have a better midfield than Chelsea or United at this moment in time.

Lucas, Meiriles, Aquilani, Gerrard, Adam, Henderson

    vs

Ramires, Lampard, Essien (injured for season) and Obi Mikel

    vs

Anderson, Giggs, Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson and Cleverley.

The most satisfying thing as a United fan is how confident pool fans get after a couple of wins . .

TBH if Liverpool are going to be put in this poll, Spurs have a great argument to be deservingly in it! Just because there are more delusional Pool fans, doesnt make the right of the spurs fans to blindly support their team any less important . .
