Got to thinkin about this recently and wonderin was there much reduction in the price of a cup of coffee now that the Tiger has departed.

Went into a coffee shop in malahide recently and requested an Americano - Black Coffee - milk on the side.

It came in a medium sized cup nicely presented an all that ....and the price €2.90.

    Nearly €3 for a cup o coffee !

Is this normal....is this reasonable ......is this a rip off.....why is it so expensive ?

It's a little on the expensive side, but I don't know Malahide very well. I'd say Malahide is a little on the expensive side.

2.50 is expensive for a coffee, but it depends what you're getting. also, if you're thinking it's too expensive, don't shop there. Simple.

why is it so expensive ?

    Because you paid it.

If you were willing to pay €5.90 for it that's what they'd be charging.

Londis on Dame Street is €1 for coffee or tea. €2 for a chicken fillet roll. Amazingly cheap!

It's a rip-off but sometimes it's the kick you need to get you thru the day.

Hopefully in future they'll offer a service to inject the caffiene directly into my eyeballs.

I never pay more than €2 for a coffee.

€2 and every seventh cup free in McDonalds. Decent coffee too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Aishae

I noticed a lot of coffee shops seem to charge less now but there are still plenty of menus I've seen where the price is 3.60 for eg. Crazy. What I always found odd was the price of hot chocolate, it's more than the price of coffee usually.

I've noticed newsagents etc don't try to charge people a fortune anymore. Lots of 1/1.50 deals - in Dublin at least,

I dont mind so much if you get a decent sized cup but those places that charge a fortune for a tiny mug?! He'll no

Cheaper again if you peel the loyalty stickers off the cups that are left behind from customers too lazy to dump them. :p

€2.90 is a tad expensive for a medium Americano (should be max €2).. but just be thankful you didn't go to Costa Coffee - you wouldn't have gotten change for a fiver there! :D

Though to be honest, I'd rather pay €2.50 for a good cup of coffee than €1.50 - €1.80 for the absolute dirt you get in a Centra nowadays. Vile!

OT - bought a lovely cup of coffee last week and it fell out of the cup holder and spilled all over the ground of the passenger seat. Don't know what I was more pissed about - the stink of coffee in the car until I cleaned it yesterday or the fact I lost a damn fine cup of coffee! :(

Nail meets head, people complaining about things being expensive after they have bought them makes no sense, if the OP was willing to pay 2.90 for a cup of coffee then you can bet that many other consumers will also pay this premium.

If you think something is expensive don't buy, if enough people do the same prices will drop....

...why is it so expensive ?

I'll tell ya why.. cause they're robbing bastards!! The maximum value of the different beverages in my opinion are as follows:

    - cup of coffee - €1.50
    - cup of tea - €1.20
    - 500 ml fizzy drink - €1.20
    - 330 ml can fizzy drink - €0.80
    - 330 ml bottle beer in pub- €2
    - pint beer in pub - €3

I pay €1.80 at most service stations , and paid € 1.90 at a hospital restaurant at the weekend .

And not only that , but I also got the milk , sugar and spoon for the all-in price above .

I'm a coffeeholic, 5 cups a day at least, it's a standing joke that I can't pass a petrol station without stopping for a coffee. Mcdonalds have good caffein, Toughers do a fine cup, the Tesco stations are nice too, but as for price, €2 is the max. If it's more than €2, I'd get it the once, but pass on the repeat custom thing. Apart from Mcdonalds, cos I collect the sticker things, and get a lot of free cups, so the price gets lost in a haze of "gotta collect the stickers, mmmmm, heh, mmmmm".

This is not directed at you personally but most people who complain about prices and being stung have been in a situation where the price is crazy.

They make the on the spot decision to make the purchase because they believe the product must be nice due to the fact the price is ott. They buy, they taste and they come to the conclusion it's a rip.
Next step is to vote with your feet and tell everyone in cyberspace about your experience.

Well if you live to the age where you're buying cups of coffee in the city centre and you still haven't realised that price does not necessarily equal quality, then you've lived your life with your eyes closed!

Its on the Northside side of Dublin, so not D4, but yep, a nice area.

I wouldn't say that 2.90 is very expensive for coffee. I've seen much cheaper though (aka. Londis on Grafton Street for €1 is the cheapest I have seen).

I suppose I'm used to paying 3.30 or so in the 'coffee chains' around town though, so I wouldn't even think of 2.90 as expensive. It is actually pretty extortionate though really.

Why??? I make sh1te coffee. ps I work for Mcdonalds and most of the big coffee imporers, so feel like I'm just giving somthing back. If you can't afford €10 a day for coffee and €17 for fags, you can just give up. Edit, my values may well be somwhat warped, I blame the Celtic Tiger, he touched me on my no no place.

Wouldn't have thought paying up to €3 for a coffee is too bad ,if you're sitting down to have it.
As long as people are working and the place is clean ,no harm done.

What I meant was, in comparison to other coffee places, where prices can range from €3.20 -€3.60, €2.90 isn't that expensive.

I said then, that the prices are extortionate, but for what you're getting. €2.90 for coffee is expensive (because its just a cup of coffee!), butin relation to other prices, its cheap-ish.

just so ye know, the price of coffee as a commodity has rocketed due to short supply and big demand, the coffee importers are hurting at the mo. So, whatever the price, if it's rich and hot, with that aroma to die for, and you can't stay awake without it, its all good.

Jaysis I just got some serious deja-vu, that's roughly the price things were when we changed over to the Euro.

Fair play to you for keeping it lit, but I don't think anything has or ever will stay the same price for a decade.

As for a cup of take-away coffee, anything over €2 means I'll reconsider my options in future and anything over €2.50 means I definitely won't be buying it there again.

A sit-in cafe is a different story, and how much I'd pay obviously raises due to the sit-in factor, but anything over €3 is ridiculous and it'd want to be made from those beans that they make cats digest first.
    Coffee is mank.

    No it's not...actually...wait a minute...

Aw no, I know those prices are unrealistic, but they're still the prices I believe those drinks should be, if ya get what I mean? Like I'd be very surprised to see bottles of beer going for 2 quid in any pub/nightclub or cans of coke going for 80 cent... but when you think about it, is a can of coke worth more than 80 cent considering that you can get them for for about 30 or 40 cents when there is a multi-pack offer on. i know people would say "well it sells for more than that, therefore it is worth more" but I'm not convinced!

Getting sick of that boring feckin answer to every thread about prices.

It's the same as saying: it's expensive because you paid for it. And it's true.
This is not directed at you personally but most people who complain about prices and being stung have been in a situation where the price is crazy.

How is telling everyone on cyberspace 'voting with your feet'? The OP didn't even mention the cafe. So we know of a place somewhere in Malahide that's a rip off.

The OP also didn't mention whether the coffee was nice or not. So he's basically questioning why 2.90 is so expensive. So I think the valid answer is: don't pay the price.

(Fixx do really nice coffee, but very very expensive. I'll go there sometimes).

It should be obvious that when your buying a cup of coffee the raw materials(ie coffee cup milk sugar) is only a small element of cost. Production costs will no doubt add up to more and overheads screw the bejasus out of you.

If you want cheap coffee buy a flask in lidl and buy lidl coffee. Bring it with you.

OP, Coffee is a commodity that become very expensive in the last two years for two reasons. Two consecutive coffee harvests in key growing areas like Vietnam and Brazil which were poor.

Secondly, as China and India emulate the West and their (bad!) habits they have pushed up the demand also.

Taking these two factors into account an average coffee shop probably has a lot of overheads. High insurance costs. Light. Power. Rent. Staff. Commercial Rates.

And as another poster has rightly stated, you never said whether it was nice or not. At the end of the day, its about value not price.

I went to dublin zoo the other day, an hour in, needing a lift and seeking coffee I spotted one of their little shops. Expecting to be gouged (captive audience and all, excuse the pun) I was pleasantly surprised that it was only 2 euro for a tea/coffee/latte etc (may have been 2.50 but definitely no more then that).
I think they realised people need cheaper these days, or will do without.
