comparable how? If it's a different processor or something then it could be a bad deal...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Well the tesco one has more RAM & bigger hard drive so it would appear to be a better deal

2.0Ghz in the Tesco, 2.13Ghz in the Amazon. SFA difference.

There are very few differences in the processors

Have a look on ark.intel.com to compare the two, biggest difference I could spot was one has a clock speed of 2GHz and the other is 2.13GHz

So is the Tesco one any good?

The Sainsbury's laptop has a newer generation processor. Also its 209 pounds.

This laptop is a mediocre deal, difficult to find an indepth genuine review, rare model
    http://apcmag.com/notebookhunter/emachines-eme732z-p622g32mnkk.htm

It ranges from 300 to 400 euros across Europe.

If someone in the family wants a laptop that isn't ordered online, then this is okay, however I can't confirm what niggles it has

Remember, anything with a dual core processor, 2+ gigs of ram is generally fine for internet, movies, pics, word, everyday tasks - its the quality of keyboard, trackpad, screen, etc which usually turn out to be most important features

This is attractive because its very simple to return if there are any issues.

As has been said before, the processor is certainly fast enough for most daily tasks apart from playing games. The P6100 is actually based on the Core i3 architecture with some features like virtualization and hyperthreading disabled. So it is about as powerful as a Core2Duo T7800 @ 2.6GHz, which certainly is not a slow processor. The 320GB disk and the 3GB Memory are very good value in this price segment and again will be enough for all but the most demanding uses. So yes, I think for somebody who is looking for a cheap laptop for not much more than the price of a good netbook but many times as powerful this is a good offer, especially for a brick&mortar store. How good this thing is in real terms however depends on the build quality and I can't say anything about that. If it works for say three years then it is good value, if it is crappy and breaks after three weeks than it is obviously not :D

    €20 cheaper in DID
The single core AMD V160 in this is less than half as fast as the P6100, apart from the smaller memory and harddrive. So this is inferior and it would be a lot more expensive than 20€ to upgrade it to the same specs if even possible.

P.S. I fully agree, the sainsbury offer with the i3 is even better value. But sadly this is not available here.

Are eMachines still pieces of sh|te? I used to support eMachines PCs a few years back (when they were still owned by Gateway), and they were sh|te back then. Are they still sh|te?

Not the same laptop at all, the tesco one is far superior. That D.I.D one has an AMD V160 chip which would be extremely slow by modern standards, eben compared to the chip in the tesco one. Whats more the D.I.D one is 2gb/250gb whereas the tesco oneis 3gb/320gb. Also worth pointing out is that that D.I.D one has only a 4 cell battery which is appalling in this day in age. Tesco one is a miles better buy and a pretty good deal ans laptops in bricks and mortar stores go. Get that tesco one running right(Re-install Windows, basically) and its a perfectly adequate laptop for 80% of people. Probably not that stylish but at under 300€ for a proper laptop, you cant really complain. The tesco one also has a 6 cell battery(As i far as i can tell) which is the norm for a entry to mid spec laptop.

As regards of the quality, who know's but i cant imagine it would be much different to recent Acer's, which havent been bad IMHO. Then again, might not be as good. Emachines did have an awful rep a few tears ago, but from this one looks like in a picture, a lot of the parts, notably thr keyboard looks like they were lifted from a Acer 5742

My mother picked one up in New Ross today. Have gone through its first power up / Windows update / Norton Internet Security update (60 days free) and I have to say I'm mighty impressed. Only reservation is about the buttons on the trackpad which feel a wee bit cheap but other than that it looks great. Good spot OP and thanks for the feedback other posters.

BTW the box it actually comes in looks nothing like the one pictured earlier - its a brown, flat type box with a generic picture on the front and a white box end label. So inocuous that I wasn't sure she'd got the right thing till I read the label.

Uninstall this POC asap! You used to need to download the uninstall program from their site (maybe you still do?)... Stick some free AV on it instead - AVG or whatever.

Nope! Have it on 3 machines here and my father has it on his as well. I find it great - the parental controls are especially good when you've kids using it, 'cos you can apply the one set of rules across all the computers they use. There's some performance penalty but I find it very good and have been using it for years.

McAfee is dirt by the way...

And so is Norton:eek:. Download Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft site and you will have all the security you need. The big bonus is that its free:)

    Uggggh, emachines.

You'd be better off spending €100 more and getting something that is far better and likely last twice as long.

Got it on Monday. Have not used it much, as I'm working till late most evenings. Initial opinion is that it is well worth the money. You won't get anything at that price with those specs.Wireless is especially effective. Has Office, but I have problems activating it:( It will not accept the product key i enter. Will get on to Microsoft next week.

I got one the other day, I thought you had to purchase the office so I uninstalled it and loaded on microsoft office home and student 2007 which I had left over from getting for the kids 2 lap tops a few years back.
Bugger have I made a big mistake.

I bought one too, happy with it for what it is, a browsing & document laptop, excellent value, not much else out there to top it.
As for Office, didn't even look at it, why bother, I have office 2007, cant see much difference between any of them, had 2003 before that and it does the same stuff. I presume you have to pay to activate it, So i just loaded 2007 straight on and no problems, didn't even uninstall anything, waste of time really! Until theres a version of office that can type itself, I'll not be buying another Office suite.

    Cheers for that, :o
I am very happy with it, I only use it for browsing and doing documents also. Up to now i had a pc with Windows 2000, so could not upgrade to better internet browser and was awkward when I needed to book flights on some sites as not all of the dialouge boxes would appear etc,
Very happy with Windows 7 and finding out all the new extras I can do.

    You poor thing  !

Windows 7 is great in my opinion. I will be installing my ultimate cd's on the laptop as soon as I get it though with a Linux partition.

I was well impressed that it has wireless N capability! Will do well with the old 100mb :D Also has anyone tried the hdmi out on it?

Lesser processor, lesser operating system and who is the seller and will he be there if you have a problem with it?

My mother is delighted with hers from Tesco. I'm very 50/50 on whether I should get one to replace the 6 year old machine my kids are using - will it last (couple of BSOD's every now and then) or will I end up having to replace it when I can't get as good a bargain?
