Upper body strength training would have carry over to push-ups.
Maybe as you've progressed you are doing full ROM push-ups now, and before you were doing 70-80 Ray Darcy push-ups

use a medicine ball doing the pushups.
great way to increase difficulty (next difficult after Ray D'Arcy pushups)

Do a few (say 3-4) sets of less than 50% of your max, spread out through the day. Add a set each day.
Take 2 days off after 5 days.

Add a rep or two and start at the original number of sets after the 2 days off.
Adjust if it affects your recovery.

Eg: Monday 3x15 (15 in the am, 15 at lunch time, 15 in the evening)
    Tuesday 4x15 spaced out similarly.
    ...
    Friday 7x15

    2nd Monday 3x16
    etc.

Obviously adjust if it affects your barbell work, which I doubt it will.
And don't go checking how your max has progressed every week.

    This was not my idea.
I did use it for a bit and got good results.
