    hey there, i've kinda got a bit of a stomach on me, but quite thin in general,
    im looking to start working on my body to improve it for fitness and to make myself feel a bit better about me.

    i just want to know a couple of things,

    a) i'll be 31 in november, is it too late for me to get nice and toned, like 6pack kind stuff? like am i too old to be able to get my body like that now?

    b) where do i start? i have no muscle really, but i am slim apart from a bit of a beer gut lol i want to improve the size of my shoulders, get some definition on my shoulders, arms, neck and chest/stomach, should i start just doing weights and using protein supplements?

    c) my lower back is really sore, i hurt myself when i was younger, so i have problems with certain exercises, will this prevent me being able to sort my stomach out?

    d) what do i need to do to reducde the beer belly??

    a) Absolutely not. 30's is probably the peak of your strength career.

    b)go to a gym and lift weights. You don't need protein supplements as long as you eat a good clean diet with plenty of meat/fish and protein rich foods.

    c)It has nothing to do with your stomach but be careful, don't hurt yourself. If it really is something you've had for years then you'll probably have to use machines as substitutes for a few exercises (leg press instead of squats) etc.

    d) Lower your bodyfat % and you'll lose the beer belly. abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. You can't spot reduce fat on your body, it comes off from all over.

    Read the stickies in the nutrition section for more info on losing fat and keeping muscle. Lift 3-4 times a week and cut your calories and you'll drop fat.

    thanks so much for the advice, i noticed befor when i was lifting standard dumbells that it was kind of hurting my bones forearms maybe because of the andgle you have to lift the heavier weights at, should i use some kind of supports? or just avoid lifting them altogether? my arms are very skinny

    Free weights are better than machines because they recruit stabiliser muscles. You should just lower the weight and make sure you're doing the exercise properly. Ask a PT or watch some videos on youtube to make sure you have good form. It depends on the kind of pain you're getting. If it's a sharp acute injury type pain then you should leave it, but just regular pain that comes with lifting heavy weights is normal.

    Do you know what the exercise you were doing is called Hotman? If its barbell curls with a straight bar it could hurt up your forearms and around your wrists. Do what Timetoshine said and go on youtube and check your form. If it seems ok its likely your forearms have less strength than your biceps and are feeling it more. Again, its the difference in the pain you're feeling. If your forearms feel tight after, its probably a good thing
