Do you tell other drivers that guards are on the road?

    Hey guys,
Just driving out the road there and got stopped by the guards looking for tax and insurance. After being given the all clear we drove on going over a hill, after the hill the person who was driving the car proceeded to warn fellow drivers coming from the other lane that guards were stopping using his hazards so they would make sure to be within the speed limit etc. (I'm sure you know what I mean). Just wondering do you guys do this or do you believe its wrong?

    Food for thought :)

Are hazards the new thing now?

I thought you flashed the lights

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera

Only when there are no guards around to slow down idiots.

    I wouldn't warn anyone.
If they're doing something wrong (speeding, no tax/ insurance, NCT, etc.) they should get caught.

I give two quick flashes for several Km's.

Yup. And I appreciate it when I am warned. It's nice, one of the rare moments of road user unity :)

It's a good point yes...but take someone who is speeding, and not just a few mph over the limit, I mean really tearing it past. Wouldn't it be better for them to get caught once than be a constant danger on the roads? You know what they say, prevention is better than the cure! ;)

You would probably get done for indecent exposure

That's the whole reason for flashing rather than shouting "There's guards up ahead!"

If you get caught doing it, they can never prove it had anything to do with helping people avoid them.

I do. Guards are handing out fines for people going 2 and 3 km's over the speed limit. It's a money scamming scheme. I'll always warn people unless they are really speeding - boy racers, arseholes in fast sportscars doing 200km down a motorway.. They can feck right off and get caught.

I have flashed lights in the past, someone flashed me the other night and further down the road they were there not that I had anything to worry about

Warning people about speed traps is one thing. Warning them about checkpoints is much more serious. You have no idea what the checkpoint was set up for.

This is a good idea! I totally support you. I normally don't warn other drivers and drive carefuly myself.

Don't do it during your driving test.

No - people flash their lights for any number of reasons these days so by the time I've realised why someone else is flashing their lights at me I've gone past the checkpoint/camera.

Depends on my mood. If someone is driving like a pillock then I wouldn't think twice about not bothering.

well generally the guards are cute enough to set up blocks that flash or no flash, you cant evade the roadblock, but thanks for that anyway :D

Perhaps you aren't the guy they're looking for. Or driving the same type of car.

and as you don't, you don't. I don't fly a plane, but if I did, I would. Fly that is.

Definitely for those speed van scumbags, "The safety vans will be located in areas where accidents have taken place" me hole!, more like "The speed vans will be located in places the Gardai previously identified as easy pickings, e.g. people over the 60km limit when driving away from a town".

    No, I wouldn't.

If you are breaking the law, you deserve to get caught.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭ElishaR86

I would unless the person is driving like an idiot. Also if its a checkpoint you don't always see them coming, so better warn drivers to slow down incase they end up in the back of someone.

They don't tend to pay attention to the tax when they are looking for a particular..

no wonder your films aren't popular anymore. It is your civic duty, as a member of the "i'm not a cnut" club to warn other motorists when the filth are about. Its rule number 2. Rule no 1 is:when stopped at a checkpoint, always try to engage the guard in meaningless chit-chat, the better to distract them from the fact you have no tax, and your nct expired two months ago. I always flash, and I love those who flash me. It's what seperates us from the animals.

    It depends.

If they're using the speed camera (generating revenue) on a safe stretch of road I might.

If they're checking for drunk drivers then no.

    It depends.

yeah but if someone is langers and you start flashing your lights at them they're just going to assume they've made it to another club and be bopping away as they stop at the checkpoint

The only time I flash the lights to oncoming traffic is when there is a danger on the roads.I don't consider the Garda a danger.

Years ago I flashed a car in the distance coming towards me as there were cows on a national road. The oncoming car??? Garda squad car.

If I had been flashing lights as a checkpoint warning, I would have been done...

bit of all three tbh, but thats just how I roll. Theres a reason why they are called "checkpoints" Audrey, and thats because the cops use them to extract cheques from people who get stopped at em. Apart from accountants and people who were dropped as babies, pretty much everyone knows this, and as a result, they flash their fellow man/woman to warn them. I get the impression you are quite straight and law abiding, strict even, and while this does slightly give me the horn, maybe you should lighten up a bit on the whole law and order thing, unless you are a guard, in which case its probably not a good idea.

nothing new there then. I'm fairly handy at the whole "talking nonsense" thing. If you were to assume that i'm just messing*, would it help?

I hang out the window with a megaphone screaming "there's 5-0 up ahead!" or I could just flash the lights, but the megaphone has that ability to warn a vast amount of people at the same time.

I've never heard of that to be honest. Usually you'll get at least 5kph grace, unless things have changed?

I can't usually tell how fast a car approaching the other way is going until they are nearly on me, so I'd rather let someone else judge if they are within a reasonable limit.

Yep......the guards near me piss me off, they'll let you drink drive all you want but they'll set up tax check points outside the school cos all they care about is money ..... oh **** off!
