    Manchester United v Barcelona
    Time: 19:00EDT (00:00 UK)
    Stadium: FedEx Field, Washington
    Live: MUTV(ESPN 2 in USA)

    TEAM NEWS

Man United: Sir Alex has promised he'll give lengthy run-outs to most of his stars ahead of the Community Shield on Sunday week. Javier Hernandez is ruled out after suffering concussion but wouldn't have played in any case. The boss has a tough choice in goal between David De Gea and Anders Lindegaard. Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia remain in Manchester while recovering from a virus and injury, respectively.

Barcelona: Barca's Copa America stars are missing and that includes Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves amongst others as well as new signing Alexis Sanchez. Jonathan Soriano will also out after suffering from a ligament injury during Barcelona's participation in the Audi Cup. Xavi is back in training after an injury lay-off and should be involved.

Pique, Puyo and Maxwell are also injured.

Alves, Messi, Milito, Adriano, Alexis and Mascherano return 8th August.

Hopefully Xavi will make his first appearance of pre-season and Thiago to maintain his good form.

I'd be happier to face Barca without Xavi than Messi. It'll be interesting to see what sort of run out he gets.

Who's having a pop? They've played you twice in Euro cup finals in recent years and dominated you twice.

ManU could be the second best team in the world, but they're still miles from first. Hence "go easy" on you is a reasonable statement.

I agree with your prediction. I'm sure United will be in the final again this year. After all Barca do need to beat someone in it.

    .
    Carrick looking forward
Midfielder believes Barca defeat can drive the club on this season.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is using the disappointment of last season's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona to spur him on in the upcoming campaign.

Carrick started the game at Wembley back in May, when goals from Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa saw Pep Guardiola's men seal a 3-1 win and lift the famous trophy for a third time.

The two sides are set to meet again in a pre-season friendly on Saturday evening in Washington but Carrick insists the players are not seeking revenge and are already over the defeat.

Instead the 30-year-old believes the club can use their disappointment as a positive and aid their quest for more trophies this upcoming season.

"It [the final] is not forgotten. It is something that drives you on," said the former Tottenham and West Ham star.

"Setbacks like that are the things that stick out when you look back.

"The negatives stand out not the positives, and that one is something we are pretty keen to put right."

It will be very embarrassing for United if what is effectively a second string Barca side outplay them.

Be more embarrassing for all the other EPL teams seen as united waltzed to the league last season. While United are playing catch up with Barca, everyone is is squabbling for second place.

I guess it's leagues within leagues at this point. I'd currently rate ManU behind both Real Madrid and Barca but far ahead of everyone in the prem.

    Sho nuff.

I'm happy to go along with that. I'm a La Liga guy.

However, i do think the premier league will be more hotly contested this season.

Not impressed with what Chelsea have done in the off season. Arsenal are Arsenal...

As for City, i think this is the season that we see what Mancini is made of as a manager. As far as i'm concerned the jury is out on him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,068 ✭✭✭Bodhisopha

I should add. United, not overly impressed with their signings this summer but they're winners. So...

The less i am impressed with United squads and the more they defy my expectations the more i realise what a great manager Ferguson is.

Ah Jaysus, that's a bit much. Chelsea have a great squad and bar that catastrophe in the middle of last season they would have been sitting in a much more comfortable position. City have a very strong team this season too and should be in the mix until the final stages.

As for the match tonight, it's a run-around really. The result is of little importance, it's the performances that count.

Yeah, i'd go along with that. Always felt Real of last season would've beaten United of last season.

That Real side/squad is so young also, they will only go from strength to strength.

I'd probably expect over 2.5, hard to call since it's a friendly and plenty of subs may be made!

Came on here for the score, delighted I'll be able to watch it.

Strong Barca team, fancy them to do the usual here over United. Messi not playing but I'd still expect Thiago and Iniesta to dominate possession and create plenty. I really hope Thiago gets a lot more game time season for Barca, from what I've seen so far of him he's been exceptionally good, and from what I've been reading in the superthread he has the potential to be better than Xavi.
