    ...puts things into perspective.

    http://www.globalrichlist.com/

I'm in the top 1%..which is kinda shocking really, as I certainly wouldn't have considered myself 'rich'.

Edit Note: I'm not sure of the accuracy of the site...they do seem to have an agenda.

It pretty funny. Put in how much you earn, then they tell you where you are on the rich list. Oh wait forgot to mention they are asking for donations. Of course they're gonna tell you that you are in the top 1%

The website wants you to give more money overseas basically.

    i'm at 12.8% :( i'm so poor

    donate to me!

Their reason for setting it up is clearly stated on the site -
We are obsessed with wealth. But we gauge how rich we are by looking upwards at those who have more than us. This makes us feel poor.

We wanted to do something which would help people understand, in real terms, where they stand globally. And make us realise that in fact most of us (who are able to view this web page) are in the privileged minority.

We want people to feel rich. And give some of their extra money to a worthwhile charity.

Not the worst agenda in the world, really. It does make you think..

It also tells you how they calculate it. I'd say it's fairly accurate.

The highest on that chart you can be is 107565, no matter how stupidly large the amount you put in. Sux, 0/5.

ha, i'll believe im in the top 3% of the world richest people when all my bills are paid and Im not worried about getting phonecalls from the bank

Sorry, Ive just checked my online banking and **** myself.... Gonna be a lonnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg month

I like feeling smug about my relative wealth but then all the do-gooder stuff below it wrecks my buzz. Could they do a truncated version for selfish cunts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭saa

    14.38%

yep 80 euro a week for college, bills, flat transport... I'm not poor on a global level but in Ireland jaysus all donations welcome :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 874 ✭✭✭cesc77

Not really.Youre implying a perspective which we all have but is individual to our own circumstances.

Many live comfortably in a poorer country in what would be considered a meagre wage over here.

Many live comfortably here without working, who would be considered millionaires compared to those in India and Africa.

    Perspective......

This is a charity guilt inducing initiative, right?

I'm the 51,263,593 richest person in the world...only 51,263,592 more people in the world left to kill to complete my diabolical plan.

    1. Get a job thats pays enough so i can become 51,263,593 richest person in the world
    2. Kill 51,263,592 people
    3. ????
    4. Profit (Technically not profit but relative profit)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,299 ✭✭✭✭later12

    Top 1.65% *apparently*.

I wonder how accurate that link is. No methodology, no attempt to reconcile salary with cost of living, and it encourages us to donate to charity. Hmm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,018 ✭✭✭Mike 1972

Its based solely on income (doesnt even specify whether before or after tax or which taxes should be included) and it doesnt take account of debt or savings.

Is the exchange rate for the Rupee really that bad ?

Well if you're in the top 20 you should be giving something to charity, even your time

Not saying don't some charities do use guilt and its a tactic under much dispute within the charity industry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭whytek

Top 13.84%, which actually took me a moment to get my head around that.

Ah right.. now i get it..

"just slip your hand in your pocket and pull out something special. Something that can help redress the balance - and also make you feel uncommonly good."

A very strange way to say it.

    Money is "something special"?

As for the second part of it, that is complete bull****
Ordinary workers donating salary will redress absolutely nothing, and if it makes you "feel good" then you might want to sit down and have a serious think about your values.

As for calculating how "rich" you are based on your monetary income, it's total nonsense.

One person earns $3 /day but has access to land.
and, those $3 buy them their food and transport needs for the day.

Another earns $500/week but pays $600 in mortgage repayments and has no access to land.

    Who is "richer" ?

I refuse to feel guilty for being at the top of their silly list. It's not like my salary is all mine to spend. They haven't taken into consideration all the direct debits..

    It's 615,000 Rp/year.

Which google says is enough to buy a property in an impoverished township, or maybe a one bedroom apartment in India. So not really anywhere near millionaire territory, apparently.

"You're in the TOP 0.49% richest people in the world!" Fantastic! Now how come I can't afford to buy a house/apartment or a car? Oh silly me they don't factor in "cost of living" which since I happen to be living in one of the worlds most expensive cities leaves me with a lifestyle equivalent to a 19th century peasant.

If you put in £100,00 you are the 6,952,533 richest person in the world.

If you put in £110,000 you are the 107,565 richest person in the world.

In fact, if you put in any figure between £110,00 to £100 million, you are the 107,565 richest person in the world.

Now, either there is only one person in the world earning between £110,00 to £100 million, or something is very wrong with that calculator.

$CAD223189 is where it stops giving a "proper" rank. (Time on my hands!) :pac:

It's an interesting website and a good idea I think. Not to be taken too literally but just to show relative wealth (and to get donations for CARE).

It's not really that good an idea at all.

All charity really does is to extend the shelf life of poverty & make richer people feel better about themselves.

I can't see how this website makes any effort to do anything to the contrary.

I'm no fan of commercial charities, but.. really? You think that's the point of the site.. just because you're not out snorting coke and riding hookers, it means that you are not wealthy? You're a perfect example of what the site is about. Swap your place with anyone living on a thousand euro per year and I'd doubt that stuff would be high on either of your agendas.

You don't need to feel guilty about not, or compelled to donate anything.. but it's a ridiculous situation to be in when that is how people see things.

Bit confused here, you'll have to get paid less to move to 51,263,593 from 51,263,592. Why not just kill 51,263,591? Although really, I think that imprisoning only about the top 20 or so would do the trick. No need for blood.

Oh, we'd have to get rid of that ability to do business from prison too.

What a ridiculous website trying to guilt people into donating by making them believe they are among "the richest in the world".

How the f**k does annual income dictate how rich you are, so if you own 7 houses, 30 cars, have €5 million in the bank but don't actually earn an annual income at this point in time - you are poorer than someone who earns €20k/year ?

Between this and the starving children ads played around dinner time, I don't like the dirty tactics employed by a lot of charities. It actually really really turns me off ever donating to them.

It's refering to income, so its probably pretty accurate. I really think you are over looking the sheer number of people in the world and just how many people are living in dirt cheap countries.

No methodology? Did you even look? There is quite clearly a link to explain how it works, include references to the studies used.
Hmmm. I put in €1 and it says:
you are the richiest in the world

    I see.
No it doesn't, try again, putting in less that $85 or so doesn't register
If you put in £100,00 you are the 6,952,533 richest person in the world.

If you put in £110,000 you are the 107,565 richest person in the world.

    Well done Sherlock.
Too bad you failed to notice that the percentage reads 0.001% for these figures and can't go any lower

Obviously its not a way to see where you fit in terms of wealth and living in the world. Did you actually expect that? And no it doesn't consider the fact that Ireland is expensive and the top 1% could easily struggle to pay bills. Or that 3rd world countries are dirt cheap. It's there to purely to highlight how the vast majority of the world have far less in terms of income. Well done on missing the point.

And yes, they have an agenda. To provide information. It's up to you to do with it as you want. If you can't afford to donate, then don't. I certainly can't.
But when you are complaining about bills, mortage payments, car payments and you massive credit card bill, at least think that it could be a hell of a lot worse.

edit: Also, it's pretty funny, that people are sitting on PCs or iPhones having this discussion on the internet.
